For the 14th time since the SEC expanded in 1992, the league has four schools in the AP top ten with No. 2 Auburn, No. 5 Florida, No. 9 LSU and No. 10 Georgia.
TENNESSEE AT GEORGIA: The Vols held Memphis to only 121 yards of total offense. Tennessee gained 566 yards of offense. Vol quarterback Erik Ainge was 23- of- 27 for 324 yards and four touchdowns in the win over Memphis. Tailback LaMarcus Coker ran 26 times for 125 yards. Receiver Robert Meachem caught four passes for 157 yards.
Last year, Tennessee scored 21 touchdowns all season. This year in five games, the Vols already have 20 touchdowns. Receiver Jayson Swain and Meachem led the nation with 955 yards combined and 10 scores. The Vols rushed for 205 yards, the most since the Cal opener. Coach Phil Fulmer hopes to have tailback Arian Foster back from an ankle injury. Center Josh McNeil got his first start. Linebacker Marvin Mitchell is leading the SEC in tackles with 10 per game. Ainge has thrown an interception in every game except Memphis. Tennessee has not scored more than 19 points against Georgia in the last four meetings. Senior offensive tackle Arron Sears has not practiced the past two days due to an ankle and elbow sprain.
GEORGIA: Tailback Kregg Lumpkin ran for 101 yards on 13 carries in the win over Ole Miss. Linebacker Tony Taylor had 10 tackles in the game. Quarterback Joe Cox started the Ole Miss game, but struggled and was replaced by Matthew Stafford, who played the entire second half. Stafford on the year is 36- of- 75 for 485 yards with a touchdown and three picks. The Bulldogs are great road team. Under Mark Richt, the Bulldogs are 21-2 in five years away from Sanford Stadium.
Despite the lofty road record, Georgia continues to struggle offensively. Georgia is No. 90 in national passing stats. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the Ole Miss game was that the Rebel defensive line pushed around the Bulldog offensive line even with a 50-pound weight advantage. Joe Tereshinski, the starting quarterback at the beginning of the season, is starting Saturday night. He allows Richt to use the entire playbook. If Joe T III, who is recovered from an ankle (his plant foot) injury, plays then Stafford would be the No. 2 quarterback. Georgia has beaten Tennessee four of the last five meetings. Richt is not happy with the offensive line and the receivers, who dropped four passes against Colorado and five against Ole Miss. In the past two weeks, Colorado and Ole Miss, the No. 55 and No. 82 defenses, have scored 28 combined points. Georgia has 22 drives and scored four times in those games. With a win, the Bulldogs are likely to go unbeaten until the Florida game. The defense leads the nation in points allowed (6.8 ppg). Senior offensive tackle Michael Turner returns to action after injuring his ankle in the South Carolina game. He brings some depth along with Daniel Inman and Ken Shackleford. Sophomore safety defensive back Antonio Sims has left school after having trouble with a parking pass and being charged with a DUI last fall. The coaches are happy with the play of freshman corner Asher Allen and Prince Miller. Receiver Mohamed Massaquoi has only five catches in five games. He is now the No. 1 option at receiver. Middle linebacker Jarvis Jackson has been struggling with a foot injury. Danny Verdun Wheeler has been playing in his stead. Starting kicker Brandon Coutu is out for the season after injuring himself in onside kick drills Thursday. Andy Bailey will replace him.
LSU AT FLORIDA: Quarterback JaMarcus Russell was 18- of- 20 for 330 yards (first time in his career he went over 300 yards) and three scores in the win over Mississippi State. Receiver Craig Davis caught six passes for 101 yards. Defensive back Craig Steltz picked off a pass in his fourth straight game. Mississippi State was behind three scores before they made a first down. The Bulldogs were trailing, 35-0, before they ran a play in LSU territory. The only negative from Saturday’s game is that the Tigers continue to struggle to run the ball. They had only 18 yards on nine attempts in the first half against Mississippi State. Russell’s 300 yards plus passing performance moved him into fifth place in career passing yardage passing Rohan Davey and Alan Risher.
