GEORGIA defensive lineman Jason Geathers has declared himself eligibility for the NFL Draft (AJC.com). Geathers was facing the possibility of less playing time next year. The coaches had approached him about taking a redshirt season next year. He is the second Bulldog to leave the program besides Sean Jones. Senior Will Thompson and Quentin Moses will battle for his spot. Bulldog head coach Mark Richt is hoping Michael Grant (6-0, 175), a defensive back from Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson High, can be the first two-way player since Champ Bailey played cornerback and receiver in 1998 according to AJC.com. Grant has already visited Miami and Florida. He is set to visit Tennessee next week and Arkansas Jan. 30. Grant has blazing speed as evidenced by his winning the Class 5A 100 and 200 meters as a junior. The Bulldogs have a verbal commitment from Kelin Johnson (6-1, 185), a defensive back from Daytona Beach Mainland. He was looking at South Florida, Toledo and Southern Miss. Jamar Bryant (6-3, 195), a receiver/defensive back from Richmond County (N. C.) in Rockingham, N. C., is a soft verbal commitment according to UGASports.com. He will visit Tennessee and North Carolina in the next few weeks.
ARKANSAS quarterback Matt Jones has decided to return for his senior season.
MISSISSIPPI STATE received a commitment from Anthony Littlejohn (6-3, 215), a linebacker from Englewood (Fla.) High in Jacksonville. His host on the visit was former Mandarin (Fla.) in Jacksonville David Price (Florida Times-Union). Robert Walker (6-4, 270), a tight end from Southwest Mississippi CC, has verbally committed to the Bulldogs (Clarion Ledger). UConn, Indiana, East Carolina and Alcorn State all offered him. The Bulldogs have commitment No. 11 after Brandon Thorton (5-11, 187) from Homewood (Ala.) chose Mississippi State over UAB (BulldogBlitz.com).
OLE MISS: The Rebel coaches have talked to offensive lineman Tre Stallings (6-4, 317) about moving to the defensive line (Clarion Ledger). Stallings said he would welcome the switch. Dustin Mouzon (6-0, 175), a cornerback from Edgewater High in Orlando, Fla., has committed to Ole Miss., according to RebelGrove.com. He was a Miami Herald Florida 6A all-state first team selection.
AUBURN president William Walker has resigned in the wake of the turmoil he created after he and athletic director David Housel secretly met with Louisville coach Bobby Petrino. The meeting took place while Tommy Tuberville was still the Tiger head coach.
Jerald Watson (5-11, 205), a running back from Central Catholic in Morgan City, La., has verbally committed to the Tigers. He was a previous LSU commitment. The Tigers also had a verbal commitment from Corey Spells (6-0, 186), a cornerback from Mays (Ga.) High. He was looking at Wake Forest, Wisconsin, Mississippi State and Duke.
ALABAMA: An AP story from last week said Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer was a secret witness in the NCAA investigation of Alabama’s football program that was placed on five years probation, banned from postseason play for two years and suffered from a heavy scholarship reduction. Lawyer Tommy Gallion, who is defending former Tide coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams in their $60 million lawsuit, said court documents showed that Fulmer twice gave NCAA investigator Rich Johanningmeier information that he obtained from recruiting analyst Tom Culpepper implicating Alabama. Gallion said in the report that the NCAA ignored violations at Tennessee and granted Fulmer immunity in the case. The documents obtained last Friday came to light in federal court in Memphis, Tenn., where former Alabama booster Logan Young is to be tried on a recruiting scandal for allegedly paying $150,000 to former Alabama defensive lineman Albert Means to come to Alabama. Tide verbal commitment Chris Turner (6-3, 275) was being recruited by Miami, but Turner, a JUCO defensive lineman, said he is a solid Alabama commitment (BOL.com).
TENNESSEE: Ja’Kouri Williams (5-9, 179), a running back from Plaquemine, La., has verbally committed to the Vols. He is being recruited by Michigan, FSU and LSU (Volquest.com). Coach Phil Fulmer is supposed to visit Brent Schaeffer (6-3, 190), a quarterback from Deerfield Beach, Fla., this week (VolQuest.com). Schaeffer (N. C. State, Auburn, Kansas State and South Florida) is the Vols top quarterback target since Louisville Trinity High quarterback Brian Brohm (6-2, 200) committed to Louisville. Fulmer was also scheduled to see Tony Carter (5-8, 165), a defensive back from Mandarin High, this week. Xavier Mitchell (6-4, 245), a defensive end from Long Beach, Miss., has committed to the Vols (Volquest.com). Vol officials are close to finalizing a deal with Cal for a home-and-home series in 2006-07 according to the Tennessean. Cal would replace Boston College, which is opting out of its games the same year because of joining the ACC. Tennessee is scheduled to play UCLA in 2008.
