Mississippi State received a verbal commitment from Templeton Hardy (6-4, 295), a defensive lineman from North Panola, Ms. Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma and Southern Cal are recruiting him.

Ole Miss signee Jerrell Powe is close to selecting a school after becoming academically eligible according to his attorney Donald Jackson. Powe has signed with Ole Miss the past two seasons, but failed to meet academic requirements. Jackson said 20 schools have contacted him about signing the former Wayne County standout. The Central Mississippi Ole Miss club had a rarity Tuesday night when football coach Ed Orgeron, basketball coach Andy Kennedy, baseball coach Mike Bianco and women’s basketball coach Renee Lader spoke at the same event. Receiver signee A J Jackson will likely not be eligible. Also, former running back Mico McSwain, who was moved to receiver, is on the verge of being ineligible.

South Carolina freshman offensive lineman Quintin Richardson, who was stabbed three weeks ago, has been arrested for marijuana possession. He has been suspended indefinitely per team policy. Richardson, who has been in trouble twice in 20 days, has apologized for his mistakes. Defensive back signee Arkee Smith is still awaiting word on a revised transcript centering on an honors class. Akeem Auguste, another defensive back signee, is also waiting on being cleared.

Several freshmen have been impressive in 7- on- 7 drills for South Carolina including Jason Barnes, Chris Culliver and Joseph Hills. Freshman cornerback Jamire Williams, who is from Jacksonville’s First Coast High School, has been impressive in man coverage.

Florida linebacker Jon Demps, who missed spring practice due to off-field issues, said he will play this season. Demps also is recovering from knee surgery. He played in four games as a freshman and none last season because of his knee situation. In February, coach Urban Meyer said Demps was no longer on the team and he is not listed on the current team roster. Gator defensive lineman John Brown is working hard to qualify. He is taking an online class in order to finish his work.

In this year’s Friday Night Lights camp, more than 40 players with a ranking of four-stars will be there. Last year, 25 were present. The state attorney’s office has dropped a felony theft charge against safety Dorian Munroe, who took a police department boot from his car and put it in his trunk. Darrell Scott, the No. 1 running back in the nation who is from Ventura, Calif., according to Rivals.com, could be at Friday Night Lights this weekend. He has also formed a friendship with FSU commitment E J Manuel.

Other instate players who could attend are: Star Jackson, a dual threat signal caller from Lake Worth, Fla., Jamie Harper, a running back from Trinity Christian, who is listing Florida and Clemson as his top two schools, Harry Adams, a receiver from Fort Lauderdale Dillard, who has Florida and Auburn leading, Aldarius Johnson, a Rivals100 receiver from Miami Northwestern, Matt Patchan, a lineman from Seffner Armwood and Greg Shaw, an offensive lineman from Miami Pace,

Alabama players Roy Upchurch, a running back and Brandon Fanney and Brandon Deadrick, both defensive linemen were arrested early Sunday morning on misdemeanor charges in front of a bar on the Strip in Tuscaloosa. This will be coach Nick Saban’s first time in deciding punishment for players. Temporary bleachers that seat 5,800 fans will be added to Jacksonville Memorial Stadium for the Alabama vs. Florida State game. At the Big East media days, South Florida coach talked about still having a 2003 contract from Alabama on his desk as a memento from the time the Tide tried to hire him before deciding on Mike Shula.

Tennessee has released its 2009 schedule that features seven home games including UCLA, Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina. During a press conference on Monday, Coach Phil Fulmer dealt with several different issues. He discussed tailback Arian Foster continuing to deal positively with his costly fumble in the Outback Bowl and the maturity on and off the field of LaMarcus Coker.

Fulmer continues to laud safety Jarod Parrish for having a good spring. Parrish needs to come through in the secondary after the Vols lost three starters from last year. A D Mike Hamilton said Fulmer is not on the hot seat regardless of media attention. Vol quarterback Erik Ainge has raved about the speed of freshmen receivers Brent Vinson, Kenny O’Neal, Gerald Jones and Ahmad Paige. Senior defensive tackle J T Mapu is down to 285 after weighing 300 last year. His recent 425 pound bench press far surpasses his 315 pound effort last year.

LSU has sold a record 68,100 season tickets that surpasses the record of 67,700 that was set last season. The Tigers have home games against Arkansas, Auburn, Virginia Tech and South Carolina. Virginia Tech fans only received 4,500 tickets compared to the normal 7,000 that go to visiting SEC fans. Freshman receiver Terrance Tolliver has been turning heads during 7- on- 7 drills. Quarterback Jarrett Lee and safety Chad Jones are also doing well. Coach Les Miles is cautiously optimistic about the health of offensive lineman Will Arnold.

Georgia second string defensive lineman Paul “Tripp” Taylor has been accused of taking part in an assault on another man during a Memorial Day fight. He has been charged with misdemeanor simple assault. Running back signee Caleb King was arrested early Tuesday morning for driving with a suspended license and driving down the wrong way on a one-way street while riding a moped. He is not expected to miss any playing time.