LSU won the last visit to Swamp when Marcus Randall led a comeback that LSU won in the final seconds. It was Russell’s first start. Russell is now 18-3 as a starting quarterback. He has ten touchdowns and only one pick along with 70% passing. Left guard Will Arnold left the game with an knee injury. He had his knee scoped and is out for eight to ten days. Herman Johnson replaces Arnold. Freshman Charles Scott started at tailback, but gained only 27 yards on 11 attempts. Scott and tight end Richard Dickson started as freshman, the first time that had happened since 2001. The Tiger defense has 19 sacks, 33 tackles for loss and nine picks. Cornerback Jonathan Zenon and Craig Steltz have eight picks combined. Opposing quarterbacks throw away from safety LaRon Landry. Ends Tyson Jackson and Chase Pittman have combined for 11 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Since the second game of 2005, only two quarterbacks Auburn’s Brandon Cox and Mississippi State’s Omarr Conner have thrown for over 200 yards on the Tiger defense. Since he has been at LSU Miles’ teams have faced 19 ranked foes, four of those in the top ten.
FLORIDA: Gator defensive back Reggie Nelson returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown in the win over Alabama. Nelson, who had five tackles, recovered cornerback Ryan Smith’s fumble after he intercepted the ball. Florida has struggled to score points in the first half during several games this season. DeShawn Wynn’s knee injury could derail the running attack and put even more emphasis on Leak’s passing. If Leak can’t play then Kestahn Moore will start and Markus Manson and Brandon James will back him up. Percy Harvin will play despite his high ankle sprain. Defensive back Tony Joiner had 10 tackles in the Alabama game. Quarterback Chris Leak was 14- of- 20 for 174 yards and two scores.
The Gators are the only SEC team without a field goal. Receiver Bubba Caldwell is regaining his old form. The offensive line played better in the second half. Phil Trautwein is dominant on the left side. Carlton Medder has had two straight games where he has had a false start penalty. The offense gained 197 yards passing and 133 rushing. Leak threw no picks and completed passes to six different receivers. Defensively, Jarvis Moss and Derrick Harvey combined for 2.5 sacks and four quarterback hurries. Javier Estopinan earned a start and played okay. Brandon Siler, Earl Everett and Brian Crum combined for 16 tackles. The defense allowed Alabama 70 plays and 20 first downs. In the past two LSU games, Leak is 26- of- 63 for 249 yards but he has never thrown a pick against LSU. Florida is minus two in turnover margin in five games. Florida has not recovered a fumble this year. Offensive lineman Ronnie Wilson will see playing time on Saturday. Defensive tackle Marcus Thomas will play against LSU after having his suspension lifted.
ARKANSAS AT AUBURN: The Hogs did not play last Saturday. The key matchup here is Auburn’s front seven against Hog tailback Darren McFadden. Arkansas is last in the nation in turnover margin giving up seven picks and only one takeaway. Tailback Peyton Hillis has been hampered with a thigh bruise since the Vanderbilt game, but he should play Saturday. The Razorback offensive line, with three seniors, averages 6-foot-5, 315 pounds. Defensive tackle Marcus Harrison, who had his knee scoped recently, might play a few snaps. Receiver Marcus Monk is back from a bruised shoulder.
AUBURN: The Tigers controlled the ball the entire third quarter in the win over South Carolina. Tailback Kenny Irons ran 27 times for 117 yards and scored twice. Defensive back David Irons had 10 tackles. Auburn can’t afford to be looking ahead to Florida. The Tigers have won 20 of 21 games the best run in Tiger history. Cox was 13- of- 19 for 180 yards and a touchdown in the win over South Carolina.
Coach Tommy Tuberville has a big concern with center Joe Cope out four to six weeks due to the sprained knee he sustained against South Carolina. Jason Bosley, a sophomore, who has little experience, replaces him. Tuberville said Bosley has had a good week of practice. USC gained 24 first downs, 349 total yards and converted 6- of- 13 times on third down. Patrick Lee and Eric Brock broke up a pass in the end zone intended for Sidney Rice. Auburn has allowed only 20 points in three SEC games. Auburn hasn’t seen a running game like Arkansas. The Tigers were hurt last week by a short, quick passing game by a veteran quarterback like Syvelle Newton. Defensive end Marquies Gunn is back full strength after dealing with an injured hamstring. He has stepped up the pace with 13 tackles in the last three games. Senior Chris Browder did a good job in his stead. Linebacker Will Herring has led the team in production points in the first five games. The Tiger defense has 17 sacks.
