GEORGIA: Six of the Bulldogs 19 signees have not qualified including receiver signee Jamar Bryant has been given his release so that he might attend East Carolina, which is closer to his home. Bryant played for Hargrave Military Academy last year. Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 12 prospect in North Carolina. Defensive end Corey Moon also did not score high enough on his SAT be eligible and will enroll at Virginia’s Hargrave Military Academy. Other Bulldog players who are ineligible are Jamar Chaney (denied admission), Antavious Coates (knee injury), Darius Dewberry (not qualified), and Brandon Sesay (not qualified). Senior safety Greg Blue, the team’s second-leading tackler last year with 80, has been added to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list given to the nation’s top defensive back. (AJC.com and UGASports.com)
FLORIDA: Terron Sanders (6-1, 195), a defensive tackle from Bradenton (Fla.) Southeast, has committed to Florida. Ohio State, Ole Miss, FSU, South Florida, North Carolina and Tennessee have also offered him. Three of the incoming freshman class-offensive lineman Ronnie Wilson, quarterback Josh Portis and offensive lineman Eddie Haupt- have been at school since January. Portis has gained 15 pounds while working to learn the offense. Wilson has lost 44 pounds and is down to 301. Haupt has gained 40 pounds, bulking up to 305. Eight players are left over from Steve Spurrier’s last recruiting class: center Mike Degory, offensive lineman Lance Butler, defensive back Vernell Brown, defensive back Jarvis Herring, linebacker Todd McCullough, cornerback Deshawn Carter, and offensive lineman Jonathan Marvin, who has played little. Jamar Hornsby (6-2, 195), the Jacksonville Sandalwood athlete, said his top school is Florida. Michigan, Georgia Tech, Georgia and Southern Cal are his other favorite schools. Hornsby, the No. 26 rated prospect according to Rivals.com, will also appear in a July issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED featuring the top prospects in the country by region. Former Tennessee quarterback C. J. Leak, the brother of Chris, has been hired by the Florida football office to assist the strength and conditioning staff. ARKANSAS: Matt Gilbow, a third-year sophomore offensive tackle, has been dismissed from the team because of inconsistency on the field and in the classroom. Jim Hart (6-6, 300), an offensive tackle from Pocahontas (Ark.) plans on attending the Arkansas Seniors Only Camp. He has offers from Mississippi State and Arkansas State. AUBURN: Former Southern Cal cornerback Eric Wright has been denied his release to UNLV. He is also considering Auburn, Fresno State, Miami and San Diego State. (L A Daily News.com)
LSU: Tiger receiver and punt returner Skyler Green had minor arthroscopic surgery to clear up some scar tissue on his left ankle late last month, but he is not expected to miss any fall drills. Green suffered a high ankle sprain and aggravated the injury in the season opener. He was less than full speed throughout the season. Junior defensive end Chase Pittman was arrested Wednesday night after admitting that he hit a man at a bar near the LSU campus. Pittman sat out last year after transferring from Texas. Pittman said he was coming to the aid of a female friend who he said had been grouped by injured man. (theadvocate.com)
TENNESSEE: The Vols have offered Oaks Christian of Westlake Village quarterback Jimmy Clausen, the brother of current Vol quarterback Rick, a scholarship along with South Carolina and most recently Southern Cal. The Trojans rarely offer scholarships to playing just entering their junior season. Linebackers Gerald Williams of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., and Andre Mathis of Erie, Pa., have not passed through the NCAA Clearinghouse. (LADailyNews.com, SI.com and VolQuest.com)
OLE MISS: Incoming freshman linebacker Wallace Bates has been dismissed from the team on drug-related charges. He was suspended from the team three days after pleading guilty in Lafayette County to possession of drug paraphernalia. He originally signed with Oregon State in 2004, but failed to meet NCAA academic standards. He sat out last season and was recruited by Ole Miss. (Clarion-Ledger)
