GEORGIA: Bulldog athletic director Vince Dooley said last week that defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder will get his $165, 000 salary raised and contract extended. VanGorder’s salary is less than Nebraska defensive coordintor Kevin Cosgrove ($200,000), South Carolina defensive coordinator Rick Minter ($170,000) and UCF defensive coordinator Lance Thompson ($190,000). Georgia officials are trying to beef up the schedule by adding a home-and-home series with Oklahoma or Nebraska. (OnlineAthens.com)

ALABAMA: With starting quarterback Brodie Croyle resting his sore shoulder, Marc Guillon and Michal Machen are getting most of the work in spring practice. The defensive backs and linebackers have broken up several passes in drills. Tide coach Mike Shula singled out Tyrone Prothro and Matt Caddell as two of the better receivers so far. After nearly two weeks of spring practice, receivers Tyrone Prothro and Matt Caddell are clearly ahead of the pack. Tim Castille and Nic Luke continue to rotate at tailback and fullback. Linebacker Juwan Garth and cornerback Ramzee Robinson intercepted passes in consecutive Friday and Saturday practices. In Tuesday’s practice, the offense had picked up the pace. Offensive tackle Kyle Tatum, left tackle Chris Capps, free safety Roman Harper and Guillon drew praise from Shula. The Tide scrimmaged Saturday. (Bamaonline.com)

KENTUCKY: The Wildcats will don throwback helmets from the 1950s and jerseys from the 1960s for the Oct. 2 game against Ohio.

FLORIDA: Redshirt freshman Joe Cohen is moving from fullback to defensive end. He was considered one of the state’s best defensive prospects coming out of Melbourne Palm Bay. Cohen is up to 267 pounds. Quarterback Gavin Dickey will remain at quarterback despite rumors that he would move to safety. Senior Travis Harris is moving from defensive end to linebacker, Mo Mitchell is moving back to the offensive line after spending time at defensive tackle. (Gainesville Sun)

LSU: Houston is hoping to play a game against Oklahoma this season, so they are trying to get out of the Sept. 11 game against LSU. Houston must find a suitable replacement before they can get out of the deal or pay the buyout of $175,00. The opener against Oregon State might be picked up by ESPN. (Collegefootballnews.com) Kirk Doll has left his position as assistant head coach to join the Denver Bronco staff. Doll, the LSU linebackers coach, has been with the team since 2002. He becomes the fourth assistant (Lance Thompson to UCF, Tim Walton to Miami and Stan Hixon to the Redskins) to leave the team since the national title game. Amazingly, LSU already has a verbal commitment for 2005 from Clarence Ward (6-1, 180), a safety from LaMarque, Texas. They also received two commitments earlier this week from Darry Beckwith (6-1, 212), a linebacker from Parkview Baptist High and his teammate Lyle Hitt (6-3, 275), a defensive tackle. MISSISSIPPI STATE: Bulldog officials have been told by the NCAA that their new deadline for responding to alleged rules violations is March 31. State received the letter of allegations from the NCAA on Dec. 2. The hearing that was originally scheduled with the NCAA infractions committee has been postponed until at least June. The next opportunity for school officials to meet with the NCAA is June 11-13 in Indianapolis. State has been accused of rules violations that took place between 1998-2002. Some of the new coaching assignments are Woody McCorvey (quarterbacks), Freddie Kitchens (tight ends) and Stan Drayton (running backs). The top two quarterbacks, Kyle York (shoulder surgery) and Aries Nelson (car wreck), could be limited this spring due to injuries.