WEST VIRGINIA AT MISSISSIPPI STATE: Free safety Jeramie Johnson had 11 tackles and force one fumble in the loss to LSU. Receiver Tony Burks caught four passes for 103 yards in the game. Quarterback Omarr Conner was 15- of- 28 for 212 yards and one touchdown. State is allowing only 104 ypg rushing. WVU is No. 93 in passing. The WVU defense has yet to sack the quarterback. Defensive tackle Deljuan Robinson had his knee scoped and will miss three weeks. State is No. 100 or worse in seven categories: rushing, passing defense, sacks allowed, scoring, total offense, passing efficiency and passing efficiency defense.
SOUTH CAROLINA AT KENTUCKY: Newton was 21- of- 35 for 240 yards and two scores in the loss to Auburn. Receiver Kenny McKinley caught eight passes for 110 yards and one score. The Gamecocks won the stats battle against Auburn. They had more yards, more first down and even more offensive plays. McKinley, the leading receiver in the Auburn game, should be ready to play after sustaining a bruised shoulder against the Tigers. Reserve defensive end Kerry Bonds has been dismissed from the team for allegedly choking a female in the dorm. Steve Spurrier is 13-0 against Kentucky, winning by an average score of 47-17. FSU, Kentucky and USC are believed to have the fewest recruited senior scholarship players in the nation with six each.
KENTUCKY: The Wildcats are 3-0 at home this season. Wildcat linebacker Wesley Woodyard had nine tackles and forced two fumbles in the win over Central Michigan.
Quarterback Andre Woodson was 20- of- 32 for 266 yards with four touchdowns and one pick in the game. Woodson has 14 touchdowns and only two picks this year. Receiver Keenan Burton caught nine passes for 124 yards and two scores. The Wildcat defense allowed 558 yards against CMU. Kentucky has the second worst defense in the nation. The defensive line will be even thinner this week if defensive tackle Ricky Abren (wrist injury) and key reserve ends Corey Peters and Jamil Paris can’t play. Center Matt McCutchan has an ankle injury. Still, the Wildcat defense has allowed 14 takeaways this season. Tailback Rafael Little should be back.
DUKE AT ALABAMA: Tailback Ken Darby gained 105 all-purpose yards in the loss to Florida. Receiver D J Hall caught six passes for 117 yards. Tide linebacker Prince Hall picked up a Chris Leak fumble and returned it 50 yards for a score. Quarterback John Parker Wilson was 21- of- 40 for 240 yards and three interceptions. It was his fifth career start and second road trip. Receiver Keith Brown caught only four passes for 36 yards. The Tide offense needs to score touchdowns against Duke. Alabama has lost to games that it could have won due to their inability to score touchdowns.
Since the Florida game a year ago, Alabama has managed to score 20 points only four times in 12 games. When trailing in the four quarter, Coach Mike Shula’s teams are 0-15. Alabama has been in the Red Zone 23 times this season and scored only six touchdowns. The Tide has scored one offensive touchdown in three SEC games in regulation play. Alabama drove six times inside the Florida 40 yards and got only two field goals. Florida mixed up its coverage when Alabama was in the Red Zone going from blitz to three-deep zone. The Gator defense doubled Brown and Hall close to the goal line. The Tide defense is ranked No. 29 nationally allowing 17 ppg and 280 yards. Wilson is averaging 234 ypg passing and Duke’s pass defense is ranked No. 74. Hall and Brown have caught 47 passes this season. Duke has one touchdown and two field goals this season on offense. Running back Glen Coffee is making progress after a knee injury in August. Darby has admitted that his hip injury has bothered him more than he has said.
VANDERBILT AT OLE MISS: The Rebels actually played better in the first half against Georgia, but still could only manage nine points. One of the bright spots was the running of BenJarvus Green-Ellis who gained 135 yards on 24 carries. The Ole Miss defense held Georgia scoreless in the first half. Ole Miss is 1-9 in SEC games under Orgeron. Brent Schaeffer was 6- of- 16 for 87 yards and one pick. Ole Miss gained 243 yards on Georgia. They were down to their third team right tackle. The Rebel defense limited Georgia to only 248 total yards. The Rebels are on a four-game losing streak. Ole Miss is averaging eight points per game. Schaeffer has six picks and four touchdowns. Freshman defensive end Greg Hardy fell on campus Tuesday, but he should be fine. He has started the past three games. Defensive lineman Peria Jerry will likely miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.
