SEC MEDIA DAYS: The SEC distributed $116 million to its 12 schools for the 2005-06 year. Football television revenue accounted for $47 million, $20 million from bowls, $13 million from the SEC title game, $12 million from basketball TV, $4 million from the SEC men’s basketball tournament and $18 million from participation in the NCAA Tournament.
ALABAMA –MISSISSIPPI ALL-STAR GAME: Alabama won the game, 24-3, as their defense turned three turnovers into points. Mississippi outgained Alabama 214-93 yards, but the turnovers made the difference. Quarterback Chris Smelley (South Carolina) hit receiver Terrell Zachery (Auburn) on a 12-yard scoring pass for the Alabama team’s first score. Running back Arnil Stallworth (Mississippi State) scored on a short touchdown run to increase the lead to 17-3. On the next offensive play, defensive lineman Jerrell Nobles (junior college) stripped Anthony Dixon (Mississippi State) of the ball and Captain Munnerlyn (South Carolina) scooped it up and scored.
OLE MISS: Ed Orgeron said quarterback signee Brent Schaeffer will be on campus for the second session of summer school starting June 29. Schaeffer is waiting to graduate on June 29. Oregon also said running back signee Terry Levy, linebacker Rory Johnson and lineman Aubrey McPhadden also might not be eligible. The Rebels home opener Sept. 2 against Memphis might be moved to Sunday, Sept. 3 for ESPN television.
ALABAMA: Tide running back Glen Coffee had surgery last week in Philadelphia for a sports hernia. This is the same surgery that Alabama starting tailback Ken Darby had last spring. Sophomore linebacker Chris Keys and sophomore defensive back Travis Robinson are no longer on the team. Jamar Taylor (5-9, 204), a running back from Lakeland High, verbally committed to Alabama.
AUBURN: Coach Tommy Tuberville is considering moving Tuesday and Thursday practices during the season to morning in order to avoid class conflicts. Kentucky changed all their practices last year to morning to escape the heat and academic problems. Tiger linebacker Trey Blackmon was arrested on alcohol-related charges in his hometown of LaGrange, Ga., May 13. Tuberville said he just learned of the arrest this week. He added that Blackmon, who is challenging for a starting spot, would be disciplined. Johnnie Lee Dixon (5-11,176) a defensive back from Belle Glades Glades Central High, committed this week.
TENNESSEE: Vol backup quarterback Jim Bob Cooter was arrested over the weekend for a drunken-driving charge. Although it was Cooter’s first ever offense, he has been suspended for the opener against Cal.
BIRMINGHAM NEWS 60TH ANNUAL PREDICTION: The Alabama newspaper in a vote of SEC Sports Information Directors selected Auburn and LSU (tie) to win the Western Division and Florida to win the Eastern Division.
GEORGIA: Coach Mark Richt said he has submitted a list of facility improvements to the board of trustees that includes new training and weight rooms, bigger coaches meeting rooms and recruiting areas that have a dining hall. Signee Darius Dewberry (6-3, 211), a linebacker from Hargrave Military, has been accepted by the school and is awaiting word from the NCAA Clearinghouse.
FLORIDA: Reggie Nelson could be the first defensive back in Gator history to have 10 combined sacks and interceptions. It has never been done before. In 2003, cornerback Keiwan Ratliffe had a school-record nine picks, but no sacks. Coach Urban Meyer said he hopes some members of the football team will also be able to run track because the track- and- field coaches have been such an aid in recruiting. Stephen Garcia (6-3, 212), the dual-threat quarterback from Tampa Jefferson, said Florida and South Carolina are his two leaders, but he is also looking at Ole Miss, Louisville, N C State and Auburn. Columbus, Ga., Hardaway High offensive lineman Antwan Greenlee (6-6, 300), a FSU commitment, recently visited Florida. He said the Gators are strongly recruiting him.
MORE GATOR COMMITMENTS: LaShawn (6-4, 287) and James Pouncey (6-4, 280), twin linemen from Lakeland High, committed to Florida. Their teammate defensive back Ahmad Black (5-11, 170) also committed. Running back Chris Rainey, also from Lakeland, was a May commitment. Gator signee Jarred Fayson will also be featured in the Summer House special on ESPN2 and ESPNU in July. It is the story of six signees living together in a house in Chicago before they go to their perspective fall camps.
ARKANSAS: There are rumors that some coaches on the Arkansas staff are openly questioning the credentials of offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who comes from Springdale High School along with his prized quarterback Mitch Mustain. The new Hog quarterback coach is Alex Wood, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals.
SOUTH CAROLINA: Brian Maddox (6-0, 215), a running back from T. L. Hanna High in Anderson, S. C., committed to the Gamecocks. FSU, Florida, Auburn, Clemson, LSU and a host of others have offered him. Maddox said USC running back coach Robert Gillespie, formerly of Florida, was made a significant impact on him. South Carolina is trying to work out a series with N C State for 2008- and- 09. The last time the two teams have played was in 1999. They already have a series with North Carolina beginning in 2007.

FLORIDA STATE: Freshman cornerback Michael Ray Garvin has been a major plus for the FSU track team. He has qualified for the NCAA Championship meet this week in the 200 meters. He also runs a leg on the 4 X 100 track team that is ranked second in the nation. Nole receiver Kenny O’Neal is not running track. Instead, he is concentrating on academics.
Nole offensive lineman Cory Niblock (6-5, 308) is back on the field after tearing his ACL in the Clemson game. He said his knee is 75% of what he wants it to be. He is moving back to guard after playing tackle last year. Receiver signee Brent Brewer has signed with the Milwaukee Brewers and will not play football for Florida State. He was the 60th overall pick in the first round. He reports to the Brewers on Monday.
MIAMI: Chris Perry (6-3, 320), a lineman from Keller, Texas, has committed to the Canes. He was talking on the phone to a Notre Dame recruiting analyst and let it slip that he was going to Miami. As soon as the conversation ended, he called the Cane coaching staff and committed. His idol growing up was Warren Sapp. Florida. Damien Berry (5-11, 197), a defensive back from Belle Glades Glades Central also committed to the Canes. He chose Miami over Florida, but he said that he would take his visits. Daniel Stegall, the only quarterback signee in the last year’s recruiting class, decided play minor league baseball instead of college football after he was drafted in the seventh round by the New York Mets. Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman will be the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
MARYLAND: Signee Melvin Alaeze (6-2, 290) needs a qualifying score on his SAT in order to play this season. He was at Hargrave Military Academy, but got frustrated and went back home. Maryland resigned him. Former FSU signee Callahan Bright is in similar shape needing his test score. FSU stopped recruiting Bright and he didn’t sign with anyone last February. At one point at Hargrave, the defensive line consisted of Alaeze, Bright, FSU signee Justin Mincey and Ole Miss signee Jerrell Powe.
BOSTON COLLEGE: Rivals.com is doing a feature on what happened to former players. One of the latest is on former BC kicker David Gordon, 33, who now lives in Chicago. He kicked the winning field goal to beat Notre Dame and allow FSU to face Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. He lived in Jacksonville for four years and went to training camp with the Jaguars, but failed to make the team. He went to NFL camps the next two years without making a roster. Gordon and his family worked in Jacksonville for a few years before returning to work with his family.
