FLORIDA: G. J. Kinne (6-2, 207), a quarterback from Gilmer, Texas has decided to play at Baylor instead of Florida. He cited the chance to play immediately as being very important. The Gators are hosting “Friday Night Lights” this weekend that will include many top prospects including Chris Culliver (6-0, 180), a safety from Garner NC, who originally committed to NC State and Major Wright (6-1, 200), a safety from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Saint Thomas Aquinas. He has already visited Notre Dame, FSU and Miami.
SOUTH CAROLINA: Offensive lineman Clarence Bailey, a junior college signee, will probably not qualify according to coach Steve Spurrier.
Cornerback Fred Bennett, a three-year starter, is one of the reps at SEC Media Days. Spurrier bypassed receiver Sidney Rice and quarterback Blake Mitchell to take sophomore running back Mike Davis as the other rep. Spurrier said he deserved the spotlight due to his work ethic.
Gamecock signee Emanuel Cook, a running back from Palm Beach Gardens High, will begin as a freshman on defense.
ALABAMA: Coach Mike Shula faces his fourth visit to SEC Media Days next week where he will be asked about receiver Tyrone Prothro’s health, receiver D J Hall status (personal business kept him at home this summer) and an update on linebacker Juwan Simpson concerning gun permit and stolen property charges.
Several Tide freshmen are expected to get playing time this season such as quarterback Greg McElroy, offensive lineman Andre Smith, kick returner Javier Arenas, receiver Mike McCoy and safety Justin Woodall.
ARKANSAS: Last season the Hogs played 12- of- 20 signees. This year, at least 10 could see actions such as quarterback Mitch Mustain, several receivers such as Damian Williams, Andrew Norman, London Crawford, Marques Wade, Carlton Salters and Dee Williams and tight end Ben Cleveland.
AUBURN: Brent Slusher (6-3, 221), a tight end from Pineville (Ky.) Bell County, committed to the Tigers. He was also looking at Tennessee, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati and Marshall. Eltoro Freeman (5-11, 200), a linebacker from Benjamin Russell (Ala.) High, has also committed to Auburn. He is also looking at Clemson, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Louisville. Marshall Williams (6-2, 198), an outside linebacker from Decatur, Ga., is verbal commitment No. 11 for the Tigers.
Coach Tommy Tuberville said he is not concerned about the academic fraud allegations. He is confident that the investigation will be quick and the NCAA will not become involved. Auburn professor James Gundlach charged another professor Thomas Petee with giving football players special treatment.
Also, Tuberville said freshman receiver Tim Hawthorne could have an impact.
Auburn cornerback Montae Pitts is transferring to another school, possibly I-AA Jacksonville State. He was arrested earlier this season on drunken driving charges.
TENNESSEE: The Cal offensive line, the Vol’s first opponent, is progressing into a strength with the return of tackle Mike Tepper returning from a leg injury, Duke transfer Tyler Kreig at guard and tackle Andrew Cameron returning from multiple injuries that he struggled with last season.
Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe said he is pleased with the work ethic of the offense this summer. He also said he is satisfied that the team is leaner. He also noted the leadership of quarterback Erik Ainge.
Vol officials have replaced Central Florida with Louisiana-Lafayette on the 2007 schedule. Tennessee has an open date before the Georgia game on Oct. 6. UCF paid Tennessee $10,000 to cancel the game. Next year, Tennessee opens at Cal before hosting Southern Miss and traveling to Florida. In 1998, they open at UCLA, are slated for on open date before hosting Florida.
OLE MISS: Quarterback Seth Adams is preparing to start against Memphis just in case junior college quarterback signee Brent Schaeffer is not on board. There are still rumors that Shaeffer will not qualify this season. Coach Ed Orgeron said Schaeffer has returned to California to finish course work at the College of the Sequoias. He might not be with the team when camp starts in August, but Orgeron said he will be with the team when he finishes. Schaeffer must graduate before he can enroll at Ole Miss.
Rebel Receiver J D Lawhorn has left the team. He redshirted last year. Linebacker Patrick Willis’ youngest brother Detris drowned Monday near his hometown of Bruceton, Tenn.
LSU: Kentravis Aubrey (6-3, 285), a defensive tackle from Bastrop, has committed to LSU.
