GEORGIA: In the annual G-Day game, senior quarterback D. J. Shockley was 11- of- 19 for 193 yards and three touchdowns and one pick in the Red team’s 21-12 win over the Black team. Reserve quarterback Joe Tereshinski was 7- of- 12 for 104 yards. Redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Barnes was 4- of- 7 for 54 yards. Tailback Thomas Brown led the Bulldogs with eight carries for 67 yards. Redshirt freshman Kenneth Harris led the receivers with four catches for 95 yards. Bryan McClendon had four catches for 70 yards. Tight end Leonard Pope had two catches and two scores. Safety Greg Blue led the defense with seven tackles. Brown, Des Williams and Danny Ware were lined up in the wishbone formation on one series. Ware had 38 yards on nine carries. Tailback Tyson Browning had 52 yards on 10 carries. Coach Mark Richt said the wishbone would probably not be a regular part of the offense. Defensively, cornerback Tim Jennings picked off a Shockley pass and returned it 35 yards for a score.
Richt in his post game comments said he was glad to see offensive linemen Josh Brock, Bartley Miller and linebacker Tony Taylor return from injuries. He added that young receivers like Harris, A. J. Bryant and Demiko Goodman have progressed. Richt said the most dominating player on defense was nose tackle Gerald Anderson. Two defensive starters-Kedric Golston and Derrick White- were arrested early Sunday morning. Golston was arrested on charges of simple battery on a police officer. White was charged with disorderly conduct. Blue could benefit from a new NCAA proposal concerning partial qualifier rules that will help him earn his final year of eligibility. The new rules states that students unable to participate their first year as a result of being a partial qualifier will be able to gain an additional year of eligibility if they have completed 80% of their required credits instead of the previous 100%. ARKANSAS: Hog fans are set for the annual Red-White game on Saturday. The Hogs are down to seven healthy offensive linemen. Junior Cedric Washington has made the most progress at receiver. LSU: The Tigers went through a 120-play situational scrimmage Saturday. Coach Les Miles said tailbacks Joseph Addai and Alley Broussard had big plays. The backs are playing better because the line led by seniors Andrew Whitworth and Rudy Niswanger returns intact. Miles has repeatedly praised redshirt freshman left guard Brett Helms.
He also said sophomore defensive lineman sophomore Glenn Dorsey will play a lot more this season. Four scholarship players did not return for the spring—defensive lineman Sean Merrill and linebacker Matt Stoltz transferred to other schools, and linebacker Willie Demps and tight end Kory Herbert left for personal reasons. Dan Radakovich, the associate athletic director at LSU, has been contacted by South Carolina for their upcoming vacant athletic directors job. The other front- runner to replace outgoing AD Mike McGee is TCU AD Eric Hyman. (Tigerbait.com and theadvocate.com)
OLE MISS: Senior quarterback Micheal Spurlock led the Rebels with 222 yards on 16- of- 27 passing before nearly 25,000 fans in the annual Grove Bowl. The first team offense went against the second team offense. Spurlock, who tossed three, second half touchdowns, engineered a fourth quarter comeback after his team was behind 21-9. Coach Ed Orgeron said new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone has helped Spurlock with his mechanics. Quarterback Ethan Flatt was 11 of 18 for 122 yards. FLORIDA: With the defense limited to two blitzes and four down linemen, the offenses put on a show combining for 631 yards as the Orange beat the Blue 34-28 in front of a record crowd of 58,000 Saturday afternoon. Receiver Dallas Baker (6 catches for 134 yards) had three touchdown catches by halftime. One was a 39-yards bubble screen and a 31-yard catch beating defensive back Dawayne Grace. Receiver Chad Jackson (7 catches for 87 yards) got a step on defensive back Reggie Lewis and caught a 16-yard scoring pass. Receiver Andre Caldwell (8 catches for 149 yards) beat safety Jermaine McCollum for a 37-yard score over the middle. Quarterback Chris Leak (14- of- 20 for 221 yards and four scores) threw three scores before the end of the first quarter. Freshman quarterback Josh Portis (20- of- 30 for 253 yards) threw four scores. The defensive coaches were concerned that there were only four sacks in 52 pass attempts. Redshirt freshman tailback Markus Manson carried 13 times for 68 yards. Starting guard Jim Tartt will have shoulder surgery Monday that will force him to miss nearly four months. Although he did not play in the spring game, Meyer said linebacker Earl Everett is one of the best football players he has every seen. Free safety Jarvis Herring has impressed Meyer all spring. He said the most consistent player this spring has been Jackson followed by Baker.