VANDERBILT’S defense held Temple to 270 yards and forced three turnovers. Commodore running back Cassen Jackson-Garrison had 13 runs for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Temple. Safety Ben Koger is out with a broken leg and linebackers Kevin Joyce and Marcus Buggs are struggling with injuries from the Temple game.
MARYLAND AT GEORGIA TECH: The Yellow Jackets lead the Coastal Division with the win over the Hokies. Georgia Tech gained 167 yards on their first 12 plays and jumped to a 21-0 lead before 11 minutes had run off the clock. Tailback Tashard Choice ran for 105 yards on 18 carries in the win over Virginia Tech. Quarterback Reggie Ball was 9- of- 16 for 176 yards with two picks and two touchdowns. Receiver Calvin Johnson caught six passes for 115 yards. Georgia Tech held Virginia Tech to 42 yards rushing. Sean Glennon was 27- of- 53 for 339 yards. Choice, an OU transfer, is averaging 73 yards per game. Jon Tenuta will give Hollenbach much to consider. The Yellow Jacket offense has matured under Patrick Nix, who was given play- calling duties in the preseason.
MARYLAND: The Terps have had a week off to prepare. Glennon threw for 329 yards on the Yellow Jacket secondary so quarterback Sam Hollenbach could have similar results. Maryland is No. 88 nationally against the run.
VIRGINIA TECH IS OFF: The Hokies don’t play again until Thursday night Oct. 12 at
BC. Virginia Tech averaged only 1.6 yards per carry in the loss to the Yellow Jackets.
NORTH CAROLINA AT MIAMI: Javarrious James ran 18 times for 148 yards in the win over Houston. Quarterback Kyle Wright was 16- of- 27 for 190 yards and two picks. The Cane defense held Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb to 18- of- 28 passing for 196 yards. Houston rushed for only 80 yards. Safety Kenny Phillips has 11 tackles and punter Brian Monroe averaged 50 yards per punt. Miami had 10 penalties for 90 yards. Before the game, three different banners calling for the firing of Coach Larry Coker flew over the stadium. Perhaps, the turning point of the game was when Houston was in the red zone with a six-point lead but Miami safety Lovon Ponder hit Houston running back Jackie Battle causing a fumble that the Canes recovered. Freshman tight end Richard Gordon has switched to the defensive line. Tight end Greg Olsen had repeated drops in the Houston game. Kicker Jon Peattie has missed three straight field goals. Tailback Tyrone Moss did not play, but James and Charlie Jones did. Coker said Moss was not ready to play. One of the big plays of the game was Coker deciding to go for fourth and inches in his own territory. Miami got the first down.
NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels are No. 104 nationally in total defense allowing 402 ypg. Quarterback Joe Dailey and Cam Sexton are ranked No. 8 and No. 10 in the ACC in pass efficiency. Yet, the UNC offensive line with Charlston Gray and Brian Chacos could allow the Heels (123 ypg rushing) to control the ball on occasion. Miami allows only 65 ypg rushing.
BOSTON COLLEGE IS OFF THIS WEEK: The crowd was happy during the win over Maine that kicker Ryan Ohligher got off the snide. He kicked two field goals and most importantly an extra point.
CLEMSON AT WAKE FOREST: The Tigers are averaging 240 yards per game rushing.
In three home games, the offense has averaged 50 points and allowed opponents just 13 points. Clemson is averaging 43 points per game and allowing just 13. Tailback James Davis leads the ACC in rushing averaging 102 yards per game. Tiger receiver Chansi Stuckey broke his foot in practice and will miss five weeks. In five games he has 25 catches for 331 yards and three scores. He is the fourth major player to be injured this season joining linebacker Tremaine Billie, Anthony Waters and safety Michael Hamlin who is back this week. The Tigers had three backs gain over 100 yards last week-Davis, C J Spiller and Demerick Chancellor.
WAKE FOREST: The Demon Deacons have won the past two games at home against Clemson. Quarterback Riley Skinner is completing 65% of his passes and has yet to throw a pick. Wake is tied for first in the league with 17 sacks. Wake’s run defense is ranked No. 16, allowing 78 yards per game, but they have not encountered a team that can run like Clemson. They will have to move a safety up to help. Wake needs De’Angelo Bryant to chew up time of possession, but the Tiger rush defense allows only 69 ypg.
