LSU: Jordan Reever (6-2, 205), a quarterback from Garland, Texas said he plans on enrolling at LSU after entertaining offers from Syracuse, BYU, Maryland and others. In only 26 career games, Reever was 530 of 865 for 6,622 yards and 70 touchdowns. He will be attending classes in August. (TigerBait.com). Former South Florida running backs coach Leroy Ryals has accepted a job on Nick Saban’s staff as tight ends coach. (TheAdvocate.com). Saban has agreed to a new seven-year contract worth $2.3 million in beginning in 2004 and escalating each year thereafter. (TigerBait.com)
ALABAMA: Adam Thrash (6-5, 215), a quarterback from Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski, has decided to walk-on at Alabama. Thrash’s team won the state title in Class 3A. He had a national record 77 scoring passes in a season in 2001. (BamaOnline.com) This coming Monday, “OUTSIDE THE LINES”, an investigation show on ESPN, will air the conspiracy theory by attorney Tommy Gallion that Tennessee was in agreement with the NCAA in helping put the Tide program on probation. Gallion and Phillip Shanks, another attorney, are both representing Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams, former Alabama coaches, in a lawsuit against the NCAA. (Tennessean.com) Longtime Alabama sports information director Charley Thornton died at age 67 this week. He was best known for being a fixture on legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s Sunday afternoon television show. (Al.com) Mike Shula had his pre-spring press conference Wednesday. Chris James and Eric Johnson are no longer on the team. James set a record last year for the number of blocked kicks in a season. The reason for the early start is to get the required 15 days of practice in before spring break week. Kyle Tatum is moving to right tackle from the defensive line. Other spring experiments are: Evan Mathis from tackle to guard. Taylor Britt from defensive line to offensive line, Cornelius Wortham to middle linebacker. (BamaOnline.com)
SOUTH CAROLINA: Sophomore defensive back Tremaine Tyler has applied for the state’s Pretrial Intervention program following his arrest last month on a marijuana charge. Tyler played in all 12 Gamecock games last year. The PTI program is for first-time, non-violent offenders who are required to undergo counseling, perform community service and submit to mandatory drug testing after an admission of guilt. If he comes back to the team, Tyler is expected to compete for the Gamecocks cornerback position.
USC is staying with its current grass field instead of going to artificial turf. (TheState.com)
OLE MISS: The Rebels have hired former Southern Miss defensive backs coach Jay Hopson, who played for Ole Miss in 1998-91. Hopson will be a defensive assistant and the recruiting coordinator. He replaces Jim Knowles, who took the head-coaching job at Cornell. Hopson coached at Southern Miss for three seasons. In 2002, the Golden Eagles led the nation in fewest passing touchdowns allowed (six) and finished fourth nationally in pass efficiency defense. Hopson was the defensive backs coach at Marshall for five years before coming to Southern Miss. He also worked as a grad assistant under Bobby Pruett when he was at Florida. (RebelGrove.com)
AUBURN: Tommy Tuberville has hired Al Borges, the former offensive coordinator at Indiana, to replace Hugh Nall who was moved back from offensive coordinator to offensive line coach. He spent five years at UCLA as offensive coordinator. Borges wants Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown to be on the field together at least 30-40% of the time compared to 10% last season. Steve Ensminger, the former quarterbacks coach, will coach tight ends. (AuburnSports.com) Brandon Jacobs is mulling over the decision of transferring to another team, probably to a Division I-AA school. Tuberville expects Jacobs to go through spring practice regardless of his decision.
