Florida Coach Urban Meyer said he would announce captains and the backup quarterback on Saturday. There is a belief that the battle comes down to John Brantley and Cam Newton with Bryan Waggener on the outside. Freshman Chas Henry has won the punting job. Gator middle linebacker Brandon Spikes is living up to expectations according to Meyer.
Southern Cal running back transfer Emmanuel Moody, a Texas native, mentioned Oklahoma State, Texas, North Carolina and Florida as possible schools that he is interested in transferring to in the future. Moody, who gained 459 yards last year for USC, missed the final four games with injuries. Moody, who wants to be a featured back, visited Florida and North Carolina this week. Junior Kestahn Moore continues to be the top running back with Jarred Fayson, Brandon James, Chevon Walker and Chris Rainey all in contention. Freshman John Brown has yet to be cleared by the Clearinghouse. Defensive end Justin Trattou, offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Jerimy Finch and defensive tackle Torrey Davis have lost their freshman stripe.
Former Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz visited Gator practice earlier in the week. Sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Antwine didn’t break his wrist as feared earlier. Senior Joey Ijas, who earned a scholarship, has been named the starting kicker this season. Meyer also said Riley Cooper and Dave Nelson will be in the receiver mix. Jason Watkins has been moved to right tackle and Phil Trautwein is now the left tackle. Joe Haden and Markihe Anderson are ahead in the cornerback race with Markus Manson and Wondy-Pierre Louis in the mix.
Kentucky’s scrimmage Saturday provided Coach Rich Brooks some answers at quarterback and on the offensive line. Redshirt freshman Mike Hartline is the backup quarterback to Andre Woodson and line appears to be Garry Williams at left tackle, Zipp Duncan at left guard, Eric Scott at center, Jason Leger at right guard and Justin Jeffries at right tackle.
Arkansas former quarterback Alex Mortensen has returned to Fayetteville. He will be a walk-on after transferring from Samford. He will have one year of eligibility remaining. Freshman receiver Crosby Tuck has impressed the coaches to the point that he could start. He has made significant progress during camp. Freshman kicker Alex Tejada has kicked up to 55 yards in scrimmages. Another freshman, D J Williams, has made a big impact at H-back.
Auburn special teams coach Eddie Gran has named freshman Wes Byrum as the field goal kicker and redshirt freshman Ryan Shoemaker as the punter. Receiver Robert Dunn is the No. 1 punt returner. Receiver Alex Rose is not practicing with the team, but he is enrolled in school. Coach Tommy Tuberville said he has to improve his grades. Signee Nick Fairley, who was not approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse, will start in junior college. Junior Blake Field is going to be the No. 2 quarterback. As many as nine freshmen such as offensive lineman Lee Ziemba, defensive back Mike McNeil, defensive end Antoine Carter, receiver Chris Slaughter and center Ryan Pugh could see playing time. Sophomore Antonio Coleman has reasserted himself as the second best pass rusher behind Quentin Groves. Running back Mario Fannin is coming back from a groin injury. Cornerback Jerraud Powers continues to be a disruptive force on defense. Offensive coordinator Al Borges said junior James Swinton is going to have a big role in the offensive this season.
Alabama senior cornerback Simeon Castille was arrested early Sunday morning for disorderly conduct. He was the fourth Alabama player to be arrested in the past five weeks. The Castille family and the police differ in their view of whether the senior cornerback should have been arrested. The arresting officer said he heard an expletive and saw Castille holding up traffic. Castille continued to use foul language while challenging passengers in a SUV to a fight. Castille said the passengers in the van were teammates. Coach Nick Saban said the issue would be handled internally.
The Tide defense redeemed itself in Saturday’s scrimmage. Reserve linebacker Marcel Stamps led the team in tackles with nine. Defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry had three sacks. Coach Nick Saban said running back Terry Grant (six rushes for 68 yards), Gilberry (7 tackles and 4 TFL) and receiver Matt Caddell were the top performers. Quarterback John Parker Wilson was 18- of -32 for 225 yards with three touchdowns and two picks. Sophomore Lorenzo Washington is pushing for playing time with first team nose tackle Brian Motley recovering from a broken bone in his right hand.
Ole Miss Coach Ed Orgeron said Brent Schaeffer and Seth Adams would be the two main quarterbacks. The running backs—BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bruce Hall and Cordera Eason-- made some big gains. Orgeron said the defensive line with Peria Jerry, Daverin Geralds and Jerrell Powe dominated the offensive line in practice. Ted Laurent, Rishaw Johnson, Johnny Brown and Powe still have yet to be approved by the Clearinghouse. The NCAA Clearinghouse has approved freshman linebacker Chris Strong.
Mississippi State Coach Sly Croom said the Bulldogs got little done in a recent scrimmage after running back Anthony Dixon was taken out of the game. The defense got the better of the offense. Sophomore linebacker Jamon Hughes continues to impress Croom. Freshman kicker Eric Richards broke his leg in the scrimmage when he had a punt blocked due to poor protection. Christian Ducre and Justin Williams are battling for the backup running back spot. Freshman quarterback Wesley Carroll is now the second team quarterback after the suspension of junior college transfer Josh Riddell on charges of drunken driving.
