FLORIDA: Gator special teams had a big day (two field goals, downing two punts on the 1-yard line and a touchdown) in the win over Mississippi State. Defensive back Reggie Nelson downed two punts at the 1-yard line. Coach Urban Meyer said Nelson and defensive end Jarvis Moss will see more playing time. Quarterback Chris Leak was 18- of- 33 for 244 yards with two picks and one touchdown pass. Mike Degory (MCL), Chris Leak (shoulder), DeShawn Wynn (shoulder), Jemalle Cornelius (ankle) and Chad Jackson (sore knee) were all limited in practice the past two weeks. Baker caught 7 passes for 123 yards. He has two straight 100-yard games. Jackson caught 7 for 78 yards. Redshirt freshman tailback Markus Manson returned four kicks for 92 yards and run seven times for 45 yards. Defensive end Ray McDonald, who had his knee scoped, is scheduled to return for the Georgia game. Safety Kyle Jackson was benched in the second half after he failed to wrap up State receiver Keon Humphries on a 56-yard pass play. The defense allowed State only 10 first downs and 243 total yards. Florida quarterbacks have been sacked 20 in the first six games. Leak has run for 140 yards. Florida is No. 38 nationally in total offense (413 ypg) and No. 45 in scoring offense (29 ppg). LSU: The Tiger defense limited Vandy’s Jay Cutler to 11- of- 33 for 113 yard and two interceptions. Vandy had 25 yards rushing. Tiger tailback Joseph Addai had 102 yards on 24 carries. LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell was 21- of- 32 for 285 yards and one pick. Tiger receiver Dwayne Bowe caught five passes for 98 yards. Receiver Early Doucet caught five passes for 94 yards. The Tigers lost three- of- five fumbles. Receiver Craig “Buster” Davis suffered a concussion and a leg injury. He is questionable for the Florida game. After four games, LSU has averaged 10 penalties for 88 yards. They have turned the ball over 10 times. The Tiger defensive line has nine and one-half sacks. The ends have six sacks and the tackles have 3.5. LSU had 13 sacks against Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Florida has won nine- of- 11 and three straight at Tiger Stadium. Since 1992, LSU is 8-16 against Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn and Alabama at home. Tiger receiver Skyler Green is No. 4 in the SEC in all-purpose yards. The Auburn game in Tiger Stadium on Oct. 22 will be carried by either ESPN or ESPN2. Freshman quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has simulated Leak in practice this week. This is the first home game for the Tigers since the loss to Tennessee. The players have admitted that they were worn out emotionally in the second half of the Vol game. GEORGIA: The Bulldog won for the third straight time in Knoxville after beating Tennessee last week. Tailback Thomas Brown ran for 94 yards on 20 carries in the win. He scored on an 18-yard run in the fourth quarter. Bulldog defensive back Thomas Flowers ran a punt back for a 54-yard score in the fourth quarter. Georgia held the Vols to 48 yards rushing on 26 attempts. Georgia ran for 198 yards on 42 carries. Quarterback D J Shockley was 16- of- 27 for 207 yards. Tight end Leonard Pope caught four passes for 70 yards. Nine different receivers caught passes. Georgia sacked Vol quarterback Rick Clausen twice. Defensive tackle Charles Johnson recovered a Clausen fumble. Punter Gordon Ely-Kelso pinned Tennessee inside its 2-yard line twice. Starting linebacker Tony Taylor is expected to be out for two games because of a sprained elbow ligament. Starting defensive end Gerald Anderson is out due to concussion symptoms. Georgia is No. 7 in the nation in scoring defense allowing 11 ppg. Vandy is allowing 21 ppg. Georgia leads the SEC with a plus-nine turnover margin and total offense, averaging 455 ypg. The Dawgs are second in rushing (198 ypg) and passing (257). Tailbacks Danny Ware and Brown are averaging 5.3 ypc. The Bulldogs have beaten Vandy 10 straight times. The Dawgs have 13 sacks. Receivers A J Bryant and Mario Raley are out. When Georgia scores 18 points or more under Richt they are 42-0. VANDERBILT: Quarterback Jay Cutler leads the SEC in passing yards per game (248), total offense (275 ypg) and yardage (1,489). This is the fourth straight year that Cutler has started against Georgia. Vandy offensive line was a revolving door due to injuries against LSU. Three different starters sat out after being injured. Receiver Erik Davis is averaging six catches per game. In the last two games, Vandy has rushed for 127 yards. Vandy is No. 60 in pass defense, No. 71 in rush defense and No. 41 in scoring defense. ALABAMA: Two years ago, Rebel quarterback Eli Manning led Ole Miss to an easy win in Oxford. With the loss of receiver Tyrone Prothro on special teams, Brandon Brooks joins D J Hall on kickoff returns against Ole Miss. Several receivers such as Will Oakley will be looked at to step up in Prothro’s absence. Keith Brown and Hall, who are averaging 20 yards per catch, have only caught 23 passes combined. Tailback Ken Darby leads the SEC in rushing with 513 yards on 92 carries. Alabama is averaging 29 ppg and 402 ypg. The defense has 17 sacks and 22 quarterback hurries. The Ole Miss defense is good against the short passing game. LaBronski Hutchins (6-3, 177), an outside linebacker from Benjamin Russell of Alexander City, Ala., has committed to the Tide. Alex Stadler (6-6, 300), an offensive lineman from Bealeton, Virginia, has committed to Alabama. Stadler chose Alabama over Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. (Bamaonline.com)