GEORGIA: Sophomore offensive guard Bartley Miller (6-4, 304) had shoulder surgery last week that might cause him to have to redshirt for the 2004 season. Miller started nine games at guard, but did not play afterwards because of shoulder pain. Starting guard Josh Brock had offseason shoulder surgery and will probably miss spring practice. MISSISSIPPI STATE: Coach Sylvester Croom has kicked running back Nick Turner, who led the SEC in all-purpose yardage with 138 per game, off the team for what he called a failure to meet “the expectation level” of the team. Turner was placed on three-years probation Feb. 7 for possession of counterfeit bills. (BulldogBlitz.com)
FLORIDA: Ron Zook has hired Dan Disch, the 16-year head coach of Ed White High in Jacksonville, for the vacant secondary position. Cornerbacks Dee Webb, a sophomore, and incoming freshman Dawayne Grace are from Ed White. Zook also interviewed Oklahoma State cornerback/special teams coach Joe DeForest for the vacant position in the secondary. DeForest is believed to have taken the Denver Broncos special teams coordinator position. Former Gator assistant coach Jim Collins has ended up on the Marshall staff with Bob Pruett, the former Florida defensive coordinator. (Gatorbait.net)
TENNESSEE: Center Chuck Prugh has been granted an extension of his five-year clock after he missed 10 games last year with a life-threatening illness. He spent 22 days in the hospital. He got sick after the Florida win. Quarterback C.J. Leak was granted another season of eligibility, but offensive tackle Sean Young was denied his bid. (VolQuest.com) Vol coaches are excited about JUCO transfer Jesse Mahelona (6-2, 290), who runs a 4.85. He originally committed to Oklahoma, but later enrolled at Tennessee. He bench-pressed 225 pounds a total of 35 times.
N. C. STATE: The Wolfpack starts the season with I-AA Richmond and has a bye week before a home game with Ohio State.
ACC-BIG EAST CHALLENGE (Raleigh News-Observer): Despite the controversy of the Big East teams leaving to go to the ACC, the two conferences have several games against each other. UConn plays Duke (Sept. 11) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 13), Syracuse faces Virginia (Sept. 25) and FSU (Oct. 9) and West Virginia has contests with Maryland (Sept. 18) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 2).
VIRGINIA: Tight ends coach Andy Heck has resigned to take a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cav coach Al Groh has hired Anthony Poindexter as the team’s running back coach and is expected to hire John Garrett as the receivers coach. Mark D’Onofrio has been hired as the Cavalier tight ends and special teams coach. D’Onofrio played football at Penn State as a linebacker. (WagonOnline.com)
NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels play Miami and Virginia Tech in consecutive weeks next season.
FLORIDA STATE: The Noles have withdrawn their scholarship offer to signee Jonathan Warren based on an incident after he and two others were charged with two counts of committing a lewd and lascivious act involving a minor. Rivals.com rated Warren as the No. 26 safety in the nation. He played for Madison County, the runner up in the state 2A championship game. (Warchant.com)
CLEMSON: Tiger quarterback Charlie Whitehurst has been named the recipient of the 2003 Banks McFadden Award, an award given to the top college football player in South Carolina by the Greenville Touchdown Club. The Utah State game has been selected for homecoming. Former defensive coordinator Chris Cosh has accepted the position of linebackers coach at Kansas State. STEVE LOGAN, the former coach at East Carolina, will be the quarterbacks and receivers coach for the Berlin Thunder in NFL Europe. Logan was fired in 2002 after going 69-58 in11 seasons at ECU. (Newsobserver.com)
PENN STATE: Joe Paterno has hired Galen Hall, the former Gator head coach, as the offensive coordinator replacing Fran Ganter, who was named to an administrative post, has been on the staff since 1971. He has been the offensive coordinator for the past 20 years. Hall is a former Penn State quarterback.
NOTRE DAME: Irish alumni numbering more than 400 has signed a letter saying the football program needs to make significant progress or a coaching change is in order. The letter dated Jan. 26 was sent to the board of trustees. A similar letter was sent three years ago when Bob Davie was the coach. Ty Willingham started 8-0 in 2002 in his first season, but the Irish have gone 7-10 since then.
TEXAS TECH: The Red Raiders signed Reedley (Calif.) JUCO quarterback Robert Johnson, who led the school to the national title in 2002. He is a strong-arm passer who can move. He will have a chance to beat out Sonny Cumby, who has four years in the system.
