FLORIDA: An announced crowed of 45,200 watched the Orange team, led by quarterback Tim Tebow, beat the Blue team, led by Chris Leak, 24-6, last Saturday. Tebow was 15- of- 21 for 197 yards including a 16-yard scoring pass to receiver Kenneth Tookes. Fourteen potential starters missed the game. Tight end Cornelius Ingram caught seven passes for 58 yards. Receiver David Nelson had three catches for 90 yards and receiver Louis Murphy also caught seven passes for 79 yards. Leak was 17- of- 31 for 145 yards with no touchdowns and a pick. Tailback Markus Manson led all rushers with 96 yards on 10 carries.

Florida had two verbal commitments this past weekend: Aaron Hernandez (6-4, 235), a tight end from Bristol, Conn., has committed to the Gators. Sidell Corley (6-4, 255), a defensive end from Mobile, Ala., also committed to Florida during the spring game. He had over 45 offers.

The Gators have won 14 straight SEC All-Sports titles. They are 1.5 points ahead of Georgia with three sports (softball, baseball and track) remaining. Florida leads with 117 points and Georgia is second with 115.5. Redshirt senior safety Terrence Holmes has decided to give up football. Left tackle Jason Watkins, John Curtis, receiver Louis Murphy will all have scopes soon and will be back in four to six week.

ARKANSAS: Texas and Arkansas might be on the verge of announcing a home- and- home series for the 2008-09 seasons. Coach Houston Nutt said in the post-spring teleconference that he was pleased with depth on the offensive and defensive lines.

OLE MISS: Coach Ed Orgeron said in the post-spring teleconference that he was pleased with the development of the offensive line and the play of defensive lineman Peria Jerry. He praised the addition of former Miami assistants Dan Werner and Art Kehoe to his staff.

On May 4-5, Northwest Community College hosts its first annual “Taking It to the Next Level” Football Showcase. After a catfish fry on May 4, Orgeron will introduce his coaching staff and discuss the 4-3 defense. Several coaches are expected to speak at the event such as Tommy West of Memphis, Phil Fulmer of Tennessee, Art Briles of Houston, Sly Croom of State, and Tommy Tuberville of Auburn. Quarterback signee Brent Schaeffer has all A’s in his classes expect one and that is a high B. Schaeffer started three games in 2004 for Tennessee before becoming involved in a quarterback shuffle and sustaining a regular season ending injury. He is now 6-2, 190 and runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash.

AUBURN: Tiger quarterback signee Neil Caudle had surgery to correct a thumb ligament tear that he had in a baseball game. He should be fine by June. Caudle has had two surgeries already for ACL tears. In his post-spring teleconference, Tuberville expressed concern over playing Washington State, Florida, Alabama, LSU and Georgia. The biggest move of the spring for the defense was moving Will Herring from safety to linebacker. Auburn has the highest paid staff in the nation with a total budget of $4,983,831. Texas was next with a total of 4,887, 932. Tennessee, Texas A & M and LSU were the rest of the top five.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Croom said in the post-spring teleconference that his team had its most productive spring in his three years. He said moving Omarr Conner from quarterback to receiver was a good move. Croom praised the play of quarterback Mike Henig. Middle linebacker Quinton Culberson continues to emerge.

LSU: Tiger receiver Xavier Carter ran a 10.12 in the 100-meter dash Saturday, the fifth fastest time in the world this season in last Saturday’s LSU Alumni Gold Invitational. He broke the 17-year old school record of 10.15. Coach Les Miles said in the post-spring teleconference that he welcomes the quarterback competition generated from Matt Flynn, Ryan Perrilloux and JaMarcus Russell.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Steve Spurrier said this week that work begins in May to improve the players’ dorms. Some of the improvements will be replacing the carpet and furniture that is 25-30 years old. Tailback Cory Boyd is accused of breaking a window with his fist at The Coop near Williams-Brice Stadium. Charges will probably not be pressed, but Boyd will be asked to reimburse damages to the window. Boyd was suspended all of last season due to a non-academic violation of team rules.

There are only nine seniors on the South Carolina roster. In comparison, Georgia has 19 seniors with 15 being redshirt seniors, Tennessee has 10 redshirt seniors and seven redshirt seniors, Florida has 23 seniors and 16 redshirt seniors, Auburn has 22 seniors and 15 redshirt seniors. Out of 22 signees from the 2002 class, only two are still on the team. South Carolina signed 28 players in 2003, 15 of those are no longer on the team.

GEORGIA: Coach Mark Richt said in the post spring teleconference that Joe Tereshinski was the starting quarterback coming out of spring. He is hoping that he will be able to narrow the four candidates down to two by August 20. Richt said moving Mikey Henderson from defensive back to receiver was successful. Fullback signee Shaun Chapas is rehabbing his knee after ACL surgery. He is planning on being in Athens in early June.

KENTUCKY: Coach Rich Brooks said Randy Sanders, the former Tennessee offensive coordinator, is preparing to take over as offensive coordinator. Running back Rafael Little missed part of spring with a broken wrist.

ALABAMA: Coach Mike Shula said this week in the post-spring teleconference that he was concerned about replacing quarterback Brodie Croyle and seven starters on defense. Alabama has plenty of questions as safety and at linebacker. It looks like Terrence Jones is going to replace DeMeco Ryans and either Matt Collins or Prince Hall will replace Freddie Roach. Replacing safeties Roman Harper and Charlie Peprah are Jeffery Dukes and Marcus Carter. Receiver signee Mike McCoy, who is from Brandon (Ms.) Northwest Rankin High, is mourning the death of his coach Michael Crouther, who died in a car accident in Tupelo on Feb. 20. McCoy, who is a track star, has run a 10.7 in the 100-yard dash.