OLE MISS: Tailback Mico McSwain, fifth in the SEC with 78 ypg, is averaging 7.5 ypc. Defensive end Corvelli Haynes is tending to a shoulder injury. The Rebel offense averages 312 ypg, No. 10 in the SEC. Receiver Mike Espy leads the team in receptions and receiving yards. He has caught 14 passes for 162 yards in the past two games. Receiver Mario Hill is back in the lineup after missing the Wyoming and Tennessee games. Linebacker Patrick Willis leads the SEC in tackles per game with 12. The secondary has allowed only two scoring passes this year. Ole Miss is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start in the SEC since 1984. Offensive lineman Andrew Wicker is out for the Alabama game. AUBURN: This is the first road game for starting quarterback Brandon Cox, fourth in the SEC with 236 total yards per game. He is completing 75% of his passes and no picks since the opening loss. The Tigers are preparing to stop the Hog running attack that leads the SEC. Auburn’s defense has allowed only 24 points in the last four games. ARKANSAS: Tailbacks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones set a record in the ULM win for Hog freshmen rushing for over 100 yards. McFadden rushed 11 times for 125 yards and two score and Jones ran 14 times for 102 yards and two scores. Arkansas ran for 321 yards. Arkansas has beaten Auburn four of the last six games. The team leading at half in nine of last ten games in the series has won. The Hogs are third nationally in rushing averaging 286 ypg, but they are No. 113 nationally in passing averaging 128 ypg. SOUTH CAROLINA: Quarterback Blake Mitchell was 23- of- 34 for 277 yards with one interception in the win over Kentucky. USC outscored the Wildcats 34-6 in the second half. Tailback Daccus Turman gained 81 yards on 18 carries. Receiver Sidney Rice caught eight passes for 125 yards. He is averaging 84 ypg. Linebacker Josh Johnson has been arrested for the second time this year. The latest arrest was early Sunday for simple assault, resisting arrest and interfering with police among others. The Gamecocks committed nine penalties for the second straight week. Five of the penalties were personal fouls. Syvelle Newton has been practicing at receiver, tailback and quarterback during the off week. Freshman tailback Mike Davis bruised his shoulder and his status for the Vandy game is unknown. TENNESSEE: Senior cornerback Jason Allen is out for the remainder of the season after dislocating his left hip in the loss to Georgia. Inky Johnson and Roshaun Fellows will try to replace him. Although Tennessee had 358 yards of offense, they also committed 12 penalties and three turnovers. Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders said quarterback Erik Ainge will play against Alabama. FLORIDA STATE AT VIRGINIA: The Noles gained 587 total yards in the win over Wake Forest. They gained 110 yards in their first 10 plays. Nole quarterback Drew Weatherford was 20- of- 31 for 351 yards and three scores. He leads all freshmen quarterbacks with 1,225 yards and 10 scores. Tailback Leon Washington ran for 87 yards and caught four passes for 92 yards. He didn’t reply to reports that Coach Bobby Bowden earlier in the week that he came into camp too heavy. Tailback Lorenzo Booker ran for 94 yards on 11 carries. Receiver Greg Carr caught three passes for 129 yards (43 yard average). He is averaging nearly 30 yards per catch, which is first among Division-I receivers. After Wake closed the gap, FSU score 21 points in the fourth quarter. The defense failed to force a turnover for the first time in 68 games. Conversely, the Noles had no turnovers. Offensive lineman Matt Meinrod suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle after taking a helmet to the leg. Junior John Frady has moved into his spot. Before this week, all of Frady’s starts have been at center. Linebacker A J Nicholson led the team in tackles with 12. Wake Forest gained 415 total yards including 247 rushing. Demon Deacon tailback Chris Barclay ran for 125 yards on 21 carries. Linebacker Ernie Sims wore infrared contact lenses that give his eyes a red tint-and better vision. Defensive end D J Norris hurt his shoulder in the game. Defensive lineman Darrell Burston is doubtful with an injured shoulder. Possible backup Anthony Kelly is out with a groin/hip injury. He could apply for a medical redshirt. The Noles are averaging 312 ypg passing, tops in the league. Anthony Leon (6-3, 210), a safety from Gulliver (Fla.) Prep in Miami, has committed to the Noles. Virginia has suspended offensive tackle Brad Butler for his late hit on BC defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka. Tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson has missed the last two games with a knee injury. Virginia is No. 11 in total defense in the league allowing 378 ypg. They are No. 11 in sacks with only nine. The Cavs are No. 8 in the ACC allowing 24 ppg. Quarterback Marques Hagans is No. 8 in passing yards averaging 207 ypg. Receiver Deyon Williams averages catching five passes per game.
WAKE FOREST AT BOSTON COLLEGE: Eagle quarterback Quinton Porter returned last week to lead his team to 301 yards and a touchdown. Wake has beaten BC the past two years. Wake averages 217 ypg rushing and BC holds it opponents to only 70 yards rushing. Wake’s Cory Randolph is completing 76% of his passes since returning as quarterback.
MIAMI AT TEMPLE (HC): The Canes had 255 yards rushing and 302 passing in the win over Duke. Tailback Tyrone Moss had 82 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Kyle Wright was 18- of- 31 for 255 yards with three touchdown passes and two picks. Receiver Ryan Moore had seven catches for 87 yards. Moss is the starting tailback, but the backup is a toss up between Charlie Jones, Derron Thomas and Andrew Johnson. Larry Coker said he is hoping tight end Buck Ortega is back.
