GEORGIA: The next two seasons look promising for Georgia because the Bulldogs lose only eight players due to eligibility following the 2004 season including quarterback David Greene, defensive end David Pollack and receivers Fred Gibson and Reggie Brown. The other four that will be leaving are tailback Albert Hollis, fullback Jeremy Thomas, linebacker Arnold Harrison and defensive end Will Thompson. Seven of the eight are starters. Three other juniors—Max Jean-Gilles, Odell Thurman and Thomas Davis- might consider leaving. (UGASports.com)

KENTUCKY: Kenny Ray Turner (6-7, 270), an offensive tackle from Trigg (Kentucky) County, is the first commitment for 2005. He is receiving interest from Louisville, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Marshall. (Kentucky Sports Report)

TENNESSEE: Seniors Kevin Burnett and Michael Munoz have been elected captains again. They are the first Vols to repeat as captains since J. G. Lowe in 1924-25. Other elected captains are senior Tony Brown and Jason Respert and juniors Jason Allen and Parys Haralson. (Volquest.com) Tennessee has won at least eight games for 15 straight seasons, joining Michigan (19) and FSU (17) as the three teams with such a streak. (SECSports.com)

SOUTH CAROLINA: Gamecock fans could be losing patience with the coach Lou Holtz if attendance at his recent speaking engagements is any indication. Attendance at three of the four club meetings was down from last year. The Charleston County club canceled its annual golf tournament last month due to lack of interest. A dinner later that night drew 170 fans compared to the average 600 fans following USC’s two Outback Bowl seasons. Holtz said redshirt freshman Blake Mitchell will be better than Phil Petty in time. (The State)

MISSISSIPPI STATE: David Stewart, who has made 24 consecutive starts at offensive tackle, was honored with the Bulldog Award at the end of spring practice. Quarterback Omarr Conner and defensive end Deljuan Robinson were also honored. (Bulldogblitz.com)

LSU: Strong safety Joe Lawrence tore his ACL in his knee during the spring game. He will be out for around four months, but is hopeful to return for the season. The injury was not from contact. Lawrence, who is 27-years-old, played baseball in the Toronto Blue Jay organization. (Advocate.com) A $60 million project to replace the west upper deck of Tiger Stadium has begun. The project work schedule will increase to 24 hours, seven days a week after the final home game Nov. 21. (SI.com) Tommy Moffitt has been named the 2003 College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by America Football Monthly. He has been with LSU for four years. Coach Nick Saban along with senior defensive end Marcus Spears, senior cornerback Corey Webster and junior offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth have been selected to the 2004 Playboy All-American team. (Tigerbait.com)

ALABAMA: Bill McDonald, the Tide’s longtime trainer, will be inducted in the National Athletic Trainer’s Association Hall of Fame in June. He joins the late Jim Goosetree as Alabama’s H-O-F inductees. Junior offensive guard Von Ewing (6-5, 304) had a star part in Theatre Tuscaloosa’s production of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. He is a theatre major. (SECSports.com) John Parker Wilson, a 2004 Tide signee, is scheduled to workout for the Anaheim Angels on May 30. If Wilson is drafted high, obviously his future with Alabama would be in doubt. Because of the pro workouts, Wilson will also miss the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game on June 5. Wilson was the Class 6A Back of the Year. (Al.com)

ARKANSAS: The 2004 season will mark the 40th and 50th anniversary of the 1964 national championship (the school’s only football title) and the 1954 Southwest Conference title. (SECSports.com)

OLE MISS: Ticket sales are ahead of last year by 267%, with more than 5,400 more season tickets sold this year as compared to the same time last year. Last year, 42,000 season tickets were sold. Ole Miss plays six home games this year against Memphis, Vanderbilt, Arkansas State, Tennessee, Auburn and Mississippi State. (RebelGrove.com) Three of the past five starting quarterbacks (Eli and Peyton Manning and Heath Shuler at Tennessee) David Cutcliffe has coached have been first round draft choices. (Clarion Ledger)

CLEMSON: Former Tiger coach Danny Ford, who was 96-29-4 at Clemson, could become more involved with the program according to school president Jim Barker and AD Terry Don Phillips, who is friends with Ford after they coached together at Virginia Tech in the 1970s. The extent of his involvement at this time is unclear. He might be playing a role in fund-raising. Ford, who was dismissed in 1989, said he is open to the possibilities. Ford, Phillips and IPTAY leaders were rumored to be meeting Thursday to iron out the details. (The State and TigerIllustrated.com)

FLORIDA STATE: Signee J. R. Bryant, who is from Killian High in Miami, told Warchant.com that he has made a passing score on his ACT. He is still waiting on the NCAA Clearinghouse. Nole receiver Cro Thorpe told Warchant.com that he is healthy after recovering from a broken leg that he suffered against N. C. State. He finished the season with 51 catches for 994 yards and 11 touchdowns. Thorpe is now 199 pounds, which is 37 pounds heavier than his freshman weight. He hopes to be 205 by the Miami game. Thorpe is 6-foot-2, close to 200 pounds and can run a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash.

MARYLAND: Terp coaches are excited about the potential of tight end Vernon Davis, who is a 6-foot-3, 231-pound specimen. He caught two scoring passes in the spring game. (AJC.com)

VIRGINIA: Chris Cook (6-3, 192), a cornerback from Lynchburg (Va.) Heritage is commitment No. 11. He chose Virginia over Virginia Tech. (Wagononline.com)

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: The Trojans were the top pick of Tony Barnhart in the Atlanta Journal Constitution Spring top 25. Georgia was No. 2, LSU No. 5, Miami No. 6, FSU No. 8, Florida No. 13, Tennessee No. 15, Maryland No. 17 and Virginia No. 18. Junior Matt Leinart returns for his junior season. Reggie Bush, who had 1,331 all-purpose yards as freshman last year, and a solid offensive line that found three new starters rounds out the offense. The defense returns six starters and six more players who have started at some point in their career.

JUSTIN RASCATI: The Louisville freshman quarterback, who was interested in transferring to South Florida, will land at Division I-AA James Madison. USF never offered a scholarship according to Rascati’s father, Jim. He will have three years of eligibility remaining. (Tampa Bay Online)