TENNESSEE: Fulmer said in the post-spring teleconference that the Vols have to replace six of the front seven on defense. He had praise for the job that offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe did with his quarterback Erik Ainge. The strength of the defense is the secondary with four returning starters. Cornerbacks Jonathan Wade and Inky Johnson combined for 62 tackles and 10 pass break-ups last season. Wade was named the most improved defensive player. Roshaun Fellows is the third corner in case of an injury. Behind Fellows is either Antonio Gaines or Marsalous Johnson.

CLEMSON: Running back signee C J Spiller has not lost a race this season in track. At the Regional 2-2A meet, the Union County senior won the 100 and 200-meter dash with times of 10.46 and 21.56. He started the year in the 10.8 range and has lowered his time to 10.4.

BOSTON COLLEGE: Quarterback Matt Ryan was 37- of- 53 for 289 yards as he threw for one score and ran for one touchdown in last Saturday’s spring game. Running back L V Whitworth scored on a 69-yard run. The White beat the Maroon, 27-17. Sophomore Chris Crane was 9- of- 13 for 124 yards and two first quarter touchdowns. Junior strong safety Jamie Silva had six tackles, two pass breakups and two picks and forced one fumble. Sophomore defensive back Paul Anderson also had two picks on the day. Senior safety Ryan Glasper was awarded the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship. McGillis was a defensive back that died in 1992.

GEORGIA TECH: In Saturday’s spring game, quarterback Reggie Ball threw a 29-yard scoring pass to receiver Calvin Johnson. Afterwards, he and most of the starters went to the bench. Backup quarterback Taylor Bennett was 19- of- 25 for 115 yards and five touchdowns. Tight end Colin Peek, formerly of The Bolles School, has made a big jump during spring practice. Peek is pushing starter senior George Cooper and senior Michael Matthews for playing time. Peek is listed second on the depth chart.

FLORIDA STATE: FSU might be in a numbers crunch in terms of recruiting. They have 58 players on scholarship with 25 more expected this summer for a total of 83. Safety Kenny Ingram is at Tallahassee Community College trying to improve his academics. FSU signed 30 players in the latest recruiting class. Some of them might not be awarded a scholarship. Last year, five members of the signing class did not qualify leaving several scholarships to go around. With only seven seniors on the roster, next year’s signing class will be between 10-15. ESPN’s full circle coverage might be added to the FSU-Miami game in September. The format was used for the Duke-North Carolina game. Some of the FSU testing results is in. Tailback Antone Smith ran a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash and bench-pressed 430 pounds.

MIAMI: Backup quarterback Kirby Freeman announced that he would not transfer. Coach Larry Coker said he might put in a package just for Freeman. Defensive lineman Teraz McCray had a minor tear in his knee scoped this week. Offensive coordinator Rich Olson hinted that Charlie Jones might start ahead of Tyrone Moss, who has been recovering from a knee injury. Moss, who was 235 pounds, is now 220. Andrew Johnson and Derron Thomas have worked a lot behind Jones this spring. There is real concern at fullback because starter Jerrell Mabry is grossly overweight. There are no scholarship players behind him since James Bryant moved to linebacker and Quad Hill graduated. Offensive lineman John Rochford moved to fullback but a leg injury ended his season. A focus for the spring with the quarterbacks was getting them to throw to spots instead of where the receiver was, even if the receiver wasn’t running the correct route. New offensive coordinator Rich Olson said Kyle Wright was the best college quarterback that he has been around athletically.

UCF: The Golden Knights are trying to schedule Texas for the opening game in their new on-campus facility in 2007. In return, UCF plays two games at Texas later this decade. In 2007, UCF plays Florida, Middle Tennessee and Lousiana-Lafeyette. UCF could buy out a game at Tennessee and the USF series is in doubt. Orange Bowl CEO Keith Tribble will be named the new athletic director replacing Steve Orsini, who took the same position at SMU.

NOTRE DAME: Heralded quarterback recruit Jimmy Clausen (6-4, 190), who is from Woodland Village, Calif., chose the Irish as his verbal commitment

NCAA: The NCAA board of directors approved a proposal Thursday to allow teams with 6-6 records to be bowl eligible. The NCAA also wants to shorten games. They have passed measures to lower the kicking tee that would produce more returns. The clock would be started when the ball is kicked off rather than received. On change of possessions, the clock will start when the ball is spotted rather than on the first snap by the offense.

PLUS- ONE MODEL: The Atlanta Journal Constitution polled 10 university presidents and all by Miami’s Donna Shalala said they would consider a “plus- one” model where the national title game would be held a week after the BCS bowls were played. Southern Miss president Shelby Thames said he or she would be interested in a format that would equal the promotion college basketball gets from March Madness. Florida president Bernie Machen is in favor of a plus-one model. FSU president T K Wetherell said he would rather have an eight-team playoff system, but the “plus-one” would be a first step. The biggest obstacle toward the plus one plan could be the Rose Bowl and its relationship with the Big Ten and Pac-10.

KEITH JACKSON: The 77-year-old Jackson has announced his retirement even though ESPN offered him a pot of money.