AUBURN: Reserve quarterback Josh Sullivan has decided to give up football in order to concentrate on baseball. He leads the Tiger baseball team in hitting with a .500 batting average. Sullivan played in four games as a redshirt freshman last fall. Without Sullivan the backup spot is likely between Brandon Cox and Kelcey Luke. Tommy Tuberville would like to name a No. 2 quarterback after the first spring scrimmage on Saturday. (Mobile Register) Sophomore Karibi Dede moved from safety to linebacker and Antarrious Williams moved from linebacker to safety, his original position. Jason Campbell is close to finishing as the school’s all-time leader in passing percentage. He has played 36 games at quarterback. Coach Tommy Tuberville was happy with the first day of pads for the Tigers on Wednesday. During the practice, Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown were involved in more pass patterns. Defensive lineman Stanley McClover, a standout on the scout team last year, has been impressive. (Auburnsports.com)

TENNESSEE: Freshman punter Britton Colquitt has been suspended from the team following his fourth alcohol-related incident in the past six months. He is the younger brother of All-American punter Dustin Colquitt. He originally signed with Tennessee in 2003, but re-signed last month. (Volquest.com)

TROY STATE: The Trojans have hired former Auburn running back James Joseph as its running backs coach replacing Arlington Nunn, who accepted a job with Ole Miss. (Collegefootballnews.com)

CLEMSON: Tiger ticket prices are all $32 each except for the South Carolina game, which is priced at $49 per ticket. Clemson’s total attendance was No. 15 in the nation last year with 532, 551 in attendance. Ticket prices for the road game at Texas A & M Sept. 18 are $60 per ticket. Clemson has consecutive road games at Texas A & M, FSU and Virginia. They have a week off between the FSU and Virginia games. (The State)

FSU: Spring practice began Tuesday. One of the highlights of spring should be the first team linebacking corps with Ernie Sims, A. J. Nicholson and Sam McGrew. Buster Davis backs up McGrew, Marcello Church is behind Sims and juco transfer Barry Wright is battling Nicholson. Ray Piquion is limited due to injury. Right defensive end Eric Moore is the only full-time starter in the front seven, although Nicholson, nose guard Brodrick Bunkley, defensive end Kamerion Wimbley and tackle Travis Johnson have all started at different times. (Warcant.com) Last week, defensive line coach Odell Haggins lost his father and younger brother in a fire at their home in South Carolina. (Tallahassee Democrat)

VIRGINIA: Al Groh has hired grad assistants Joel Makovicka and Chad Wilt. Makovicka, who played at Nebraska, played fullback at Arizona. Wilt, who coached at Central Connecticut State, will coach with the defense. Makovicka will help with the offense. (Wagononline.com)

FAMU: The Rattler schedule could be done in the next few days. In a memo sent to the board of trustees, the MEAC appears to have re-admitted FAMU into the conference. (Tallahassee Democrat)

MIAMI: Defensive coordinator Randy Shannon was being courted by N. C. State about a defensive coaching position, but he has decided to stay. Wolfpack safeties coach Chris Demarest has left for a job at Rutgers. One source told Canesport.com that Shannon might have been offered $100,000 more ($300,000) than he was making ($175,000).

SOUTH FLORIDA: Former Duke coach Carl Franks has been hired as the Bulls’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator and Lawrence Dawsey has been hired as the receivers coach. Last season, Dawsey was a grad assistant at LSU. (Tampa Tribune)

BSC ADDS FIFTH BOWL: The Bowl Championship Series has added a fifth bowl beginning in 2006 after a group of presidents representing the six BCS conferences and the Coalition for Athletics Reform (Conference USA, MAC, Sun Belt, Mountain West and WAC) met in Miami this weekend. The non-BCS bowls had threatened legal action if their members did not have some access to the BCS bowls. No non-BSC school had been chosen for an at-large bid in the six-year history of the BCS. The coalition wanted a greater share of the $90 million driven by the BCS. All but $6 million goes to the six BCS conferences. The additional bowl would become a part of the BCS national championship rotation (Fiesta, Sugar, Rose and Orange since 1998). Now instead of non-BCS team only able to be selected in the top six of the BSC ratings, they are allowed in if they finish in the top 12-15. Scott Cowen, the Tulane president and leader of the non-BCS schools, said under the new system a team from the non-BSC conferences would have qualified in four of the past six years. Also, the status of the Big East as a member under the new agreement will not change. The next meeting of the BCS commissioners is April 26-27 in Phoenix. (CBSportsline.com)

Potential problems are how much money the restructure BCS is worth when commissioners go to renegotiate the deal? Will people watch Tulane or TCU in a BCS game? Will the network that lands the deal go for it?
