SOUTH CAROLINA: The “Lunch with Lou” banquets held on Fridays before home games might be cancelled this year because coach Lou Holtz wants to be totally focused on the football team. Holtz has done the luncheon in each of his five years with the team. The turf in Williams-Brice stadium is being resod after the field was in sandy condition most of last season. Holtz is pondering a switch to black helmets as requested by the players. When Holtz took over in 1999, USC switched from garnet to white helmets. Signee Dorian Capers pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, three weeks after he was arrested for armed robbery following an incident at a convenience store. His future with USC is in doubt, even though he plans on attending Georgia Military College this fall. (The State) Signee C. J. Barber is expected to attend either Hargrave Military or Fork Union Military. In other news, Kris Mick is on schedule to return to action on the offensive line this fall and defensive lineman Charles Silas is on track to be eligible for the fall contrary to rumors. ALABAMA: Signee B. J. Stabler, the state of Alabama’s top offensive line prospect has qualified academically according to his high school coach Allan Floyd from Clarke County. Stabler (6-5, 303) is scheduled to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game June 5. (Mobile Register) Receiver signee Nikita Stover is expected to begin his college football career at a Mississippi Junior College. Sophomore running back Nic Luke is transferring to Tennessee State. His brother, Kelcey, who plays at Auburn, is also transferring to the same school. (BamaOnline.com)
GEORGIA: The annual Georgia Gridiron for Gals will be held Friday, June 18 at the school. The clinic features coach Mark Richt, his wife Katharyn and athletic director Vince Dooley and assistant coaches. The ladies will visit the academic center and tour the weight room and locker room. The application fee is $100. Defensive end signee Brandon Lang has not qualified yet. If he does not get the required scores then he is planning on attending Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. Bryan Evans (6-0, 175), an athlete from Ed White High School in Jacksonville has received an offer from the Bulldogs. He also has offers from Michigan, Tennessee, FSU and Auburn. Evans admitted that he was leaning toward LSU. Bartley Miller, who the starting tight guard in 2003 will apparently take a redshirt season because he needs to recover from shoulder surgery. Starting split guard Josh Brock, who also had shoulder surgery, is not expected to return until October. With Miller and Brock out, junior Max Jean-Gilles is moving from tight tackle to guard. The first team tackles then will be Dennis Roland and Dan Inman. Ken Shackleford, who played as a true freshman last year, will be the third tackle.
FLORIDA: The Gators have offered Darius Dewberry (6-4, 220), a linebacker from Fort Valley (Ga.) Peach County High. He likes Auburn, Florida, Miami and Georgia. Eddie Tabasky (6-3, 320), a center from Daytona Beach Mainland High, is being recruited by Harvard, Penn, Florida, FSU, UCF and Navy. Tabasky plans on camping at Florida, Harvard and LSU. He benches presses 375-pounds and squats 635-pounds. Tabasky has a 4.4 grade point average. Florida has offered Craig Roark (6-3, 295), an offensive lineman from Ada, Oklahoma. He has 15 offers including the Gators. UCLA, FSU, Ohio State, Alabama, Missouri, Kansas State, LSU and Nebraska, among others have offered. (GatorBait.net) Defensive end Joe Cohen faces a disorderly conduct and criminal mischief charges. Cohen, a sophomore defensive lineman, was arrested after he admitted lifting a motorized scooter over his head and throwing it to the ground. Cohen told a policeman that he had been drinking. AUBURN: Coach Tommy Tuberville told AuburnSports.com that he visited 12-15 high schools during the May evaluation period. Tiger backup quarterback Kelcey Luke is transferring to Tennessee State. Luke was behind backup quarterback Brandon Cox after spring practice. Auburn now has five quarterbacks on scholarship with the loss of Luke and Josh Sullivan, who left weeks ago. Former Tiger cornerback Lamel Ages, recently decided to transfer to Tennessee State. Of the 25 players the Tigers signed in February, only defensive tackle Greg Smith from Chattanooga, Tenn., is not expected to qualify. (Mobile Register)
OLE MISS: Dating back to the Egg bowl win in 2002, Ole Miss is 12-4 in its last 16 games. Ole Miss has had a streak of seven straight winning seasons since 1997. This is the first time this has happened since 1965-71. Former tailback Deuce McAllister donated $1 million to the university toward the construction of a new indoor practice facility. TENNESSEE: Last week, Vol offensive coordinator Randy Sanders went to Deerfield Beach, Fla., to tutor signee Brent Schaeffer about the Tennessee offense. Schaeffer is left-handed and has the ability to run the ball well. He is coming to Knoxville in June in order to start the first session of summer school. (Volquest.com)
LSU: Rob Schoenhoft (6-5, 230), a quarterback from St. Xavier High in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been offered by the Tigers. He plans on camping at LSU next month and Florida, Michigan State, Notre Dame and maybe Michigan later this summer. (TigerBait.com)
GEORGIA TECH: The Yellow Jackets are busy recruiting players in Jacksonville, Florida including Sandalwood players Maurice Wells and Marvin Sapp. They have also offered First Coast linebacker Ryan Stamper (6-3, 220). North Carolina, Auburn, Florida, Clemson and South Carolina are in his top five. Tony Clark (6-1, 190), a defensive back from Groves High outside of Savannah, has committed to Tech. Clemson, Middle Tennessee, and East Carolina have offered him. (JacketsOnline.com)
VIRGINIA: The Cavs already have 13 verbal commitments. Rivals.com has the Cavs slightly ahead of LSU (eight commitments), Texas A & M (eight) and Michigan (four). The big name of the group so far is quarterback Vic Hall, who is from Gretna, Va. (WagonOnline.com)
CLEMSON: Barry Humphries (6-3, 291), a lineman from Belton-Honea Path has committed to the Tigers. He is the state of South Carolina’s top rated lineman prospect. Humphries, who bench presses 405-pounds and squats 575, has offers from North Carolina, Maryland, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and Marshall. Signee Bobby Hutchinson, an offensive lineman from Madison County in Greenville, Fla., told TigerIllustrated.com that he has qualified. He was rated as the No. 12 center prospect in the nation.
FLORIDA STATE: Signee Kenny O’Neal ran the 60 meters in 6.68 seconds during an indoor meet. That is the fastest time in the nation this year and would have been a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Nole tailback Lorenzo Booker was riding his bicycle home from class last week when he was hit by a car. Booker said the girl got out of the car, asked if he was okay, moved his bike and drove off. The only injury he sustained was his shin. Booker is now 200 pounds and recently ran a 4.3 in the forty-yard dash. Darius McClure, a defensive back signee from Alabama, has qualified after taking his ACT over again. He will play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game June 5. (Warchant.com)
