ALABAMA: Coach Mike Shula was in Jacksonville, Florida Monday night and told BOL.com that he was pleased with the development of freshman John Parker Wilson at quarterback. He is also hoping that Will Oakley and Marcus McKnight, both from the Jacksonville area, will be a part of the receiver rotation in the fall. Shula expects redshirt freshman offensive lineman Antoine Caldwell to be a starter at guard. Former Tide head coach Mike DuBose has accepted the job of defensive coordinator at Millsaps College in Division III. DuBose is currently the coach at Luverne High School in Alabama. Former Alabama and Florida State recruiting coordinator Ronnie Cottrell has been hired as the head coach at Ozark High School in Alabama. (BamaOnline.com and Al.com)
TENNESSEE: After having a discussion with Coach Phil Fulmer last Friday, quarterback Brent Schaffer has decided to transfer. He will not be released to another SEC school or another school on the Vols schedule through 2008. There are unconfirmed reports that Schaeffer could end up at Tennessee Tech, Kansas, Pitt, South Florida or Central Florida. (Volquest.com and Tennessean.com)
FLORIDA: The 58,000 at the Orange and Blue game was more than the combined spring games at FSU, Miami, Auburn and LSU. Gator Urban Meyer told a Gator Gathering in Panama City that expects to see two of the three freshmen linebackers--Jon Demps, Ryan Stamper or Darryl Gresham, Jr.—to play this season. Meyer added that freshman quarterback Josh Portis has already gained 25 pounds since January. He is undecided on whether Portis will redshirt. Meyer said Reggie Lewis and Dawayne Grace needed a lot of work. Meyer told a crowd in Melbourne, Florida on Monday night, that former players would form two lines on the field at the start of the Wyoming opener for the current players to run through. Defensive end Tranell Morant is transferring to another school. He is related to former Gator basketball player Udonis Haslem. The Tennessee at Florida game might be picked up by CBS for a primetime game. UF student section will be called “Swamp Things”. (GatorBait.net and Gainesville Sun)
SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Steve Spurrier told a group of boosters that hatred is not the way to beat Clemson, but preparation and performance are. A fan told Spurrier at a club meeting that USC was not beating Clemson because the Gamecocks did not hate Clemson enough. Spurrier said after Florida beat Georgia six or seven years in a row that the Bulldogs hatred for the Gators did not help them. He told USC fans that they talk about Clemson too much. Spurrier also told a booster club that around 10 players needed “babysitters” compared to the 15 that he mentioned last week. He was asked by one fan if Georgia was gunning for the Gamecocks in the second game of the year. His response was, “I hope so”. Spurrier hinted that the school could lose up to three scholarships concerning academic eligibility issues. Woody Telfort, Moe Thompson and K. T. Mainord, all linemen, have been permanently dismissed from the team. (Gamecockcentral.com and The State)

FLORIDA STATE: There is no truth to the report in Tuesday’s Miami Herald that quarterback Xavier Lee is transferring. Sophomore guard Jacky Claude, who is 6-foot-4, 290, might have earned a starting position in the offensive line next season even over more experienced guards Matt Meinrod, John Frady and Cory Niblock. (Warchant.com)
LOUISVILLE: The Red team beat the White team 49-14 in the Cardinals spring game. Quarterback Brian Brohm was 23-of-29 for 390 yards and six scores. Tailback Michael Bush led all rushers with 92 yards on 19 carries. Receiver Joshua Tinch had seven catches for 133 yards. (CardinalSports.com)
OHIO STATE: The Gray beat the Scarlet, 19-6, in the annual spring game before 22,649 on a bone-chilling day with wind and rain. Quarterback Troy Smith led the Gray, but he threw the ball only 16 times. Antonio Pittman had 57 yards and fullback Brandon Schnittker had 58 yards running out of the tailback position. NOTRE DAME: Coach Charlie Weiss said he was pleased with the progress of his team after the Irish spring game. Notre Dame returns 10 on offense including tailback Darius Walker, who had 83 yards on 10 carries in the spring game. Quarterback Brady Quinn had a solid game. Weiss has improved his decision-making. Tight ends Anthony Fasano and John Carlson and receiver Rhema McKnight will be benefiting from Quinn’s improvement. The BCS is no longer a sweet deal for the Irish. In 2001, the Irish earned $14 million from playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Now the most they would get would be $4.5 million. In the new contract, they would get at least $1 million per year. Notre Dame will earn an automatic bid with a top eight ranking. (BlueandGold.com)
12TH GAME: The Division I Board of Directors has passed a proposed 12th game to be added to the schedule beginning in 2006. Proponents of the game argue that the players like it, it makes more money for the schools, it helps smaller school to comply with a new NCAA mandate to average at least five I-A home games. The game helps I-A leaders justify adding more bowl games. Playoff proponents argue that it is hypocritical that the NCAA wants to add the additional game and play the national title game on FOX on Jan. 8 of 2007, a week after the rest of the bowls have been played and then argue that a playoff system would extend the season too long. Fox has a four-year deal from 2007-10. (Orlando Sentential)
BCS: In 2007, automatic bids will go out to all Division-I conferences. Currently only six of the major conferences get automatic bids. There will be an appeals process if a conference doesn’t match up with the others under the new formula and believes it belongs in the BCS. (CNNSI.com)
NOT DRAFTED: Neither Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang nor Purdue receiver Taylor Stubblefield, both NCAA record setters, were drafted. (Ben Maller.com)
