FLORIDA: In games played in Knoxville, Tennessee leads 10-7. The teams have split the last six meetings. The winner of this game has played in the SEC title game eight times. Five of the last eight meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. Quarterback Justin Midgett will not travel with the team. He refuses to discuss the situation. Kenny Parker and Ray McDonald will share time at defensive tackle. The Kentucky game will be televised by ESPN2 at 6 p.m. (GatorBait.net)
TENNESSEE: In last year’s game, the Vols held the Gators to 73 yards rushing. Vol Coach Phil Fulmer is 4-8 against Florida. He is 3-3 the past six years. Tennessee has not beaten the Gators back-to-back since 1970-71. The home team has not won in the series since 1999. Fulmer said he is keeping the two-quarterback system with Brent Schaeffer and Erik Ainge. Freshmen Jonathan Hefney and Jonathan Wade will get their first start at cornerback against Florida. In all, three players will be getting their first starts in the secondary Saturday night. Tailback Cedric Houston has recovered from his sprained ankle. Vol linebacker Kevin Burnett refused to comment on his remarks at SEC media days criticizing Gator quarterback Chris Leak. C. J. Leak, the brother of Chris, has declined media requests this week. VANDERBILT AT OLE MISS: The Rebel defense has been on the field an average of 78 plays per game, most in the SEC. Ole Miss has won 10 of the past 11 games in the series. Vandy beat Ole Miss 37-34 in overtime in 1999. Rebel quarterback Ethan Flatt is starting this week instead of Micheal Spurlock at quarterback. MARSHALL AT GEORGIA: The Thundering Herd have capable offensive threats in running back Earl Charles, who rushed for 72 yards on 16 carries in the loss to Ohio State, receiver Josh Davis (231 catches in four years), and quarterback Stan Hill. Marshall has 20 straight winning seasons. Bulldog free safety Thomas Davis is second in the SEC with 20 tackles. Quarterback David Greene is 34-8 during his career. Georgia is averaging 170 yards on the ground. Offensive line coach Neil Callaway attributed the improvement to the blocking of the receivers, especially Reggie Brown. Tyson Browning and Michael Cooper will see a lot of action this week at tailback after the loss of Danny Ware with a lung contusion. (UGASports.com and SECSports.com)
LSU: The Tigers are 35-2 under Coach Nick Saban when leading at halftime and 33-2 when leading after three quarters during the same time. Also under Saban, LSU is 35-0 when scoring at least 25 points. They are 27-1 when holding opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing and 20-0 when a LSU player rushes for more than 100 yards. The Tigers have rushed for more yardage than its opponents during the 10 game winning streak. Last year, LSU won 31-7. Auburn ran for just 50 yards, while LSU’s Justin Vincent rushed for 127 yards. AUBURN: The Tigers are 18-5 in September games under Coach Tommy Tuberville. The teams have split the last eight meetings. In the last six meetings, the scoring margin has been 12 points or more. In last year’s loss to LSU, the LSU defensive line dominated the Auburn offensive line. Tiger tailback Carnell Williams was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week for a record eighth time this week after his 122-yard performance against Mississippi State. WESTERN CAROLINA AT ALABAMA: Bennett Swygert, a South Carolina transfer, is the quarterback for Catamounts. A win would give Alabama a 3-0 start for the first time since 1996. Next week, the Tide travels to Arkansas. Former Alabama signee Chris Felder, who is playing for Butler Community College, said he is being recruited hardest by Alabama. LOUISIANA MONROE AT ARKANSAS: This is not the first trip to SEC territory this season for ULM. Auburn beat ULM 31-0 in its opener. The Indians will attempt to spread the out the Hog defense. Coach Houston Nutt is trying to solve the Hog turnover problem. In last week’s game against Texas, Arkansas committed four turnovers compared to none for Texas. (Hawgsports.com)
