ALABAMA: The Tide beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl on Jamie Christensen’s 46-yard field goal on the last play of regulation. Christensen, who had two game winning kicks against Ole Miss and Tennessee, missed one field goal and had another one blocked. It was the second time in Cotton Bowl history that the game was decided on the final play. The other time was Notre Dame’s win over Houston in 1979. Alabama won its 30th bowl game. Tide quarterback Brodie Croyle was 19- of- 31 for 275 yards. Receiver Keith Brown had five catches for 141 yards including a 76-yard touchdown on Bama’s first possession. The Tide defense held Tech to a season-low 226 yards. Tech quarterback Cody Hodges was 15- of- 32 for 196 yards and one score. He also had 65 yards rushing. Alabama has won 10 games in a season, 28 times. Alabama has offered Greg McElroy (6-2, 212), a quarterback from Southlake (Texas) High, who had committed to Texas Tech. Southlake, won the 5A state title this season. Jake Jones (6-1, 177), a Mountain Brook (Ala.) High defensive back, has verbally committed to Alabama. He is the son of former Tide receiver Joey Jones.

AUBURN: The Tigers allowed 548 yards of total offense in the loss to Wisconsin. Badger tailback Brian Calhoun ran for 213 yards and quarterback John Stucco was 15- of- 27 for 301 yards. Coach Tommy Tuberville said he did not have his team ready to play. He also said Wisconsin had a lot of success at the corners. Tiger quarterback Brandon Cox was 15- of- 33 for 137 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tailback Kenny Irons had 88 yards on 22 carries and one fumble. Auburn defensive coordinator David Gibbs did not show for the media after the game. Receiver Brandon Williams had six catches for 173 yards. Tiger cornerback David Irons had 11 tackles. Tiger defensive end Stanley McClover announced that he is leaving early for the NFL.

TENNESSEE: Offensive lineman Rob Smith is turning pro. Tennessee is still awaiting any further announcements from offensive lineman Arron Sears. Defensive lineman Justin Harrell said he will return.

ARKANSAS: Alex Wood, a former NFL offensive coordinator, is the new quarterback coach at Arkansas. Backup quarterback Alex Mortensen, a redshirt freshman from Atlanta, might be interested in transferring to Division I-AA Georgia Southern.

FLORIDA: Gator quarterback Chris Leak threw for 277 yards and two scores in the win over Iowa. Florida receiver Dallas Baker had 10 catches for 147 yards. Coach Urban Meyer matched Ray Graves and Steve Spurrier for the most wins for a first year Gator coach with nine. Cornerback Vernell Brown returned a pass interception 60 yards for a score. Defensive back Tremaine McCollum ran six yards with a blocked punt. Iowa quarterback Drew Tate was 32- of- 55 for 346 yards and three scores. One of the big plays of the game was a fake punt on fourth and one from deep into Gator territory when fullback Billy Latsko got the first down. Florida earned its first bowl win since 2002. This was the first time in school history that the Gators beat its big three rivals (Tennessee, Georgia and Florida State) and won its bowl game. Florida gained 447 yards of offense. Freshman tailback back Kestahn Moore gained 88 yards on 13 carries. Iowa gained 410 total yards, the second most the season next to Vanderbilt’s 448. Marcus Gilbert (6-6, 270), an offensive tackle/defensive end, from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas was commitment No. 27 for the Gators over last weekend. The head of Conference USA officials said the referees made a mistake when Iowa was penalized for being offside late in the fourth quarter of the bowl game. Gator receiver Chad Jackson is reportedly going to declare for the NFL. Defensive back Dee Webb is also considering leaving early.

GEORGIA: The Bulldogs gained 501 yards and scored 35 points in the loss to West Virginia. Georgia rallied from a 28-0 deficit. The Mountaineers scored 21 points in 11 minutes. West Virginia had 501 total yards including 382 on the ground. Tailback Steve Slaton gained 204 yards on the ground and Pat White threw for 120 yards and rushed for 77. In losses to Florida, Auburn and West Virginia, the Bulldog defense has been outscored 42-10 in the first half. Georgia quarterback D. J. Shockley was 20- of- 33 for 277 yards and three scores. West Virginia ran out the clock after successfully faking a punt that went for a first down on fourth and eight. Butch Lewis (6-6, 280), a lineman from Aurora Regis Jesuit in Colorado, is down to Notre Dame, Southern Cal and Georgia. He will make his decision Saturday at the Army All-American game. Tight end Leonard Pope said he will leave early for the NFL draft, but junior defensive end Quentin Moses is undecided.

LSU: The 37-point margin of victory over Miami in the Peach Bowl was second only to Alabama’s 61-6 win over Syracuse in the Orange Bowl for a SEC team. LSU won 11 games for the third time in school history. The Tigers scored on all seven trips inside the red zone. Tailback Joseph Addai ran for 130 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Matt Flynn was 13- of- 22 for 196 yards. He also ran for 39 yards. Defensive end Melvin Oliver, the most valuable player on defense, had a sack to raise his career total to 21. Receiver Craig Davis caught five passes for 99 yards and one score. LSU ran for 272 yards on a defense that allows only 104 yards rushing per game. The Tiger defense held Miami to just 153 yards, six first downs (none in the second half), one- of- 12 third down conversions and 53 yards rushing. Cane quarterbacks were sacked four times and picked off once. Miami starting quarterback Kyle Wright was only 10- of- 20 for 100 yards. The Tigers could lose as many as four assistants in the offseason including offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and Bo Pelini.