FLORIDA: Defensive lineman Kenny Parker has been granted a sixth year of eligibility. Freshman defensive end Brandon Daniel from Pompano Beach Ely has enrolled in school. Brandon Siler (6-3, 220), a linebacker from Orlando (Fla.) Evans, has verbally committed to Florida (GatorBait.net). He was a MVP in the Cali-Florida high school All-Star game. Tennessee and Maryland are recruiting him, also. Phil Trautwein (6-7, 310), an offensive tackle from Vorhees (N. J.), has committed to the Gators (WagonOnline.com). He chose the Gators over Virginia and Michigan State.
SOUTH CAROLINA: New Gamecock defensive coordinator Rick Minter said he is going to run a 4-3 defense next year. Josh Johnson has left the program. He played in seven games last year and made seven tackles. Kevin Mainord (6-4, 265), a defensive end from Coalmont (Tenn.) Grundy County, verbally committed (GamecockCentral.com) after being sent home from his Alabama visit (Al.com). Geoff Berniard (6-8, 310), an offensive tackle from Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas said FSU is his leader, but USC made up a lot of ground during his visit last week (GameCockCentral.com). Josh Winchell (6-5, 305), an offensive lineman from Southaven, Miss., has committed to USC (GameCockCentral.com). Leon Hart (6-5, 280), a USA Today first-team All-American offensive lineman from Columbia, has decided to visit USC after declining earlier. Hart, who wants to major in electrical engineering, is being recruited by Auburn and Ohio State. Mobile Davidson High twins Jordin and Dusty Lindsey (6-4, 225), who were both finalists for the Alabama 6A Lineman of Year award, verbally committed to USC after being courted by Louisville, Auburn and Mississippi State.
LSU: There is doubt about the status of defensive end Marquise Hill’s eligibility according to TigerBait.com. Hill withdrew his name from the early-entry list of candidates for the 2004 NFL draft. He applied for the draft on Thursday, the day of the deadline, but changed his mind Sunday. The question remains whether or not Hill signed with an agent. Saturday is the celebration of the Tiger’s national championship beginning with a parade and ending with a gathering at Tiger Stadium (TigerBait.com).
KENTUCKY: Kane Hannaford (6-6, 335), an offensive lineman from Palmetto (Fla.), has verbally committed to the Wildcats (KentuckySportsReport). N. C. State and South Florida are recruiting him.
SOUTHERN MISS: Junior quarterback Micky D’Angelo has had to give up football because of numerous concussions. He has had five concussions during his football career. Dustin Almond is the frontrunner to be the starter next fall.
CLEMSON: Philip Merling (6-5, 255), a tight end from Memphis, Tenn., has verbally committed to the Tigers according to TigerIllustrated.com. South Carolina, Arkansas, Kentucky and Memphis are recruiting him.
NORTH CAROLINA received visits last week from three Lake City Columbia players-Rashaun Jones (6-1, 185), Derrick Fulton (5-10, 175) and George Timmons (6-0, 175)-all defensive backs (Florida Times-Union). Timmons will still visit Florida, South Florida, Miami and LSU. Fulton is visiting N. C. State and Clemson. Jones will trip to N. C. State, Miami and Syracuse. Marvin Sanders, the former Nebraska secondary coach, has been hired as a co-defensive coordinator along with John Gutekunst (The State).