The Gators have their first verbal commitment of the season as Chevon Walker (5-11, 190), a running back from Fort Meyers (Fla.) Riverdale, cast his lot with the Gators. In 13 varsity games, he has 2,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. Meyer spoke to a record crowd in Lakeland Tuesday night. He told the club that Portis could be the backup quarterback, there was no obvious starter at tailback and the offensive line was “above average”. Reggie Nelson, a safety from Coffeyville JUCO, has been taking a full load this semester according to coach Jeff Leiker and should be have enough credits to transfer to Florida next month. He went to Coffeyville because he lacked a math credit. (Gatorbait.net and Gainesville Sun)
SOUTH CAROLINA: In Wednesday’s scrimmage, the offense dominated the defense with three touchdowns and a field goal in nine possessions. Antonio Heffner, who was 6- of- 8 for 147 yards and a score, was the quarterback for 24 of the 48 snaps during the scrimmage. Blake Mitchell (0- for- 2) and Brett Nichols (1- for- 3 for 38 yards). Tailback Cory Boyd, who has recovered from a hamstring injury, carried three times for 46 yards. The Gamecocks have their spring game Saturday at 1 p.m. Coach Steve Spurrier said he would divide the teams up evenly for the spring game. Receiver Syvelle Newton was involved in an altercation with another student over the weekend, but the criminal charges have been dropped.
Spurrier said he would probably not release a depth chart after spring practice is over and he would probably not name a quarterback until the week of the UCF opener. Quarterback signees Cade Thompson and Tommy Beecher will also have a chance to compete early. Spurrier compared redshirt freshman receiver Sidney Rice to Chris Doering of Florida. The defense led by co-coordinators Tyrone Nix and John Thompson has dominated the offense all spring. (Gamecockcentral.com and The State)
ALABAMA: Andy Davis (6-0, 205), a safety from Briarwood Christian, has committed to the Tide. (Bamaonline.com)
TENNESSEE: Vol players have had 21 surgeries since January. Senior offensive guard Cody Douglas, sophomore defensive back Roshaun Fellows, sophomore defensive tackle Jared Hostetter and sophomore linebacker Ellix Wilson all had their right knees scoped. Defensive end Xavier Mitchell had lower back surgery in Los Angeles.
Vol quarterback Brent Schaeffer and receiver Bret Smith were arrested early Sunday morning at an on-campus dorm incident. Both have been suspended for the incident. During the past 13 months, 11 Vols have been arrested or cited for various reasons. The latest were defensive end Robert Ayers and linebacker Jerod Mayo who were arrested during a brawl at a fraternity party. Linebacker Daniel Brooks has been suspended for the first two games against UAB and Florida.
