SEC coaches and officials meet next Friday in Destin, Fla., for their annual gathering. Florida president Bernie Machen will present a plan to consider a playoff system. Machen wants to ask the presidents how much money is there not on the table that could be gained from a playoff. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney in a letter to Machen said his conference is not interested in discussing a playoff. ACC Commissioner John Swofford said he sees more of a move toward a plus-one model (the two highest rated winners of the BCS bowls move to a national championship game) before a full blown playoff.
Eight of the 120 Division I programs have eight home games this season. Four of those—Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky and Vanderbilt—are in the SEC. The other four are Arizona State, Rutgers, Stanford and Michigan.
LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was suspended indefinitely after his arrest last weekend at a Baton Rouge casino. He tried to use his brother’s identification to gain access. Perrilloux’s name also came up in a federal investigation in New Orleans one week after the Sugar Bowl. For the time being he will not be involved in any team activities. Matt Flynn and incoming freshman Jarrett Lee are the only two quarterbacks on the roster.
Alabama coach Nick Saban could have violated a secondary NCAA rule by having contact (dialogue in excess of a greeting) with some South Florida recruits last week. Miami Krop linebacker Etienne Sabino said the Tide coach spoke to him and Miami Northwest High juniors Marcus Fortson and Brandon Washington said the same. Coach George Smith at Fort Lauderdale St Thomas Aquinas said he will not allow any of the Alabama coaching staff to recruit his players due to the firing of former coach Mike Shula. Three of Shula’s nephew’s played at St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Tide has nine players—defensive tackles Josh Chapman, Kerry Murphy, Alfred McCullough, Chavis Williams, linebacker Rolano McClain, offensive lineman Patrick Crump, receivers Brandon Gibson and Marquis Maze-- on the Alabama roster for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game. Fullback Jeramie Griffin is on the Mississippi roster. The game is set for June 2 at Ladd-Peeples Stadium. Only Mississippi State has more players represented in the game with 10. The Alabama squad has won seven of the past eight games.
Syndicated columnist Paul Finebaum wrote in his article last Saturday that it was 20 years ago that Alabama hired Bill Curry over Bobby Bowden. At the time, Finebaum was writing a story about the search and was told by a member of the board of trustees that the search committee passed on Bowden because he was “too old (57 at the time) and had too much baggage.”
Arkansas has verbal commitment No. 4 from Cruz Williams (6-4, 206), a receiver from Little Rock Pulaski (Ark.) Academy. Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Tulsa have offered him. Former Hog quarterback Mitch Mustain has transferred to Southern Cal. He will have three years to play. Mustain is expected to compete with Mark Sanchez and John David Booty next in 2008. Receiver Damian Williams, another former Hog signee, has already transferred to USC.
Auburn has five signees for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game. Four of the signees—offensive lineman Jared Cooper, Nick Fairley, linebacker Eltoro Freeman and cornerback Ryan Williams—are on the Alabama squad. Offensive lineman Chaz Ramsey is the only Auburn representative on the Mississippi squad. Sophomore linebacker Patrick Trahan and junior nose guard Greg Smith are likely academically ineligible for the 2007. Auburn has a lot more depth at defensive line than linebacker.
Mississippi State was one of 32 teams to graduate better than 70% of its players from the 2001-02 freshman class. The other teams in the SEC to accomplish the same feat were Alabama, Florida and Vanderbilt.
Ole Miss receiver signee A J Jackson has enrolled in summer school at the College of Sequoias in Calif., in order to qualify. Jackson, who is 6-foot-6 with 4.5 speed, would be a plus for the Rebel receivers. He had 19 touchdowns on only 42 catches while playing with present Ole Miss quarterback Brent Schaeffer during his freshman season.
Florida has a big interest in Darrell Scott (6-0, 215), a running back from Ventura, Calif., who might be the top prospect in the nation. He dominated the recent NIKE camp at Stanford University. FSU, Miami, Michigan, Southern Cal, Cal, Texas, UCLA and Colorado have all offered him. Observers at the NIKE camp said the only performance that came close was Kevin Jones in the State College NIKE camp in 2000 before he went to Virginia Tech and the Detroit Lions. Also at the camp was Jerry Rice, who was watching his son, Jerry Rice, Jr., who is a 2009 prospect.
