Florida receiver Nyan Boateng said he is transferring to Cal. Receiver Andre Caldwell said he is returning for his senior season. Defensive back Reggie Nelson and linebacker Brandon Siler both said they are leaving for the NFL. Defensive end Jarvis Moss and defensive back Ryan Smith have already announced their intentions to go pro. Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong is believed to have been the runner-up to Tim Brewster for the Minnesota after TCU Coach Gary Patterson pulled his name out. Former Gator assistant Rod Broadway is the new coach at Grambling State replacing Melvin Spears.

Torrey Davis (6-5, 290), a five-star defensive tackle from Seffner (Fla.) Armwood, was an unofficial visitor to the celebration in the Swamp last Saturday. Davis will take his official visit to Florida this weekend Chris Culliver (6-0, 188 ), a Rivals100 defensive back from Garner, N. C., is down to South Carolina and Florida. He visited Florida this past weekend and will visit South Carolina soon. Both schools have told him that he will play receiver on the next level. Sidell Corley (6-4, 250), a four-star defensive end from Mobile (Ala.) McGill-Toolen, said his visit to Tennessee was good, but he is still committed to Florida. Corley will visit Florida and Alabama. James Wilson (6-4, 300), the five-star offensive lineman from Nease (Fla.) High, who was a Southern Cal commitment, has visited Wake Forest and Ohio State. He has changed his mind and committed to the Gators. Everson Griffen (6-4, 266), a five-star defensive end from Avondale, Arizona, visited Florida last weekend. Griffen is a Southern Cal commitment. He visits the Trojans on an unofficial trek this weekend. FSU commitment Ahmad Paige (6-3, 175), a receiver from Sterlington, La., is visiting Florida this weekend. He has a visit to Southern Cal next week. His teams are FSU, Florida, USC or Tennessee. Jason Peters (6-4, 250), a defensive end from Baton Rouge, La., is visiting this weekend. Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Notre Dame and LSU are also recruiting him. Carlos Dunlap (6-7, 265), a defensive end from North Charleston, S.C., is visiting Florida this weekend. He said it could be his last visit. Dunlap will chose between Florida and South Carolina.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has added Bo Davis, a defensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins last season, Ron Middleton, a former assistant for the Tampa Bay Bucs and Ole Miss Rebels, and Major Applewhite, the former Texas quarterback and former Rice offensive coordinator to his staff. Burton Burns, the running backs coach at Clemson has been added to the staff. Jeff Brohm, who has been promoted to passing game coordinator at Louisville, turned down an opportunity to be on the Tide staff.

Kerry Murphy (6-5, 315), a Rivals100 defensive tackle from Hoover, Ala., is Saban’s first verbal commitment. Auburn and Miami are also recruiting him. Allen Bailey (6-4, 255), a Rivals100 linebacker from Darien, Ga., visited Alabama this past weekend. He visits Miami next weekend and Georgia the following weekend. Robert Marve (6-1, 200), a quarterback from Plant High in Tampa, Fla., visited Alabama with his parents last weekend. Marve, who said he felt better about his previous Alabama commitment, is going to still visit Miami and Hawaii. Nick Fanuzzi (6-3, 190), a dual-threat three-star quarterback from Churchill High in San Antonio, Texas, is visiting Alabama this weekend. Fanuzzi, a Miami commitment, is frustrated because the Canes have yet to hire an offensive coordinator. He also has offers from Iowa State and Kentucky. Fanuzzi has some ties with Applewhite.

Auburn coaches entertained nearly 17 players last weekend. Lee Ziemba (6-7, 295), a four-star offensive lineman from Rogers, Ark., said he enjoyed his visit. Ziemba chose Auburn over Arkansas on Friday. Tiger commitment Eltoro Freeman (5-11, 199), a four-star linebacker from Benjamin (Ala.) Russell High, who committed earlier in the year to Auburn, cancelled his remaining visits. Michael McNeil (6-2, 200), a safety from Mobile (Ala.) Davidson, was very impressed with his visit to Auburn this past weekend. He is going to visit FSU on Jan. 19 and Alabama the following weekend. He has already visited Tennessee. McNeil said Auburn, FSU and Tennessee are all even. Junior defensive end Quentin Groves said he will return for his senior season. Tiger offensive line coach Hugh Nall said he is not interested in the Georgia Southern vacancy.

