Arkansas former quarterback Mitch Mustain has re-enrolled in school, but won’t rejoin the team. Mustain has put feelers out to Tulsa and Oklahoma among other schools. Former Hog offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has joined the Tulsa staff. Patrick Jones (6-0, 298), a defensive tackle from Lovejoy, Ga., committed to the Hogs. Kentucky, Mississippi State and Troy have offered him. Joe Chaisson (6-2, 167), a dual-threat, three-star quarterback from Beaumont, Texas, also committed to the Hogs. Chaisson is the No. 60 overall recruit in the state of Texas. Allen Dick (6-4, 200), a three-star quarterback from Allen, Texas, has committed to the Razorbacks. He is the brother of starting quarterback Casey Dick.
Auburn commitment Enrique Davis (5-11, 212), a four-star running back from Lynn Haven (Fla.) Mosley, reconfirmed his Tiger verbal even though he was very impressed with his Florida State visit. Jared Cooper (6-4, 287), a three-star offensive lineman from Brewton, Ala., reconfirmed his commitment to Auburn after visiting the Plains this weekend. He was reconsidering his decision after Alabama offered him. Auburn had offered him a greyshirt then they upped the ante with a full scholarship offer after Alabama showed interest. Tiger coach Tommy Tuberville visited this week with Frank Alexander (6-5, 230), a four-star defensive end from Baton Rouge Southern Lab. Alexander is down to Miami, Tulane, Auburn and Oklahoma. The Tigers lead for Nick Fairley (6-4, 257), a three-star offensive lineman from Mobile Williamson. He visits Alabama this weekend and FSU next weekend.
Alabama coach Nick Saban made some inroads on Sidell Corley (6-4, 250), a four-star defensive end from Mobile (Ala) McGill-Toolen, who is a Florida commitment. Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Oklahoma are the four schools he is considering. His father said the schools will know his decision on Feb. 5. Florida’s Urban Meyer visits Monday. He is visiting LSU this weekend. Robert Marve (6-1, 195) a four-star quarterback from Tampa (Fla.) Plant, said he enjoyed his Miami visit this past weekend. Marve said after Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix visited that he is no longer committed to Alabama. He visits Hawaii next weekend and won’t return until Monday night. Marve said he will make an announcement probably within a week. Marquis Maze (5-8, 160), a three-star athlete from Birmingham (Ala.) Tarrant, said he had a good visit to Alabama this past weekend. Maze said he is deciding among Alabama, Tennessee, Miami and Michigan. He is visiting Miami this weekend. Nick Fanuzzi (6-3, 200), a three-star quarterback from San AntonioTexas, enjoyed his visit to Alabama. The Miami commitment said Alabama, Miami and Michigan State are still being considered. He has not eliminated any school.
The Tide could pick up a commitment from Luther Davis (6-4, 255), a defensive tackle from West Monroe, La., who visited Alabama this past weekend. Davis, a former LSU verbal, was tight lipped about the visit because Tiger coach Les Miles doesn’t like commitments to visit other schools. LSU has pulled it scholarship offer to Davis. Noel Devine (5-8, 175), a five-star running back from North Fort Myers, is looking hard at Alabama, FSU, West Virginia and LSU. Kareem Jackson (5-10, 185), a two-star cornerback from Fork Union Academy, not only committed to Alabama, but he was scheduled to enroll Tuesday. Kourtnei Brown (6-5, 230), a four-star defensive end from Charlotte (N. C.) Victory Christian, visited Clemson last weekend. The Tide verbal is down to North Carolina (this weekend’s visit), Alabama and Clemson. Michael McNeil (6-2, 200), a safety from Mobile Davidson, visits this weekend. He has already visited FSU, Auburn and Tennessee. Lennon Creer (6-1, 202), a running back from Tatum, Texas could visit Alabama this weekend. He has visited Oklahoma and Tennessee. Demetrius Goode (5-11, 200), a four-star running back from Hargrave Military Academy, has decommitted from Kentucky and is visiting Alabama this weekend.
Ole Miss grabbed a commitment from Alabama when Lamarcus Williams (6-1, 280), a defensive tackle from Bastrop, La., changed his mind and pledged to the Rebels. One of his former teammates is Rebel receiver Marshay Green.
LSU has a new offensive line coach in Greg Studrawa, who was the offensive coordinator at Bowling Green for the past four years. He replaces Stacy Searels, who went to Georgia. Coach Les Miles said last week that guard Will Arnold and Keith Zinger are doing better physically. Arnold, who missed half of last season after knee surgery, will be ready for fall, if not spring practice. Zinger, who missed the majority of the 2006 season with a stomach ailment, currently weighs 272 pounds after he gained 50 pounds. LSU is recruiting Terrance Toliver (6-4, 185), a five-star receiver from Hempstead, Texas, said he is not leaning toward either Florida or LSU. He has yet to set an announcement date. Demetruis Byrd (6-2, 195), a receiver from Pearl River (Ms.) Community College, committed to LSU this past weekend. He said that he will cancel his visit to FSU this weekend.