Arkansas running backs coach Danny Nutt has resigned due to health reasons including bleeding around the brain stem. Nutt, the brother of head coach Houston Nutt, has been on the staff since 1996. Tim Horton, the former Air Force offensive coordinator, has replaced him. Horton is a former Hog receiver.

Auburn has a verbal commitment from Jarien Moreland (6-4, 319), an offensive lineman from Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades. LSU and FIU have offered him.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden will be inducted Sunday in the College Football Hall of Fame. Bowden has 366 wins, three more than Penn State’s Joe Paterno. Also being inducted are FSU’s Charlie Ward, Florida’s Emmitt Smith, Virginia Tech’s Bruce Smith and Minnesota’s Carl Eller. Rover Anthony Houllis had minor knee surgery Monday. He started the first three games last year before cartilage damage in his left knee forced him to miss the last three games.

British Footman (6-1, 182), an athlete from Tallahassee (Fla.) Godby, has committed to FSU. He is a long shot academically. Charles Deas (6-4, 315), a defensive lineman who is at Milford Academy in N.Y., should be finished by January. He signed last year with LSU. LSU, FSU, Miami, Florida and North Carolina are his top five schools. He is originally from Ft. Lauderdale Dillard. Defensive end signee Jamar Jackson tore an ACL and will miss the 2007 season.

First Coast High (Fla.) Seminole signees Jermaine Thomas, a running back, Avis Commack, a receiver and Nigel Carr, a linebacker, took part in the FSU camp over the weekend. They hung out with Melvin Ray, a heralded receiver from North Florida Christian. All three First Coast players are involved in a 7- on- 7 camp at Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Fla., on Saturday.

The Noles have commitment No. 14 from Travis Arnold (5-10, 184), a safety from Madison County, Fla. LSU, South Carolina, Marshall, Clemson and Florida have offered him. Terrance Parks (6-1, 200), a safety from Fairburn, Ga., is commitment No. 13. Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, and Florida have offered him.

Miami freshman quarterback Robert Marve is recovering from an injury on his non-throwing hand that he sustained while riding in a car driven by freshman receiver Jermaine McKenzie that flipped on Interstate 75 after McKenzie fell asleep early Monday morning. Sophomore linebacker Colin McCarthy was also in the car, but he walked away with only minor injuries. Marve’s high school coach, Robert Weiner from Tampa Plant, said Marve has withdrawn from school and will likely redshirt this season. He had surgery Monday night on a finger on his non-throwing hand. No structural damage was found during his surgery. McKenzie, who drew rave reviews during 7-on-7 drills, is in a neck brace because of hairline fractures and his availability is uncertain. No surgery is necessary. McKenzie has also withdrawn from summer school.

Davon Johnson (5-11, 161), a receiver from Booker T Washington, has committed to Miami. South Carolina, UCF, Rutgers and Ole Miss have offered him. Johnson said he will still take some visits.

Wake Forest linebacker Eric Berry will miss the 2007 season due to academics. He was supposed to replace Jon Abbate.

Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey said Calvin Booker, the former Auburn transfer, has been named the second string quarterback.

Clemson coach Tommy Bowden had his press conference at his annual media golf outing Tuesday. FSU hasn’t won at Clemson in six years and have dropped three of four to Clemson. Bowden said the Tiger offensive line is as talented as any team, but lacks experience. Bowden said he is committed to putting James Davis and C J Spiller on the field as often as possible. True freshman Willy Korn could push junior Cullen Harper for the quarterback job, but Harper is clearly the starter. Clemson fans have purchased a record 57,991 season tickets breaking the previous record of 57,625 in 1988.

The Big East comes into its media days with a lot of optimism after three teams-West Virginia, Rutgers and Louisville—finished in the top 12 of the final AP poll. The league went 5-0 in bowl games. The league is also looking for a ninth member for football only, but presently there are no takers. There was some discussion with Army and Navy, but neither school was interested.

The New York Post reported that several sources in conference offices, athletic directors and television networks have said there is growing support for a “Plus-one” format in which there will be a national title game following the playing of two semifinal games. The first title game could come in 2011. One conference source said there is too much money at stake and too much debate in the current system. The sources also said no existing bowl such as Cotton, Gator or Outback would be transformed into the title game because no conference wants to lose an existing postseason opportunity. One TV executive attending the Big East conference said a Plus one is going to happen sooner than later.

The Big Ten Network has hired Thom Brennaman, who is at the Cincinnati Reds network, to do play-by-play. Charles Davis will be the analyst. Former LSU coach Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith will be the analysts along with host Dave Revsine the studio host.

Notre Dame has agreed to play in the 71-year-old Citrus Bowl in 2011 and 2014 if stadium renovations are completed. No teams have been mentioned. The Orange County Commission is set to vote on a $1.1 billion plan to renovate the stadium and build a new arena.
