TENNESSEE: The Vols 2006 and ’07 schedules have been released. They open next season with home games against Cal and Air Force. Other non-conference games are at Memphis and home against Marshall. In 2007, the Vols open the season at Cal. They also play Southern Miss, North Illinois and Central Florida at home. The game at Cal is only the fourth West Coast opener in Vol history. (Volquest.com)
GEORGIA: Greg Billinger (6-2, 252), a defensive lineman from Lilburn, Ga., has committed to the Bulldogs. He chose the Bulldogs over Duke and Vanderbilt. Starting fullback Des Williams tore a pectoral muscle when a weight fell on him in workouts Wednesday. Coach Mark Richt intends on using a lot of two tailback sets making the use of a fullback limited at best. Redshirt freshman Brannan Southerland could take over the first team fullback spot. Southerland bench presses 405 pounds and squats 660. Former Bulldog players, David Green and David Pollack have joined together to build a sandwich shop on the Georgia campus. SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Steve Spurrier as many as seven players could lose their scholarships. Spurrier also said on Wednesday that he was disappointed that many players are no-shows for voluntary workouts this summer. He added that receiver Noah Whiteside, who was injured in the spring game, needs to be more committed to rehab efforts. Nearly all the quarterbacks have been in attendance. There is no change to tailback Cory Boyd’s situation. He is still suspended. Spurrier said Boyd still needs to clear up several matters before being reinstated. USC is still interested in scheduling a game with North Carolina, but Spurrier said Tar Heel officials have shown little or no interest. (GamecockCentral.com and The State)
OLE MISS: Rebel coach Ed Orgeron presided over a fantasy camp for men that included 75 participants and the annual Ole Miss Ladies forum with over 400 women in attendance. Domestic assault charges have been dropped against defensive lineman McKinley Boykin in an earlier dispute involving his girlfriend Patty Smith. (RebelGrove.com)
MISSISSIPPI STATE: Receiver Will Prosser broke his foot during voluntary workouts last week. He planted his foot to make a cut and broke a bone in his foot. He will be sidelined four to six weeks. Prosser should be back in time for the season opener. (Bulldogblitz.com)
ALABAMA: Preston Dial (6-3, 237), a tight end from UMS-Wright, has verbally committed to Alabama. He chose Alabama over FSU. He is the No. 14 rated prospect in the state of Alabama. Linebacker Freddie Roach is suing a Huntsville television station over an erroneous report last summer that accused him of being a subject of a police investigation. The Aug. 28 incident, involving a disturbance at a Sheffield night club, led police to arresting a different Tide linebacker Earnest Nance. Fox Sports Net has not selected Alabama’s opening game with Middle Tennessee for broadcast. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kickoff. It could be a pay-per-view affair. AUBURN: Bart Eddins (6-4, 260), a defensive lineman from Montgomery (Ala.) Trinity, has committed to the Tigers. His brother, Bret, and father, Liston, both play at Auburn. Alabama, Oklahoma, and Louisville also offered him. Neil Caudle (6-2 190), a quarterback from Hoover (Ala.) Spain Park, verbally committed to the Tigers. Rivals.com rates him as the No. 4 quarterback in the nation. Alabama, Miami, Michigan, LSU, South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Louisville offered him. He will also participate in Elite 11 camp quarterback. The Tigers have a commitment from Mario Fannin (5-11, 202), a running back/quarterback from Lovejoy, Ga. Fannin, who runs a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash, has a 305-pound bench press, 425-pound squat and a 35-inch vertical leap. The Tigers had six players on the first team SEC Coaches Preseason All-Conference team. Offensive tackle Marcus McNeil was the only unanimous choice. The Tigers had six first round picks. FLORIDA: The Florida football team will be 10 players under the maximum of 85 if the current roster stays academically eligible and defensive lineman Michael Hill does not return to the team. Florida has 34 offensive players and 39 defensive players and two special team players. Anthony Lewis (6-2, 220), a linebacker from Haltom City (Texas), lists Florida, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Missouri as some of his favorite teams. Wayne Brady of the popular ABC show “Who’s Line is it Any Way?” will bring his act to Gator Growl on Oct. 7. He will be paid $65,000 for his work. Antonio Logan-El (6-4, 307), an offensive lineman from Forestville (Md.) High, is interested in the Gators. Rivals.com ranks him as the No. 1 player in Maryland and the No. 16 overall player. Although he gave Maryland a soft verbal, he is interested in Penn State, Tennessee and Oklahoma. VANDERBILT: Commodore head coach Bobby Johnson is recovering from a broken left collarbone that he suffered in a bike accident while in vacation in South Carolina. His arm is in a sling. LSU: The Tigers had eight players named to the 2005 SEC Coaches Preseason All-Conference team. Offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, safety LaRon Landry and receiver Skyler Green were selected to the first team. A J Jones (6-2, 190), a linebacker from Middleton High in Tampa, has the Tigers among his favorite schools. South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State and Florida are also recruiting him. FLORIDA STATE: Assistant coach Kevin Steele said defensive tackle Callahan Bright, offensive lineman Matt Hardrick and linebacker Dan Foster will not enroll at FSU in the fall. Hardrick and Bright are expected to attend Hargrave Military Academy and Foster is going to enroll at Butler County (Kan.) Community College. Defensive end Justin Mincey has already announced that he will attend Hargrave Military Academy. FSU is still waiting on word from running back Matt Dunham. There is no resolution yet to the Ernie Sims altercation involving his girlfriend. Sims’ attorney said he expects the charges (especially the battery charge) will be dropped. The State Attorney’s office said they have yet to drop any charges. St. Augustine (Fla.) Nease High quarterback Tim Tebow is back from his mission trip and preparing for the EA Sports Elite 11 camp that begins next Monday. Florida State along with many different schools is still in the picture. Since his father is still on the mission trip there will be no verbal commitments this summer. After the opening game at Hoover, Ala., he will announce his official visits. In 40-yard dash testing on Tuesday, the freshmen stole the show: running back Antone Smith ran a 4.36, cornerback Michael Ray Garvin 4.37 and receiver Kenny O’Neal 4.31. The 40-times are electronically timed, generally considered faster than a hand-held stopwatch. Sophomore receiver De’Cody Fagg, who has gained from 192 to 215 pounds, has won the performance index test. He had a combination of 4.45 in the 40-yard dash, 38-inch vertical leap, 10- foot broad jump and a 3.91 pro shuttle. Linebacker Marcello Church was second. CLEMSON: Jeffrey Ogren (6-3, 185), a receiver from American Christian in Tuscaloosa, Ala., is verbal commitment No. 8 for the Tigers. Ogren, who runs a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash, chose Clemson over UCF, Auburn and Tulane. Clemson also received a verbal commitment from Kendrick Johnson (6-2, 170), a receiver from Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard. Johnson chose Clemson over Florida and Georgia. Tailback Duane Coleman has been reinstated to the team following his spring suspension after arguing with the coaches on the field.
