AUBURN: The Tigers won the SEC title with a win over Tennessee. Auburn finished with 207 yards rushing. The 12-0 Tigers have to settle for a Sugar Bowl appearance against Virginia Tech because they were third in the BCS ratings. In two games against Tennessee, Tiger quarterback Jason Campbell is 43-of-58 for 726 yards and five touchdowns. In the SEC title game, Campbell was 27-of-35 for 374 yards and three scores. Campbell was the game’s MVP. His passing yards and 431 total yards are SEC title game records. The Tigers 559 total yards were also an SEC title game record. Auburn converted 8-of-14 third down possibilities. The Associated Press has named Tommy Tuberville the SEC Coach of the Year and The Sporting News has selected Tuberville as the National Coach of the Year. Campbell, tailback Carnell Williams, offensive tackle Marcus McNeil, nose guard Tommy Jackson, cornerback Carlos Rogers and strong safety Junior Rosegreen were first team All-SEC AP selections. Former Gator coach Ron Zook has been named the new coach at Illinois replacing Ron Turner. He is the school’s 22nd head coach. Zook has been in the Big Ten before. He was defensive backs coach at Ohio State from 1988-90. Josh Portis (6-4, 200), a quarterback from Woodland Hills, Calif., is considering the Gators after he committed to Utah. He is the cousin of former Alabama guard Marico Portis and a relative of former Miami running back Clinton Portis. Meyer has called the Gator verbal commitments including Avery Atkins (5-11, 180), a cornerback from Daytona Beach Mainland. Atkins told Meyer that he was still committed. After former Gator offensive assistant Larry Fedora was not offered a coordinator position, he decided to go to Illinois with Zook. Reports out of South Bend are adding Notre Dame assistant Greg Mattison as a possibility to Myer’s staff. UF recruiting coordinator and running back Mike Locksley has decided to stay in Gainesville. Despite visiting Nebraska last weekend, Derrick McPhearson (6-0, 195), a receiver from Fork Union (Va.) Fork Union Military, said he is still committed to Florida. Ole Miss has spent $47 million over the past four years on improvements: $30 million to enclose the south end zone and $17 million for an indoor practice facility with coaches’ offices and a weight room. Sources close to the situation said the short list by Rebel chancellor Robert Khayat and athletic director Pete Boone had Louisville coach Bobby Petrino (the Cardinals have scored 55 points or more in five straight games), Southern California assistant coach Ed Orgeron and Zook. All the coaches besides Orgeron said they were not interested. Navy coach Paul Johnson, who was mentioned in an Internet rumor, said he was not interested in the job through a press release. Ryan Perrilloux (6-2, 210), a quarterback from East St. John’s in Louisiana, is going to officially visit LSU. Perrilloux (6-2, 210), who has committed to Texas, has attended four Tiger home games this season.