LSU Coach Les Miles said the quarterbacks and receivers were impressive in last Saturday’s scrimmage. Tailbacks Keiland Williams and Charles Scott had the most carries. Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has overcome his off the field problems to take over the second team duties. Freshman Jarrett Lee could benefit from a redshirt season.
Miles also said the offensive line has made progress in camp. Last year during the first half of the season, LSU averaged 135 yards per game. During the second half of the year, the Tigers averaged 183 yards per game during their last six wins. Part of the reason for the improvement was the offensive line. Three starters return on the line this season, but the right side of the line has two untested players in guard Lyle Hitt and tackle Carnell Stewart.
South Carolina starting quarterback Blake Mitchell has been suspended by the school for the opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. The reason for the suspension was his missing class during summer school. Also suspended (for the same reason) for the opener are reserve running back Bobby Wallace, who has a broken clavicle in his shoulder, and backup cornerback Chris Hail. Mitchell has appealed his decision. If he wins the appeal, Coach Steve Spurrier said he would play. Redshirt freshman Chris Smelley is the likely starter if Mitchell can’t go.
Gamecock receivers Freddie Brown (four for 52 yards) and Mark Barnes (4 for 80 yards) both caught touchdown passes in the 63-play scrimmage on Saturday. Barnes, a freshman, has played well since moving from safety to receiver. The defense had seven sacks, one pick and one fumble recovery. Chris Smelley was the best of the quarterbacks completing 13- of- 20 for 124 yards and one touchdown. Tommy Beecher, who was struggling with a shoulder injury, was 5- of- 8 for 79 yards. Jordin Lindsey, a defensive end, has been trying to clear up several academic issues. Coach Steve Spurrier said he expects the team to struggle against Louisiana Lafayette. “Heck, we’re struggling throwing the ball against air right now.” Some of the main questions remaining are at backup quarterback and a secondary receiver behind Kenny McKinley. Lemuel Jeanpierre is battling James Thompson for right guard and Garrett Anderson, Kevin Young and Gurminder Thind are fighting for left guard. Stoney Woodson is slightly ahead of Carlos Thomas for one of the cornerback spots.
In Wednesday night’s scrimmage, freshman Chris Culliver caught four passes for 68 yards including a 35-yard touchdown from Smelley (12- of- 16 for 169 yards with three scores and one pick). Three quarterbacks were 24- of- 34 for 267 yards and five scores. Mitchell was 8- of- 12 for 78 yards. Beecher was 4- of- 6 for 20 yards. Middle linebacker Jasper Brinkley is being held out of practice in order to allow his sprained ankle to heal.
Tennessee had a Saturday night scrimmage where the offensive started well, but mistakes quickly ended the drive. The tight ends and receivers had several dropped passes (eight). Freshman receiver Denarius Moore continues to separate himself from the other receivers. He scored on a kickoff return and a 27-yard reception. Trooper Taylor, the receiver coach, said Austin Rogers, who had four passes for 56 yards, is the go-to guy. The Vol starting receiver set is Rogers, Lucas Taylor and Josh Briscoe. Quintin Hancock, Moore and Casey Woods are in the second group. Freshman cornerback Eric Berry continues to impress. He intercepted a pass in the scrimmage. Berry had already picked off Ainge three different times in practice. Coach Phil Fulmer said the running game and offensive line are the most improved part of the team. Freshman defensive end Ben Martin is out two to four weeks with a bone bruise instead of a ligament tear as first thought. Freshman running backs Lennon Creer and Daryl Vereen have gotten a lot of work with the absence of LaMarcus Coker.
Vol linebacker Ryan Karl is involved in full contact after recovering from a back injury. Ramon Foster lined up at right tackle and Chris Scott was at right guard. Fulmer said both would stay there for the opener. Brad Cottam is also out possibly until the end of the year after having wrist surgery this week. Tennessee has lost tight end David Holbert (ACL) and LaMarcus Coker (suspension) in the past few weeks.
Georgia Coach Mark Richt has offensive line concerns with Scott Haverkamp’s ankle sprain and freshman Trinton Sturdivant’s lack of experience. Of the six cornerbacks in the first two games, only Bryan Evans has started a game. Ramarcus Brown’s suspension really hurt the experience of this group. Evans and Thomas Flowers seem to have the edge on sophomores Asher Allen and Prince Miller, with Donavon Baldwin and freshman Vance Cuff contributing.
Richt feels good about his fullbacks Brannan Southerland, and redshirt freshmen Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier, who Richt nicknamed “Mutt and Jeff”. With a young offensive line, Southerland’s blocking will be very important. Junior inside linebacker Marcus Washington’s knees have responded well enough that he is backing up Dannell Ellerbe. Former quarterback Eric Zeier will join Scott Howard for radio broadcasts on road games.
Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez announced that only two freshmen—linebacker Rennie Curran and cornerback Vance Cuff—would see action against Oklahoma State. On offense, Sturdivant, Clint Boling, Justin Anderson, and tight end Bruce Figgins should play. Brian Mimbs and Drew Butler are battling for the punting job. Presently, Sean Bailey, Mikey Henderson and Mohammed Massaquoi are the starters at receiver. Mike Moore, Tony Wilson, A J Bryant and Kris Durham are pushing for playing time. Thomas Brown could be the starter at tailback.