GEORGIA: Logan Gray (6-2, 180), an Elite 11 quarterback from Missouri, chose Georgia over Missouri, Florida and Auburn.
SEC COACHES ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: Auburn led with 14 players (seven first team selections). Georgia (five first team selections), Arkansas (three first team selections) and LSU (two first team selections) had 12. Florida had 10 (three first team selections-quarterback Chris Leak, linebacker Brandon Siler and defensive back Reggie Nelson). Kentucky had seven, Alabama six and Tennessee five.
FLORIDA STATE: Kendall Smith (6-1, 207), a linebacker from Bushnell South Sumter (Fla.) High, has committed to the Noles. Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa State, UCF and USF have offered him. He still wants to visit several schools to see what it is like outside the state of Florida. Torrey Davis (6-5, 290), a five-star defensive lineman from Armwood (Fla.) High, has committed to the Noles. He is the top- ranked player in the state.
FSU quarterback Xavier Lee said repeated that he is not transferring to another school. He said his injured right shoulder is close to 100%.
Nole receiver De’Cody Fagg has lost 10 pounds and now weighs 214. He also said his shoulder is healthy and he is able to work out normally.
FSU freshman signee Daron Rose (6-5, 310) said he is adjusting to college life. He believes that the foundation he received from former NFL linemen that he knows will help him in his first year.
Nole strongside linebacker Lawrence Timmons has been impressive in offseason workouts. He has two sacks in the ACC Title game and won the dominating player award this spring on defense. Simmons has increased his vertical leap four inches, his weight 14 pounds, his clean from 260- to- 340, his squat from 475- to- 565 and his bench from 350- to- 420. This is a young linebacker group with sophomores Jae Thaxton, Derek Nicholson, Geno Hayes and Toddrick Verdell along with senior Buster Davis.
The defense has only two senior starters-linebacker Buster Davis and defensive end Darrell Burston. Junior tackle Andre Fluellen is the only player on the defensive line with significant experience.
MIAMI: Linebacker Willie Williams is not transferring to West Virginia or Tennessee. Mountaineer officials said they were not interested. Williams might stay at Miami simply because he has nowhere else to go.
Cane freshman receiver signee Sam Shields is getting rave reviews in 7- on- 7 drills from linebacker Tavares Gooden. Shields has also gotten word from the NCAA Clearinghouse that he has been certified. He has now been accepted by the admissions department.
The Miami linebacker unit is expected to be Gooden at strongside, Jon Beason at weakside and either Glenn Cook or Darryl Sharpton in the middle.
Miami athletic director Paul Dee said the Canes won’t play on Labor Day next season because they play Oklahoma the following week.
GEORGIA TECH: Jacoby Monroe (6-2, 270), a defensive end from Sandalwood (Fla.) High, has committed to Tech. FSU, Florida, Miami, Tennessee and South Carolina have offered him. He is a member of the Rivals100.
CLEMSON: Marcus Gilchrist (5-11, 175), a Rivals100 defensive back, committed to Clemson on Thursday. Florida, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and many others had offered him.
PENN STATE: Offensive coordinator Galen Hall received tips from the Texas staff last year in using quarterback Michael Robinson in the spread offense. This year, he has met with the Indianapolis Colts staff about utilizing the less mobile first-year starter Anthony Morelli.
ELITE 11 QUARTERBACK CAMP NEXT WEEK: The participants are: Rontrell Bailey from Arkansas (Ole Miss, Texas A & M and Oklahoma State); John Brantley from Ocala, Fla., (Texas), Aaron Corp from California (USC), Stephen Garcia from Tampa, Fla., (South Carolina, Florida, N C State, Louisville and Ole Miss); Gray from Missouri (Georgia), Willy Korn from Duncan, S C (Clemson); Peter Lalich from Virginia (Virginia); Jarrett Lee from Texas (LSU); Tyrod Taylor from Virginia (leaning toward VT); Brock Mansion from Dallas, Texas (Cal); Ryan Mallett from Texas (Michigan); Keith Nichol from Michigan (Michigan State).
NFL NETWORK: The network will carry three bowl games this season. The latest is the yet-to-be named Dec. 28 bowl game at Reliant Stadium matching teams from the Big 12 and Big East.