On a more positive note, offensive lineman Eli Ash has had a good spring since he came over from the defensive line. Defensive end Robert Ayers, who was suspended for his involvement in a fight a month ago, has also impressed the coaches. Inky Johnson is trying to find a place to play in the secondary. He has all the tools to do so. Fulmer said this week that if defensive tackle Demonte Bolden stays healthy, he could have an all-conference type year. (Volquest.com and Tennessean.com)
KENTUCKY: Junior linebacker Chad Anderson, who led the SEC in tackles per game his sophomore season before having a disappointing junior season, has been dismissed from the team. ESPN has picked up the Louisville game for a 3:30 p.m. Labor Day Sunday Sept. 4 afternoon broadcast. (Catspause.com)

FLORIDA STATE: In Wednesday’s scrimmage, once again the offense did not score a touchdown. Easily the most humorous play of the scrimmage was quarterback Wyatt Sexton trying to tackle rumbling linebacker Sam McGrew who took a tipped pass from quarterback Xavier Lee back 99-yards for a score. For some reason, Sexton tried to prevent McGrew from scoring, but easily lost the battle. FSU players were entertained, but offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden was not amused. Sexton was 2-of- 5 on the day. Receiver Kenny O’Neal had a decent scrimmage and tailback Lorenzo Booker had a 50-yard run. Lee started with the first team, but fumbled the first snap and then threw five straight incompletions. Drew Weatherford was 2- for- 5 for 23 yards. Two of the defensive stars were sophomore linebacker Lawrence Timmons and sophomore cornerback J. R. Bryant. Timmons replaced the injured Ernie Sims. Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said Timmons was one of the most improved players.
In Saturday’s scrimmage, Lee had three touchdowns on 7- of- 13 passing. His scrambling ability allows him to get past the defense to find the open receiver. Conversely, Bobby Bowden said Sexton, who was 6- of -12 for 26 yards, struggled last week because the offensive line couldn’t protect him. Weatherford was 4- of -11 for 53 yards. Receiver Greg Carr had three catches for 58 yards. Tailback Jamaal Edwards gained 63 yards on eight carries. Receiver De’Cody Fagg has a high ankle sprain. Receiver Lorne Sam is out with a foot injury. Defensive back Gerard Ross had a pick in the scrimmage to go along with a solid spring. Noseguard Clifton Dickson (two sacks, three tackles for losses) and McGrew (two sacks and two tackles for loss) led the defense. Sophomore David Overmyer has progressed at the left tackle position. Guards Cornelius Lewis and Jacky Claude have also made strides this spring. Defensive back Antonio Cromartie played some receiver Saturday and caught a 46-yard pass from Lee on his first play. Center/guard John Frady will have an MRI on his left shoulder to determine how bad his latest ailment is. (Warchant.com and Tallahassee Democrat)
GEORGIA TECH: Sophomore defensive tackle Darryl Richard will miss the upcoming season after tearing a ligament in his right knee. He played in all 12 games last year as a freshman and started four. In Saturday’s scrimmage, receiver Calvin Johnson had four catches for 146 yards and redshirt freshman James Johnson caught five passes for 79 yards and two scores. Quarterback Reggie Ball was 13 of 27 for 210 yards and two touchdowns and two picks. Cornerback Avery Roberson had two picks. The biggest problem has been the offensive line. (Jacketonline.com and Columbus-Ledger Enquirer.com)
MIAMI: In the spring game, the defense had seven sacks by the end of the first half and only two in the second half because of personnel changes. The quarterbacks were 18- of- 33 for 273 yards. The offense scored two touchdowns and one field goal. Kyle Wright was 10- of- 13 for 159 yards. Kirby Freeman was 7- of- 18 for 109 yards and two picks. Tailback Derron Thomas had six runs for 23 yards to lead the team. Receiver Darnell Jenkins had four catches for 72 yards. Defensive lineman Kareem Brown had 2.5 sacks. Six starters on offense and two on defense missed the spring game due to injuries. Offensive lineman Chris Napoli suffered an apparent severe knee injury in the game. (Canesport.com)
CLEMSON: The Tigers have their spring game Saturday. Following last Saturday’s scrimmage, coach Tommy Bowden said La’Donte Harris, who caught six passes for 67 yards, could be the most consistent receiver. Receiver Chansi Stuckey caught five passes for 79 yards. Bowden added that quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who was 15- of- 19 for 186 yards in the scrimmage and Will Proctor, who was 15- of- 24 for 173 yards, were performing well at quarterback. Bowden said senior tackle Cory Groover has been the most productive down lineman. According to several players, an argument with Bowden on the practice field has led to the suspension of running back Duane Coleman. (TigerIllustrated.com)
MARSHALL: Ohio State defensive coordinator Mark Snyder has been named the new head coach replacing Bob Pruett.