Florida State’s offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher named Drew Weatherford as the starting quarterback for the Clemson game. He also said reserve quarterback Xavier Lee would see playing time. The Nole offensive line was overwhelmed by the Nole defense in Saturday’s scrimmage only two days after the unit provided enough protection for the quarterbacks to throw for a combined 25- of- 36 for 348 yards. The defense had seven sacks. The offense had some bright spots. For the second straight scrimmage, receiver De’Cody Fagg caught a short pass, reversed field and outran the secondary. Antone Smith rushed for 85 yards on nine carries. Weatherford was only 5- of- 15 for 147 yards and Lee was 5- of- 13 for 35 yards. Offensive line coach Rick Trickett had the first team line doing up-downs while the second team was on the field. Former FSU defensive tackle Aaron Jones is starting for Division I-AA Eastern Kentucky this season.
Nole former quarterback D’Vontrey Richardson has volunteered to move to receiver. Junior offensive lineman Dumaka Atkins has been held out of practice because of a left knee injury. Freshman Rodney Hudson has worked with the first team offense in place of senior Jacky Claude at right guard. Center Ryan McMahon has held down the center position. Offensive line coach Rick Trickett is not afraid to replace a veteran with a younger player to get better results. Former offensive lineman Matt Hardrick is transferring to USF.
In Tuesday’s scrimmage, Weatherford was 10- of- 19 for 135 yards. Weatherford has 23 starts and has thrown 29 picks. Lee was 6- of- 13 for 53 yards. Christian Ponder was 5- of- 5 for 61 yards against the reserves. Receiver Preston Parker had two catches for 54 yards.
Miami President Donna Shalala and the Board of Trustees have announced that the Hurricanes will move from the Orange Bowl to Dolphin Stadium. City of Miami officials have agreed to let Miami out of its Orange Bowl lease before its 2009 expiration. Freshman receiver DeMarcus VanDyke has been moved to cornerback.
Hurricane quarterback Kyle Wright missed Monday’s scrimmage due to a hyper- extended knee. Shannon said Tuesday that Wright is fine. Receiver George Robinson has left the team. Junior offensive lineman John Rochford has gotten plenty of snaps with the first team fueling speculation that he might start. Coach Randy Shannon said he would release a depth chart on Tuesday.
Virginia Tech quarterback Ike Whitaker has moved to receiver. Freshman Tyrod Taylor has moved to backup quarterback behind Sean Glennon. The offensive line is struggling with depth after projected starter after right tackle Ed Wang broke his leg two weeks ago.
Clemson junior receiver Terrance Ashe has caught two touchdown passes in two off the three Tiger scrimmages. Junior safety Mike Hamlin, a Jim Thorpe candidate, has performed well in camp. Junior linebacker Antonio Clay is backing up junior Courtney Vincent. Clay, who missed all of spring due to depression, is down to 228 pounds. In 2005, Clemson finished No. 20 in total defense under coordinator Vic Koenning. Last year, they finished No. 15. This year Koenning wants a top ten finish. Cullen Harper continues to be the No. 1 quarterback despite a strong spring from freshman Willy Korn.
In Tuesday’s scrimmage, five running backs averaged 5.4 yards per carry. Korn was 9- of- 16 for 134 yards. Harper was 4- of- 12 for 41 yards. Nick Watkins was dominating from his linebacker position. Bowden said 8-10 freshmen would play including H-back Chad Diehl and linebacker Scotty Cooper.
Wake Forest had a scrimmage cut short by thunderstorms on Wednesday. Quarterback Riley Skinner was 10- of- 12 for 119 yards. Junior running back Micah Andrews caught a short touchdown pass. Kenny Moore, who played tailback last year, is back to his original position of receiver. Sam Swank had three field goals. A total of 13 running backs carried the ball. John Tereshinski gives Skinner a big target at tight end.
North Carolina coach Butch Davis said the passing game has improved greatly in the lat two weeks. He will use the tight ends (Richard Quinn and Ryan Taylor) more in the offense this season. Freshman defensive lineman Marvin Austin has done well. Four tailbacks—sophomore Richie Rich, freshman Anthony Elzy, Ryan Houston and Johnny White-- are vying for playing time. UNC has not had a 1,000- yard rusher since 1997.
Boston College’s defense featuring players such as B J Raji, DeJuan Tribble, JoLonn Dunbar, Nick Larkin and Tyronne Pruitt have been the highlight of camp. Quarterback Matt Ryan has worked well with offensive coordinator Steve Logan. Receiver Kevin Challenger, Brandon Robinson and Justin Jarvis have performed well.
TCU coach Gary Patterson’s son, Josh, will be deployed to Iraq in December. He is a tank driver in the army.
Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops have named Sam Bradford (6-5, 213) as the starting quarterback over Joey Halzle and freshman Keith Nichol.
Wisconsin has named fifth-year senior Tyler Donovan as the starting quarterback ahead of junior Allan Evridge.