SOUTH CAROLINA: The Gamecocks jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Missouri rallied to win the Independence Bowl game. Missouri’s Brad Smith gained 432 total yards. In the second half, Missouri outgained USC 330 –96 yards and 24-3. Receiver Sidney Rice caught 12 passes for 191 yards in the bowl game. Rice finished with 70 catches, the second single highest total next to Sterling Sharpe’s 74 receptions in 1986. In the second half of its last two games, USC was dominated 593 yards to 192. Gamecock freshman tailback Mike Davis had 132 yards rushing on 18 carries. Quarterback Blake Mitchell was 20- of- 38 for 266 yards with two scores and three picks. Nick Prochak (6-4, 210), a quarterback from Spartanburg (SC), has committed to the Gamecocks. Gamecock officials are working with ESPN to move the opener at Mississippi State game from Saturday, Sept. 23 to Thursday, August 31. Wofford is a possible opponent for the 2006 to fill in the Gamecock schedule.

OLE MISS: Former Miami offensive line coach Art Kehoe could be a candidate for the vacant Ole Miss offensive coordinator position. Orgeron might also talk to former offensive coordinator Dan Werner.

FLORIDA STATE: Penn State coach Joe Paterno moved within five wins of Bobby Bowden after the Nittany Lions beat the Seminoles by a field goal in triple overtime in the Orange Bowl. Penn State kicker Kenny Kelly, a freshman, hit a 29-yarder for the game winning points. FSU had 13 penalties for 129 yards. FSU kicker Gary Cismesia missed a 38-yard field goal in the third overtime and missed a 44-yard field goal wide- right in the first overtime. Penn State quarterback Michael Robinson fumbled deep into FSU territory and the ball was recovered by FSU’s Neefy Moffett. The Noles responded with a long drive that resulted in a field goal. Receiver Willie Reid scored on an 87-yard punt return and tailback Lorenzo Booker took a swing pass 57-yards for a score. Reid finished with 214 all-purpose yards. Redshirt sophomore cornerback Antonio Cromartie said he is leaving school to enter the NFL draft. Cromartie spent this season rehabbing his torn ACL. FSU quarterback Drew Weatherford, who was called for intentional grounding in the end zone that resulted in a safety, was 24- of- 43 passing for 257 yards. Freshman cornerback Tony Carter’s interception was the first of the year for any FSU player at that position. Both teams had 20 punts, the most since the 1947 game. Linebacker Ernie Sims is leaving early for the NFL. Tailback Lorenzo Booker is considering his options.

CLEMSON: The Tigers allowed Colorado only 124 total yards in their bowl win. Freshman tailback James Davis ran for 150 yards. Clemson ran for 169 yards and threw for 196 yards. Tiger quarterback Charlie Whitehurst was 19- of- 27 for 196 yards without a pick. Last season, Clemson averaged less than 300 total yards. This season they averaged 385 total yards under first-year coordinator Rob Spence. The defense, coordinated by Vic Koenning, allowed only 17 points per game, the lowest since 1994.

MIAMI: Kick returner Devin Hester has decided to skip his senior year to declare for the NFL draft. He is the 11th player to leave early in the past five years. Coach Larry Coker fired offensive line coach Art Kehoe, offensive coordinator Dan Werner, linebackers coach Vernon Hargreaves and running backs coach Don Soldinger. Possible replacements are N. C. State offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, former Tennessee offensive coordinator Randy Sanders, former East Carolina Steve Logan and San Diego tight ends coach Rob Chudzinski, Miami’s offensive coordinator before Werner. Graig Cooper (5-11, 185), a running back from Melrose High in Memphis, Tenn., has committed to the Canes. He chose Miami over Ole Miss and Oklahoma State.

VIRGINIA TECH: The Hokies outscored Louisville 22-7 in the fourth quarter of the Gator Bowl to win the game. Quarterback Marcus Vick was 11- of- 21 for 203 yards. Tailback Cedric Humes ran for 113 yards and a touchdown. Tech intercepted Hunter Cantwell, who was 15- of- 37 for 216 yards three times. The Hokies had the ball for 13 more minutes than the Cardinals. Linebacker James Anderson returned a Cantwell pass 39 yards for a score.

NORTH CAROLINA: Frank Cignetti, the former offensive coordinator at Fresno State, turned down Ole Miss to go to North Carolina.

RECRUITING: The Army All-American Game is this Saturday at 1 p.m. on NBC.

Brandon Spikes (6-4, 235), a linebacker from Shelby, N.C., will make his announcement Saturday at the Army All-American game. He is down to Alabama, Florida and Virginia Tech.

Sam Young (6-7, 285), an offensive lineman from Fort Lauderdale Thomas Aquinas, has eliminated Florida. He is down to USC, Penn State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Al Woods (6-4, 324), a defensive lineman from Elton, La., is also in the Army All-American game. He is favoring LSU, Michigan, Southern Cal and Florida.