Georgia junior linebacker Brandon Miller said he is returning for his senior season. He had five starts last season. Antwanee Greenlee (6-6, 302), an offensive tackle from Columbus (Ga.) Hardaway, said he is still committed to Georgia despite have a good visit to Florida State last weekend. Several Georgia coaches visited Monday night. Greenlee said his grandmother made baked chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas, candied yams, corn bread and banana pudding. He said the coaches ate well after affirming his verbal commitment to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a visit scheduled this weekend from Orlando Franklin (6-6, 290), an offensive tackle from Delray (Fla.) Beach Atlantic. He visits Miami the last weekend of January. This past weekend Franklin visited Florida Atlantic. FSU coaches visited him this past Sunday night. Miguel Chavis (6-5, 255), a defensive lineman from Hargrave Military, is visiting Clemson this weekend. Georgia coaches visited him during the week. Although he is contemplating a trip to Michigan or Alabama, the Bulldogs and Tigers are his two favorite teams. Bulldog defensive coordinator Willie Martinez said he will not be a candidate for the Rice vacancy.

South Carolina has added a commitment from Akeem Auguste (5-11, 175), a four-star cornerback from Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna. He visited West Virginia, Pitt, and Wake Forest. Quarterback Stephen Garcia (6-2, 202), who is from Tampa, Fla., is enrolled in classes this week for the Gamecocks. Dion Lecorn (6-0, 193), a four-star receiver from Ocala (Fla.) Trinity Catholic, along with his teammate Antonio Allen (6-2, 180), a three-star safety, committed to South Carolina on Wednesday. Allen was deciding among South Carolina, Florida, Louisville, Ole Miss, Nebraska and N C State. Lecorn was looking at South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, South Florida and UCF.

Coach Steve Spurrier said he was not happy with the team’s fall grade point average of 2.35. Spurrier also announced that spring practice begins March 20 and the spring game is April 14.

Tennessee safety Demetrice Morley has been denied re-admission for the spring semester. He passed six hours in order to play in the bowl game, but his grade point average was not adequate. Morley, who started 11 games this past season, had 51 tackles including seven for loss. He could be replaced in the secondary by Antonio Wardlow, a sophomore. Seven Vols had surgery recently. Only two players-defensive end Robert Ayers (left shoulder) and defensive tackle Walter Fisher (left shoulder) -- will miss spring drills, which begin Feb. 22. Receiver Josh Briscoe had a hernia repaired. Linebacker Jerod Mayo (left knee), tailback Montario Hardesty (right knee), center Josh McNeil (left knee) and defensive end Xavier Mitchell (left shoulder) and offensive tackle Eric Young (shoulder) all had arthroscopic surgeries. William Brimfield (6-5, 287), a defensive tackle from Neeses, S. C., committed to Tennessee. Clemson, North Carolina and South Carolina have also offered him.

Mississippi State has added walk-on quarterback Kyle Auffray (6-6, 230), who is from New York, to their depth chart. He enrolled last week. Last year’s starter Mike Henig is recovering from a broken collarbone and backup Tray Rutland is recovering from an ACL tear in his knee.

LSU has commitment No. 22 from Ron Brooks (6-0, 170), a four-star athlete from Irving (Texas) MacArthur. Florida, Arkansas, Texas Tech and Texas A & M offered him. Coach Les Miles will have most of his own players next season. Toddrick Bajoie (6-2, 190), a receiver from Catholic-Pointe (La.) Coupee, will likely be placed in a junior college. After quarterback JaMarcus Russell declares for the NFL, only 18 players who participated in games for Saban will remain. Defensive tackle Glen Dorsey announced that he is returning for his senior year. Dorsey said a fractured shin could hurt his draft status. Former Oregon offensive coordinator Gary Crowton has replaced Jimbo Fisher, who went to Florida State.