FLORIDA STATE: Gary Cismesia, a kicker from, Parrish, Fla., has committed to the Noles. He was a Georgia Tech commitment. Cismesia made five field goals from over 50 yards his junior year. Jacky Claude (6-6, 290), an offensive lineman from Miami Edison, committed last week. Miami, N. C. State, Rutgers and FSU are all recruiting him. He still has some academic work to do. Cornelius Lewis (6-3, 312), an offensive lineman from Raines (Fla.) High in Jacksonville, committed to FSU. He selected FSU over North Carolina. FSU has not signed a player from Raines in 13 years since Derrick Alexander according to the Florida Times Union. Joe Surratt (6-1, 255), a fullback from Pace (Fla.) High, has verbally committed to FSU. Clemson, Auburn and Southern Miss are recruiting him. Trevor Ford (6-2, 190), a safety from Miami Northwestern, committed to FSU. GEORGIA TECH: Left tackle Nat Dorsey decided to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Tech has a verbal commitment from Jon Morrison (6-4, 235), a tight end from Marietta (Ga.) High. He had offers from UT-Martin, UCF and Georgia Southern. Tech also has commitments from Drew Gause (5-9, 200), a running back from Spring (Texas) High and D. J. Jones (6-1, 190), a safety from Camden County (Ga.) High (AJC.com). Coach Chan Gailey has hired Tulane’s Giff Smith and North Alabama’s Brian Jean-Marie (AJC.com). Smith is expected to be the defensive line coach and Jean-Marie could coach linebackers.
VIRGINIA is still in the running for commitments from Dwayne Jarrett (6-5, 205), a receiver from New Brunswick (N. J.), and Olu Hall (6-5, 220), a defensive end from Fairfax, who is rated as the top player in Virginia. Jarrett told WagonOnline.com that he favors Southern California, Virginia and Ohio State. Hall has visits remaining to N. C. State and Virginia. Hall is looking at Purdue, Virginia, Virginia Tech, N. C. State and Ohio State.
MIAMI has hired Tim Walton, the defensive backs coach from LSU, to fill a position on their staff left vacant when Mark Stoops left for Arizona according to the Miami Herald. Dan Werner has been promoted to offensive coordinator. He has coached quarterbacks the past three years for the Canes. The new tight ends coach is Mario Cristobal, who has spent the past three years on the Rutgers staff. He was a former Cane offensive lineman from 1988-1992. The Canes have a verbal commitment from Chris Rutledge (6-6, 282), an offensive lineman from Krop High in Miami, according to CaneSport.com. Florida, Rutgers, Ohio State and Miami are recruiting him.

CORNELIUS INGRAM (6-5, 215), a quarterback from Hawthorne, Fla., is still deciding between Florida and FSU.
KENNY INGRAM (6-6, 200), a safety from Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater, will choose between FSU and Miami. He has some interest in Georgia.
MARCUS WALKER (5-11, 180), a cornerback from Waco, Texas, has verbally committed to Oklahoma over FSU. He also considered LSU and Oklahoma State.
J. R. BRYANT (6-1, 170), a defensive back from Miami Killian, has eliminated Florida after telling Rivals.com that the Gainesville nightspots closed too early and he wanted to stay out all night. He was also ticketed for riding one of the player’s scooters on the sidewalk. He will decide between FSU and Miami.
XAVIER LEE (6-4, 210), a quarterback from Daytona Beach Seabreeze, will announce at the school’s football banquet on Sunday. Texas has now gotten into the picture, but many believe it is an Auburn and FSU battle.
XAVIER CARTER (6-3, 190), a receiver from Palm Bay (Fla.) High, has eliminated FSU and Miami. He is expected to choose between Florida and LSU this weekend.
AARON JONES (6-3, 270), a defensive tackle from Orlando Edgewater, entertained was five FSU coaches Monday. Four Miami coaches visited him a few days ago. He told CaneSport.com that he is favoring Miami.
FRANKLIN OKAM (6-5, 300), a defensive tackle from Richardson (Texas) Lake Highlands, visited Florida last weekend. He is deciding among several schools including Texas, Oklahoma, Stanford, and Oklahoma State.
DARRIUS WALKER (5-11, 197), a running back from Buford, Ga., committed to Notre Dame Thursday. He has visited Ohio State, Stanford, and Alabama. He was scheduled to visit Notre Dame (this weekend) and Arkansas (Jan.30).
KENNY O’NEAL (6-1, 195), a receiver from Oakland (Calif.) Skyline, has eliminated Florida because there are too many receivers on the depth chart. He will decide between FSU and Georgia. He visits FSU Jan. 30.
LAWRENCE TIMMONS (6-3, 225), a linebacker from Wilson High in Florence, S. C., has visited FSU and Florida. He visits Tennessee this weekend.
JOSH JOHNSON (6-0, 225), a linebacker from Stephenson High in Stone Mountain, Ga., visited Florida this past weekend. He is between Miami and UF. Ron Zook told him he could keep his hairstyle and his number (32) if he signs with Florida.
WILLIE WILLIAMS (6-2, 220), linebacker from Miami Carol City, is deciding between Miami, FSU and Auburn.