SOUTH CAROLINA: Rodney Paulk (6-0, 205), a linebacker from Columbia (S.C.) Richland Northeast, is the first verbal commitment for the Gamecocks. Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Kentucky and East Carolina have offered him. The NCAA Clearinghouse has certified 25 of 26 Gamecock signees. The only non-qualifier is defensive lineman Jarriel King. ALABAMA: Quarterback signee Jimmy Barnes will be coached by his father, John, in an Orange County (Calif.) all-star game on July 8. He is expected to be in Tuscaloosa on July 10. Barnes is down to 220 pounds after losing nearly 20 pounds. His father said Barnes recently threw a pass that covered 73 yards. Three Tide signees—safeties Sam Burnthall and Travis Sikes and offensive lineman Cole Harvey—are expected to possibly grayshirt this season. Linebacker/fullback Prince Hall said he has qualified academically. Cornerback signee Michael Ricks will not qualify according to his father. Running back signee Mike Ford did not qualify and will attend Hargrave Military Academy. Defensive end Antonio Forbes did not qualify either and is looking to attend a junior college. MISSISSIPPI STATE: Since Wednesday, 18 Bulldog signees are on campus. State officials are still waiting on the NCAA Clearinghouse to certify five more signees. Jackson Provine signee Anthony Johnson will be attending Hargrave Military Academy. He is hoping to enroll next spring. Johnson had a key interception in the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game. FLORIDA STATE: FSU linebacker Ernie Sims was arrested early Wednesday for domestic battery and resisting arrest without violence on his live-in girlfriend, both misdemeanors. Sims said the argument came after he received a call from another woman. Sims has also had his car stolen recently. He had returned to workouts after rehabbing. Defensive lineman Brodrick Bunkley has joined voluntary workouts after progressing in the classroom. He is also rehabbing an injured ankle. After losing starter Clifton Dickson and reserve Chris Bradwell, Bunkley is needed on the defensive line. Receiver signee Rod Owens is turning heads during voluntary workouts. He made a highlight reel catch this week where he tripped during a pattern, put his hand on the ground to steady himself and dislocated his finger in the process, but still made the catch. Caz Piurowski (6-8, ), a tight end from Land O’Lakes High, committed to the Noles this week. After this season, the Noles lose three tight ends. Piurowski’s father, Paul, is a former FSU linebacker. MIAMI: Cornerback Glenn Sharpe is expected to miss the season after tearing an ACL. Sharpe, a junior, sustained a season-ending knee injury seven games against Tennessee into the 2003 season. Before the injury, he had broken up four passes and intercepted one. As a freshman in 2002, he started three games had 18 tackles and broke up three passes. He redshirted last season during his rehab. The injury leaves the Canes thin at cornerback with Kelly Jennings, Devin Hester, Marcus Maxey and several inexperienced players. The Labor Day night opener between UM and FSU could be the last one for awhile. Both schools have expressed concerns to ABC and the ACC about the early season timeslot. The game could go back to its usual mid-October date. This season the Canes play at FSU and at Clemson to begin the season. ABC/ESPN is trying to arrange a Miami/Oklahoma home and home series in 2007 and 2009. Miami is expected to have Florida back on the schedule in 2008 even though nothing has been announced. CLEMSON: Michael Parker (6-2, 183), a safety from Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater, has an offer from Clemson, Kentucky, and South Florida. Parker had an impressive performance in the NIKE camp in Tallahassee. Emanuel Francis (6-3, 185), a quarterback from Tallahassee (Fla.) Godby, still favors Clemson over more than three-dozen schools. Francis will be attending the Georgia camp this weekend. Clemson has not offered Francis, but he said would take accept if offered. (TigerIllustrated.com)
SOUTHERN MISS: Stephen Reaves, the former starting Michigan State quarterback, is expected to transfer to Southern Miss. Reaves, who started for Michigan State twice, is the son of former Florida quarterback John Reaves. A drunken-driving charge this past May against Reaves has been dropped. (SI.com)