Gator defensive tackle signee John Brown is working hard in order to qualify according to his coach Dan Talbot. Brown appears to be in good shape with his test score but he needs to do well on a math and history class in order to have the grade point average. Coach Urban Meyer and his entire staff visited the Tampa Bay Bucs morning and afternoon practice sessions on Thursday.
South Carolina redshirt freshman defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis is listed at 6-foot-5, 327 pounds on the roster. Coach Steve Spurrier said if Ellis lost enough weight that he would stay on the defensive line. His target weight is 315. Ellis said he weighed 375 last summer mostly due to his love of French fries. Linebacker Casper Brinkley is recovering from having his knee scoped two weeks ago to clean out damaged cartilage from his left knee. Brinkley tied for the team lead with seven sacks last season.
Georgia former athletic director is recovering after throat surgery. Dooley, who turns 75 in September, had a tumor removed near his throat. Freshman running back Caleb King has met academic requirements. King said he will be on campus the first week of June.
Miami donors and officials were given a tour of Dolphin Stadium Friday. No decision has been made on the Canes moving from the Orange Bowl.
S & C testing: In every event except for the vertical leap (33.8 to 31.8) and the bench press (299 to 291), overall the Canes were identical or better than the 2006 season. The team body fat was down a percentage point to 13.1. The average 40- yard dash time is about the same (4.88 to 4.89). Miami’s team short shuttle has improved from 4.5 to 4.4. This is an example of increased explosiveness. S & C coaches said Darryl Sharpton is the hardest worker in the weight room. Freshman tailback Graig Cooper has won the weight room freak award. He squats 440 pounds and runs a 4.3 in the 40. Quarterback Kirby Freeman ran a 4.43 40- yard dash. He was third on the team with a 36- inch vertical leap. Kirby, who has lost nine pounds, weighs 202. Quarterback Kyle Wright went from a 4.59 40-yard dash to a 4.71. Receiver Sam Shields ran a 4.26 in the 40. Bruce Johnson was second at 4.34. Offensive line Andrew Bain is the strongest Cane with a 625- pound back squat and a 445- pound bench press. Last year, he lifted 600 and 385 pounds.
The Miami coaching staff had a weekend retreat to Las Vegas in early May to get to know each other better.
Florida State has two signees on the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star rosters. Athlete Tawain Easterling is on the Mississippi roster and center Rodney Hudson is on the Alabama roster. The Noles will receive a visit in June from E. J. Manuel (6-6, 203), a dual-threat Rivals100 quarterback from Virginia Beach Bayside High. Besides FSU, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State and Rutgers have offered him. He often receives contact from FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher. Sophomore receiver Preston Parker, who is coming off shoulder surgery, has been given his full medical release. The FSU game at Colorado on Sept. 15 has been picked up by ESPN for a 10 pm kickoff. Fox Sports Net is the rights holder for the game, but it is one of five contests that are being sublicensed to ESPN. This was the original time that UCF officials thought their home opener against Texas would be shown. FSU’s opener at Clemson on Labor Day night will also be televised on ESPN.
The Noles have a ninth verbal commitment in Jabaris Little (6-3, 240), a tight end/H-back from Tallahassee Lincoln High. Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas are among the schools to offer him. FSU has picked up commitment No. 10 in Avis Commack (6-4, 182), a receiver from First Coast High in Jacksonville, Florida. Miami, Clemson, South Carolina, Florida and Illinois have offered him. He joins his teammates Nigel Carr and Jermaine Thomas as Nole commitments.
Virginia Tech has had two players transfer in the past few days. Running back George Bell, who had 107 yards on 35 carries, will transfer to Division II Catawba College in North Carolina. Tight end Brandon Barden is transferring to Vanderbilt.
Big 12 coaches met at their annual gathering this past Tuesday. The coaches also voiced a desire for an early signing period. ACC coaches had the same recommendation in their recent meetings.
