SEC TV SCHEDULE: The first three Jefferson Pilot games have been selected: Sept. 4-South Carolina at Vanderbilt, Sept. 11-Auburn at Mississippi State and Sept. 18-Vanderbilt at Ole Miss.
SEC REVENUE: The SEC dished out $108.8 million last Friday. Most of the money was brought in by football including $44.5 million from TV, $21 million from bowls and $12.5 million from the title game.
GEORGIA: The Bulldogs first SEC game against South Carolina has been selected for an ESPN telecast at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 11, in Columbia. Defensive end David Pollack is on the preseason watch list for the 2004 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award. TENNESSEE: Signee Jonathan Hefney has qualified and is enrolled in summer school. Hefney, a freshman cornerback, spent last season at Hargrave Military Academy. Receiver James Banks, who was suspended indefinitely in the spring, is also enrolled in the first session of summer school. (Tennessean.com)
AUBURN: Tiger signee Jerald Watson, a running back from Morgan City (La.) Central Catholic, is deciding between an offer from the Florida Marlins after being drafted in the 40th round or playing football with Auburn. (AuburnSports.com)
LSU: Tiger signee Xavier Carter from Palm Bay High ran the fastest 200-meter time in state history, 20.49 seconds, in an AAU qualifying meet at First Academy. (Orlando Sentinel) Ryan Perrilloux (6-2, 207), a quarterback from East St. John High in Louisiana, is one of the highest rated prospects in the nation. Florida quarterback coach Ed Zaunbrecher told his coach Larry Dauterive that Perrilloux was the best quarterback that he has seen on film this year. Miami assistant coach Dan Werner said Perriloux was the best high school quarterback he has ever seen. LSU coach Nick Saban has been by to visit with the East St. John coaching staff along with a host of other coaches. (TigerBait.com)
FLORIDA: Linebacker Howard Lingard is rumored to have asked to be released from his scholarship. Lingard, a freshman who saw action in nine games for 81 plays last year. The only sure thing right now is that Lingard is not enrolled in Summer A classes. Summer A classes are not mandatory. His departure would leave Florida with only five returning scholarship players—Channing Crowder, Earl Everett, Travis Harris, Todd McCullough and Taurean Charles. Incoming freshmen Brandon Siler and Javier Estopian might have a chance to play immediately. Lineman Mo Mitchell has reported for voluntary workouts in much better shape than last year. Defensive tackle Marcus Thomas is fully healed from his hernia operation. Tight end Markell Thompson has lost nearly 20 pounds since January when he was 284. Defensive end Jeremy Mincey is up to 260 pounds. Receiver O. J. Small has recovered from his finger surgery. (GatorBait.net)
ALABAMA: Former Tide great linebacker Lee Roy Jordan said at a recent golf tournament that this year’s Alabama team has a lot of average football players. Coach Mike Shula said defensive tackle Anthony Bryant should be academically eligible for the fall. Bryant is hoping to regain the year of eligibility that he lost as a partial qualifier in 2000. MISSISSIPPI STATE: Bulldog signee Rory Johnson, a linebacker from Vicksburg High, takes the ACT for the final time this weekend. He told BulldogBlitz.com that he needed only a small increase on his test score in order to be eligible.
SOUTH CAROLINA: Antonio Wardlow (6-1, 185), a safety from Winston-Salem (N.C.) Parkland High, is planning on visiting South Carolina during the summer. He told GamecockCentral.com that he has offers from Tennessee, Clemson, Maryland, USC, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest and Duke.
OLE MISS: Eric Block (6-3, 265), an offensive lineman from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, is receiving interest from Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan State, Alabama and Ole Miss. He attended the Rebels spring game in April. Season ticket sales are still robust for the Rebels. As of May 30, ticket sales are ahead of last year’s pace by nearly 60%, with over 8,600 more season tickets sold this year. (RebelGrove.com)
FSU: In 2007, the Noles will have only five home games because they travel to Colorado, in a two-for-one schedule deal, and to Florida. Last week, it was announced that Troy State has been added to the 2006 schedule. Nole officials are looking for an additional opponent for next season. Athletic director Dave Hart told Warchant.com last week that Miami and FSU are looking at extending their annual game, which is now a conference game, beyond the next two seasons. Over 60 players took part in the voluntary workouts starting this past Monday. Cro Thorpe was at the workouts, but he has been advised by the doctors not to make hard cuts. He is scheduled for another checkup June 21. Antonio Cromartie was also at workouts after having his knee scoped. Center David Castillo has not been released to take part in drills, but he was also at workouts. Tight guard Bobby Meeks is recovering from shoulder surgery and from having his tonsils removed. Linebacker A. J. Nicholson recently underwent a minor procedure on his knee and expects to be cleared by early July. Lorenzo Booker is now up to 198 pounds with 7% body fat. He also can bench 225 pounds 25 times. He also said he ran a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash last Saturday. Guard Matt Meinrod has gained 10-15 pounds and is now up to 315. Defensive lineman Charles Howard has gained 10 pounds and he weighs 270 now. (Warchant.com)
MIAMI: Cane signees Rashaun Jones and George Timmons, teammates at Lake City (Fla.) Columbia High, told CaneSport.com that they will be coming to Miami this month. The academic status for both is still slightly unclear. A source told CaneSport that Jones should be admitted, while Timmons’ status is unclear. Also, their position status is unclear. NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels begin their season with a 1:35 p.m. kickoff against William & Mary, Sept. 4, at home. UNC has home games against Georgia Tech, Louisville, N. C. TEAM FLORIDA: High school all-stars from the states of Florida and Louisiana are featured in the Florida-Louisiana All-Star Classic Saturday, June 12, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports: FSU signees playing in the game are fullback Joe Surrant of Pace, running back Lamar Lewis of Trinity Christian, receiver Greg Carr of North Marion, kicker Gary Cismesia of Bradenton Lakewood Ranch and offensive lineman Dumaka Atkins of Sarasota Booker. Miami signees are defensive end Chris Zellner of Sarasota Booker and defensive lineman Joe Joseph of Oak Ridge. Louisville signees are running back George Stripling of Jacksonville Jackson and linebacker Lamar Myles of Eagle Lake Lake Region. ALABAMA VS MISSISSIPPI ALL-STAR GAME: Tribble Reese, a Clemson signee completed 12-of-15 passes for 140 yards and two scores in Alabama’s 24-22 win over Mississippi last Saturday night in Mobile in front of 9,000 fans. Alabama signee Marcel Stamps caught a 56-yard touchdown pass. Marcus Manson, a Florida signee, ran for 55 yards on nine carries. (Mobile Register)
BCS: Beginning in the 2006 season, each of the four current BCS bowls will host a second game in the year it hosts the national title game. The bowl commissioners are calling the format“double-hosting”. In this working model, the four BCS bowls-Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange-will stage their bowls Jan. 1 and one of them will host the national title game the following week. (AJC.com)