Mississippi State has three junior college signees to join the team last week. Defensive tackle Jessie Bowman (6-1, 335) from Copiah-Lincoln Community College is the most heralded of the three. Dominic Douglas (6-2, 225), a linebacker from Hinds Community College, and Josh Riddell (6-1, 195), a quarterback from Foothill (Calif.) College have also enrolled.
Kentucky backup quarterback Curtis Pulley has withdrawn from school for the spring semester. Coach Rich Brooks said Pulley might re-enroll later in the year. His departure leaves the Wildcats with little or no backup experience behind Andre Woodson. John Keye (6-4, 220), a receiver from Jackson, Ga., who had verbally committed to Kentucky was killed in a car wreck last Saturday night. Keye was rated as the No. 33 best player in the state of Georgia.
Georgia commitment Antwane Greenlee (6-6, 302), an offensive lineman from Columbus (Ga.) Hardaway, was in Athens on an unofficial visit this past weekend. He confirmed that he is still solid in his Bulldog commitment after meeting with Searels and Coach Mark Richt. Both Georgia and FSU coaches are going to visit him this week. Drew Butler (6-0, 196), a kicker from Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge, committed to the Bulldogs Tuesday after leaving Athens this past weekend with a scholarship offer. Duke has also offered Butler, the son of Georgia great Kevin Butler. Allen Bailey (6-3, 270), a defensive lineman from Darien, Ga., stunned many in the recruiting world by eliminating Georgia. He said Miami, Alabama and Florida are his four schools. Bailey wants to play middle linebacker. Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong has made a big impression on him. Bulldog coaches also visited Cameron Heyward (6-6, 270), a defensive lineman from Suwanne (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge on Tuesday. He is scheduled to visit this weekend.
Florida received a verbal commitment from Carlos Dunlap (6-6, 245), a five-star defensive end from North Charleston, S.C. He visited Florida this past weekend. Dunlap, the nation’s No. 5 overall prospect, chose Florida over South Carolina. He said the family atmosphere and the plan that the defensive coaches have for him was the turning point. Nevin McKenzie (6-2, 210), a safety from Athens (Texas) Trinity Valley Community College, visited Florida this past weekend. McKenzie, the No. 39 rated prospect on the Rivals100 junior college players, has already visited Tennessee, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Ahmad Paige (6-3, 175), a receiver from Sterlington, La., visited Florida this past weekend on an unofficial visit with his parents. Paige said the visit went well, but it didn’t change his team order of Florida, FSU, Tennessee and Southern Cal. Brandon Hicks (6-3, 210), a linebacker from Forrest High (Fla.) in Jacksonville appears to be limiting his choices to Miami and Florida. He took his parents on trips to both schools, but didn’t take them to Clemson. Coaches from Florida and Miami visited his home this week. Florida’s latest commitment is Justin Trattou (6-4, 230), a defensive end from Ramsey, N. J. He decomitted from Notre Dame and committed to the Gators. Notre Dame defensive coaches changing to a 3-4 defense soured him on the Irish.
The Gators and LSU are the top two schools for Chad Jones (6-2, 220), the No. 1 ranked athlete according to Rivals.com, from Baton Rouge Southern Lab. He has visited Florida (his best visit), FSU and Southern Cal. Jones, a top baseball prospect, might also visit Alabama and Miami. John Brown (6-2, 285), a defensive tackle from Lakeland, Fla., visits Florida this weekend after trekking to Alabama last weekend. It appears the Tide and Gators are vying for his signature. Joe McKnight (6-1, 193), a running back from River Ridge John Curtis High in La., visits LSU this weekend. He has visited Ole Miss, and Southern Cal. He might visit Alabama, Miami and FSU. Jerry Howard (6-4, 240) defensive end from Orlando (Fla.) Jones, said he will announce his decision on Monday. Howard, a Florida verbal, has visited FSU and Rutgers. He visits Florida this weekend.
South Carolina has 30 commitments with six already enrolled. The Gamecocks received a verbal commitment from Chris Culliver (6-0, 190), a receiver from Garner, N. C. South Carolina is recruiting Josh Bynes (6-2, 241), a four-star linebacker from Lauderdale Lakes (Fla.) Boyd Anderson. Bynes visited South Carolina this past weekend. He is one of South Carolina’s big uncommitted targets. Auburn, Louisville, and Iowa are also recruiting him. Bynes said he will decide on signing day. Weslye Saunders (6-5, 270), a four-star tight end from Durham, North Carolina, is the second big commitment target. He is down to North Carolina and South Carolina.
Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe is staying in Knoxville after mulling over an overture from the Cleveland Browns. Howard University officials have asked for permission to speak to receivers coach Trooper Taylor about their head coach job. Tennessee is recruiting Dwight Jones (6-5, 210), a five-star receiver from Burlington, N. C., who visited Clemson this past weekend. Jones, a North Carolina commitment, visited Tennessee on Jan. 12. He is also visiting North Carolina on Jan. 26. Tennessee has only two visitors this weekend—Devonte Campbell (6-1, 234), a four-star tight end from Forestville, Md. and Markish Jones (6-0, 183), a four-star receiver from Spartanburg, S.C. Alabama, FSU, Kentucky, and Maryland are recruiting him.
Clemson offensive coordinator Rob Spence turned down a multi-year deal with new Minnesota coach Tim Brewster. Miguel Chavis (6-5, 255), a defensive end from Hargrave Military Academy, has committed to Clemson. He chose Clemson over Georgia and Maryland. Clemson hosts FSU on Labor Day night. The Tigers will not have a Thursday night home or away game in 2007.
Florida State commitment Brian Coulter (6-4, 255), a weakside defensive end from Pearl River Community College, renewed his commitment after his weekend visit. Anthony Grosso (6-6, 265), a two-star offensive lineman from Matawan, N. J., enjoyed his visit to FSU. Grosso, a Northwestern verbal, said he might not take his Rutgers visit this weekend. Antoine Carter (6-4, 226), a two-star defensive end from Dillard (Fla.) High, visited FSU this past weekend. FSU, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Auburn are recruiting him. Receiver Chris Davis was the offensive MVP and linebacker Lawrence Timmons was the defensive MVP at the annual football banquet Saturday. Aaron Greshman (6-2, 222), a three-star inside linebacker from Mayo (Fla.) Lafayette, has committed to FSU. He has been offered by Louisville, Michigan State and South Florida. Michael McNeil (6-2, 200), a Rivals100 safety from Mobile (Ala.) Davidson, had a good visit to FSU. Coaches from Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn are coming Wednesday and FSU coaches are coming Thursday.
The Noles hosted 11 players this past weekend. Besides Davis, the Noles hosted Robert Elliot (6-0, 191), a Rivals250 running back from Okolona, Mississippi. He is an Ole Miss verbal. Markish Jones (6-0, 183), a three-star receiver from Spartanburg, South Carolina, has FSU at the top of his list. He is a Clemson verbal commitment. Clemson, Tennessee and FSU are his three schools even though he is visiting the Vols and Kentucky in the next two weeks. Dionte Allen (6-0, 175), a four-star cornerback from Orchard Lake, Mi., said he is solid to FSU despite overtures from Ohio State. Noel Devine (5-8, 178), a running back from North Fort Myers, met with Bobby Bowden Wednesday. He might visit FSU this weekend before going to Alabama and West Virginia. FSU, Alabama and West Virginia are the schools he is concentrating on the most. Robert Elliott (6-0, 191), a running back from Okolona, Ms., had a home visit from Bowden this week. Elliott, an Ole Miss verbal, is also considering FSU, Mississippi State and Memphis. Rae Sykes (6-4, 240), a four-star defensive end from Alcoa, Tenn., visits this weekend. He visits Tennessee next weekend. Sykes said his decision is between FSU and Tennessee. Rodney Hudson (6-2, 276), a three-star offensive lineman from B.C. Rain (Ala.) in Mobile, visits this weekend. Hudson, a West Virginia commitment, is coming because of his relationship with offensive line coach Rick Trickett.
Miami had a surprise visit from Demarcus VanDyke (6-0, 161), an athlete from Pace (Fla.) High this past weekend. VanDyke, a Florida commitment, said the visit went well. He didn’t change his commitment from Florida. Joseph Nicolas (6-3, 198), a three-star safety from Homestead, Fla., visited Miami this past weekend. He was a Rutgers commitment going in and came back undecided between the two teams. Brandon Hicks (6-4, 205), a linebacker from Jacksonville (Fla.) Forrest, said he is leaning toward Miami and Florida and less with Clemson. Chris Perry (6-3, 319), a three-star defensive tackle from Keller, Texas, said he is once again interested in Miami after committing to Nebraska. He originally committed to Miami. Shawnbrey McNeal, a running back from Dallas, Texas Madison, verbally committed to Miami. He originally committed to Texas A & M. Kareem McNeal (6-4, 290), a lineman from Hargrave Military Academy by way of Tallahassee (Fla.) Godby, is down to Arkansas and Miami. Orlando Franklin (6-6, 300), a lineman from Delray Beach (Fla.) Atlantic, has re-committed to the Canes. Marquis Maze (5-8, 160), an athlete from Birmingham (Ala.) Tarrant, is visiting this weekend. Maze, who originally verbally committed to Michigan, has already visited Alabama.
Miami opens the 2007 season against Marshall. They also host Texas A & M Thursday night Sept. 20 shortly after traveling to Oklahoma on Sept. 8.
Southern Cal plays at Arizona State on Thanksgiving night. The UCLA game has been moved to Dec. 1.