Ole Miss has a commitment from Ashlee Palmer (6-3, 215), a former Compton Community College and Washington signee. Jerrell Powe (6-3, 290), a five-star defensive tackle from Hargrave Military Academy, who signed with the Rebels last year but was ineligible, said he is going to resign again this season. John Thompson has been named the defensive coordinator at Ole Miss. He was the DC at South Carolina and Florida. Orgeron had been serving as the DC. Joe McKnight (6-1, 193), a five-star running back from John Curtis High in River Ridge, La., has dropped Notre Dame from his list and added Ole Miss.

Arkansas receiver Marcus Monk is returning for his senior season. Cornerback Chris Houston and defensive end Jamaal Anderson have decided to cast their lot with the NFL. Rob Taylor, the director of football operations, has been fired after only one year. Gus Malzahn, the former Hog offensive coordinator has accepted a job on the Tulsa coaching staff with Todd Grantham. Dallas Cowboy assistant David Lee has replaced Malzahn. Former Miami coach Larry Coker had been mentioned as a possible replacement. Nutt told Malzahn that he would be sharing coordinator duties with Lee. Offensive line coach Mike Markuson and quarterbacks coach Alex Wood interviewed for other jobs in Minnesota and North Carolina. Quarterback Mitch Mustain has asked for and been granted his release. He has yet to say that he is transferring. However, he has cleaned out his dorm room and not enrolled in class.

Kentucky receiver Keenan Burton, who caught 77 passes last season, announced that he is returning for this senior year. Coach Rich Brooks has named defensive back coach Steve Brown to replace Mike Archer, who went to N C State for the same position. The Wildcats could return as many as eight starters next season.

Wake Forest linebacker Jon Abbate has declared his intentions to go to the NFL. He led the team in tackles this past season with 120.

Clemson received a visit from Brandon Hicks (6-3, 205), the linebacker from Forrest High in Jacksonville, last weekend. Hicks said the visit went well, but Florida is still his leader although Clemson has moved ahead of Miami. Clemson coaches visited in his home Tuesday night. Assistant Ron West, who left Clemson to join West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez’s staff earlier in the week, has changed his mind and returned to the Tigers’ staff. Verbal commitment Willy Korn (6-2, 200), a quarterback from Duncan High in Byrnes, S. C., enrolled in classes this week.

Florida State had a visit from last week from Ahmad Paige (6-3, 175), a receiver from Sterlington, La. Paige said the visit went well. He will take an unofficial visit this weekend to Florida and then visit USC the following weekend. Paige has already visited Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. Before he committed to Florida, James Wilson (6-4, 308), a five-star offensive lineman from Nease High, wanted to meet offensive line coach Rick Trickett, who is close to Panther coach Craig Howard. Dexter Carter is the new running backs coach at FSU. Former N C State coach Chuck Amato has joined the FSU staff. Pearl River Community College defensive end Brian Coulter (6-4, 255), a FSU commitment, received a visit this week from four Nole coaches. Enrique Davis (5-11, 212), a four-star and Rivals100 running back from Lynn Haven Mosley, is visiting FSU this weekend. He is a soft verbal to Auburn. The Tigers are his leaders but he is very interested in FSU. Those are the two teams that he is deciding between.

Miami coach Randy Shannon has hired Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Patrick Nix as offensive coordinator. Shannon interviewed Northern Illinois co-offensive coordinator John Bond to fill the vacant position of offensive coordinator. He appeared to be the main candidate after several others such as Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin, and Rutgers assistant coach John McNulty had taken their names out of the job. Tommie Robinson, the Memphis running backs coach, has emerged as a favorite for the same position.