MAINE AT MISSISSIPPI STATE: The Black Bears are 1-1 after a loss to Montana and a win over Northern Colorado. Maine was a preseason No. 11 in NCAA I-AA. They are ranked No. 17 in Division I-AA. The Bears like to run the ball with senior tailback Marcus Williams. Maine has not faced a Division I-A team since 1991. Bulldog reserve guard Otis Riddley has a torn ACL. Receiver McKinley Scott has a severe hamstring pull. Coach Sly Croom said freshmen Mario Bobo, a cornerback and redshirt freshman Jason Husband will see much more playing time. SOUTH FLORIDA AT SOUTH CAROLINA: USF beat Tennessee Tech in its opener. The Bulls were scheduled to play Pitt in their opener, but Hurricane Francis forced postponement of the game. South Florida co-defensive coordinator Wally Burnham was the defensive coordinator at South Carolina from 1994-98. USF is 1-5 against teams from BCS conferences. Syvelle Newton is the surprise starter at quarterback this week because Dondrial Pinkins has a sore shoulder that he hurt at some point in the Georgia loss. With Demetrius Summers continuing to be sidelined with an ankle injury, Cory Boyd is the starting tailback for the Gamecocks. Coach Lou Holtz said his offensive play calling was too conservative last week. Next week, Troy, who upset Missouri, comes to Columbia. (TheState.com and SECSports.com)
INDIANA AT KENTUCKY: The Hoosiers have beaten Central Michigan and Oregon. BenJarvus Green-Ellis has rushed for 188 yards on 57 carries in the first two games. Quarterback Matt LoVecchio has completed 15-of-32 for 192 yards with two scores and an interception. Indiana is 2-0 for the first time since 1996. Kentucky has won the last two meetings and eight of the last nine. Part of the problem for Kentucky in the loss to Louisville was three offensive linemen—tackles Michael Aitcheson and Hayden Lane and center Matt McCuthan were making their first starts. LOUISIANA TECH AT MIAMI: Sinorice Moss has been elevated over Ryan Moore as a starter at receiver. Moss has overcome several injuries, but is still bothered by a knee that was scoped earlier in the year. Moore dropped three passes during the FSU game. Linebacker Leon Williams has his right hand in a soft cast after breaking his hand in the FSU game. He is expected back in two weeks. Tight end Greg Olsen had two big catches against FSU. Another tight end, Kevin Everett, had three catches for 42 yards. Linebacker Roger McIntosh had a strong game against FSU with 10 tackles. (Canesport.com)
OHIO STATE AT N. C. STATE: Ohio State cornerback Dustin Fox sustained a broken arm in the win over Marshall. He is expected to be out for at least a month. Tailback Lydell Ross has rushed for 231 yards in two wins this season. Mike Nugent has four field goals of over 50 plus yards including the 55-yard game winner against the Thundering Herd. Receiver Santonio Holmes caught 10 passes for 218-yards last week and quarterback Justin Zwick threw for 318 yards. Ohio State is minus-seven in turnover margin. Wolfpack tailback T. A. McClendon is back at practice after rehabbing his tender hamstring. N. C. State has had a bye week, but Ohio State has an even bigger advantage being on the quarter system. CLEMSON AT TEXAS A & M: In the loss to Georgia Tech last week, the Tiger defense recorded seven sacks and held the Yellow Jackets to 112 yards rushing. The offense gained 474 yards. Despite two fumble and limited production, Yusef Kelly is still the starting tailback. The Aggies allowed Utah nearly 600 yards of offense, but rebounded to hold Wyoming to 181 total yards. UAB AT FSU: The Noles are ranked No. 117 in the nation in total offense. Nole quarterback Chris Rix is 6-2 in games after a loss. Freshmen--linebacker Jae Thaxton, linebacker Lawrence Timmons and defensive back J. R. Bryant-- played against Miami. The Nole defense has not allowed an opposing player to rush for 100 yards in 10 straight games. Junior safety Pat Watkins had eight tackles against Miami. Sophomore linebacker Buster Davis was third on the team with a career-high seven tackles. Davis is now the first team middle linebacker. Center David Castillo and tight guard Bobby Meeks practiced this week and are expected to play Saturday. Defensive back Antonio Cromartie is expected to play after X-Rays on his hip were negative. MARYLAND AT WEST VIRGINIA: Terp quarterback Joe Statham has thrown for 437 yards and two scores in his first two games. Maryland has won four straight games in the rivalry including twice last season. West Virginia quarterback Rasheed Marshall will have to carry the load, if tailback Kay-Jay Harris continues to be hampered by his hamstring. (Rivals.com)