Several former Miami players have said they will donate money to upgrade facilities such as Cortez Kennedy who gave $25,000. Mike Johnson (6-2, 207), a quarterback from Durham (NC) Hillside has moved his visit date from this weekend to Super Bowl weekend. He has narrowed his choices to Miami, North Carolina and Arkansas. Woodny Turenne (6-2, 190), a cornerback from Visalia (Calif.) College of Sequoias, is not sure when or if he will visit Miami. He has already visited Florida, Washington State and Louisville. He attended high school in the Miami area. Miami commitment Damien Berry (5-11, 197), a defensive back from Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades, is visiting LSU this weekend and Miami on Super Bowl weekend. Jermaine McKenzie (6-1, 164), a receiver from Brandenton (Fla.) Academy, visits this weekend. McKenzie, a Cane verbal, is friends with Alabama commitment Robert Marve, who is also visiting.

Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey has interviewed twice for the Miami Dolphins job. Gailey and Jim Mora, the former Atlanta Falcon head coach, are believed to be the front runners for the job. If Gailey leaves for Miami then defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta could be a candidate to replace him.

North Carolina defensive coordinator Marvin Sanders is leaving the school to pursue another job.

Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster was the winner of the Broyles Award for the most valuable assistant in the nation. Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, Oklahoma assistant Brent Venables, Ohio State assistant Joe Daniels, and Louisville offensive coordinator Paul Petrino were the finalists.

Minnesota has hired Tim Brewster, the former Denver Bronco tight ends coach.

Florida International offensive line coach Leon Searcy has been released. He is expected to vie for a sideline reporter for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Rick Minter and quarterback coach Peter Vaas have been fired. Minter will be replaced by New York Jets secondary coach Corwin Brown and former Irish quarterback Ron Powlus is expected to replace Vaas. Armando Allen (5-10, 185), a running back from Hialeah-Miami (Fla.) Lakes High, has already enrolled in classes.

SEC HOOPS

Arkansas guard Gary Ervin had 26 assists and only two turnovers in the previous three games before the Ole Miss loss. The Rebels forced him to commit seven turnovers. He did have six assists. Arkansas has lost 10- of- 11 games in Oxford. The Hogs committed 21 turnovers.

Ole Miss had five players in double figures in the win over Arkansas last Saturday. Dwayne Curtis led the Rebels with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Kentucky guard Ramel Bradley has scored in double figures in ten straight games since moving from point guard to shooting guard. Freshman point guard Derrick Jasper contributed eight points, eight rebounds, four steals, one blocked shot and three assists. The Wildcats win over Mississippi State was their 10th straight victory. Kentucky shot 36%, its worst of the season and had no offensive rebounds in the first half, yet still won the game. Randolph Morris scored 11- of- his 17 points in the second half including a lay-in and a blocked shot in the final minute to preserve the win.

Georgia senior Levi Stukes broke out of his scoring slump and hit for 23 points in the win over Vanderbilt. Stukes had not scored in double figures the previous four games before getting hot against the Commodores. He also had a key steal that sealed the victory with a little more than a minute left in the game. Georgia is 4-1 this season when he scores more than 20 point in a game.

Vanderbilt, who beat Tennessee earlier in the week, lost to Georgia despite hitting 13 three-point shots. The Commodores hit 10 in the first half alone.

LSU’s Terry Martin made his first start of the season pay off in last Saturday’s win against Auburn with 23 points, including 17 in the first half. The win over Auburn was the 18th straight SEC victory at home for the Tigers.

Florida’s Lee Humphrey had a career high 27 points, including seven three-point shots, in the win over South Carolina last Saturday. The loss was the worst in coach Dave Odom’s six years at South Carolina. Florida has held Georgia and South Carolina to less than 40% shooting in two SEC wins The Gators are off until they play Ole Miss at home Saturday.

Tennessee made only 5- of- 11 free throws in the loss at Ohio State. The Vols couldn’t stop sophomore center Greg Oden who had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Tennessee was only 7- of- 31 from the three point range. They were outrebounded 46- to- 29. Guard JuJuan Smith was only 4- of- 20 from the field in losses to Vandy and Ohio State.
