GEORGIA: Cornerback Donavon Baldwin and fullback Fred Muzenmaier were arrested on alcohol related incidents over the weekend. Baldwin has been suspended for the Georgia Southern opener in 2008 and Muzenmaier is out for first two games including Central Michigan. Coach Mark Richt has hired former FSU assistant John Lily to coach tight ends.

The top two recruits left for the Bulldogs are Neiko Lipscomb (6-2, 175), a three-star defensive back from Tucker, Ga. (he is interested also in Auburn) and Bobby Massie (6-8, 335), a four-star offensive tackle from Lynchburg, Va. Clemson, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee are recruiting him. However, both recruits could be sign-and-place players. Massie, who is also looking at Clemson and North Carolina, will likely end up at Hargrave Military Academy.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who has moved six times since 2005, has left the Gamecocks to take the same position with his friend, Mike Smith, who was just named the new coach with the Atlanta Falcons. Coach Steve Spurrier has hired former Arkansas defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson to replace him. Tight end Nick Prochak broke his leg last Friday after being hit on his scooter by a car. He will miss spring practice after having a rod insert into his leg. Spurrier was pleased when 90 players showed up for the first preseason workout. Freshman three-star quarterback Reid McCollum (6-4, 195) has returned home to Summerville, S.C. after enrolling early. He has endured two tragedies of losing an assistant coach and his girlfriend in fires during the past few months.

Mike Triglia (6-4, 234), a two-star tight end from The Bolles (Fla.) School in Jacksonville, is commitment No. 20 for the Gamecocks. Glenn Harbin (6-5, 245), a four-star defensive end from McGill-Toolen (Ala.) in Mobile, visited Monday. He also visited North Carolina over the weekend. Harbin said South Carolina is his leader. Florida, FSU, North Carolina and Alabama are also recruiting him.

ALABAMA: The 25th anniversary of Alabama Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s death is Saturday, Jan. 26. Jeff Brohm, the Louisville quarterbacks coach, Shawn Watson, the former Nebraska offensive coordinator, have taken their name out of consideration for the vacant offensive coordinator position. Valdosta State coach Chris Hatcher said he is not a candidate. Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements expressed little interest in some reports. Scot Loeffler, the former Michigan assistant who interviewed last week, has taken a job with the Detroit Lions. Mike Schultz, the offensive coordinator at TCU, Bryan Harsin, the OC at Boise State and LSU’s Gary Crowton have been mentioned as possible candidates.

Jerrell Harris (6-4, 215), a four-star linebacker from Gasden, Ala., visited Auburn over the weekend. He has visited Alabama and Clemson. He is set to visit Southern Cal and Tennessee over the next two weekends. Alonzo Lawrence (6-1, 187), a four-star defensive back from Lucedale, Ms., is visiting Miami this weekend. His top three schools are Ole Miss, Alabama and Miami. He changed his mind from visiting LSU and decided to trip to Miami. Mark Ingram (5-10, 195), a four-star athlete from Flint, Mi., is looking at Alabama, Michigan State, Arizona State, Wisconsin and Iowa. Robert Quinn (6-5, 245), a four-star defensive end from North Charleston, SC, is looking at Alabama, Auburn, North Carolina and perhaps South Carolina. A Gainesville Sun report said Julio Jones was sent home early during his Florida visit last week because he was recruiting for Oklahoma. That report has been corrected to say that Jones stayed the entire visit, had a good time, but did not recruit anyone for Oklahoma. Jones and Tide commitment Burton Scott, a five-star athlete from Vigor, Ala., visit Oklahoma this weekend.

AUBURN: Eric Smith (5-10, 240), a three-star running back from Seffner Armwood, Fla., has committed to Auburn. Clemson, FSU and Nebraska are recruiting him. Enrique Davis (5-11, 220), a five-star running back from Hargrave Military Academy, met with offensive coordinator Tony Franklin this week. Davis, who had decommitted from Auburn after Franklin was hired, said the Tigers are back in his list of favorites along with Tennessee, Oregon, Ole Miss and Maryland.

TENNESSEE: The Vols are ranked No. 43 in the Rivals.com recruiting rankings. Tennessee has no commitments from Rivals100 list. Tennessee has 11 total commitments. This time last year they had 25. They are looking at: Antoine McClain (6-6, 317), a four-star offensive lineman from Alabama. Auburn and Clemson are pushing for him. Marcus Witherspoon (6-2, 215), a four-star linebacker from N. J., is down to Michigan and Tennessee. He is a Michigan verbal. Keith Wells (6-5, 215), a linebacker/defensive end from Gainesville, Ga., said he will choose between Tennessee and Ohio State next week. He originally committed to FSU. Coach Phil Fulmer made his team run at 6 a.m. in freezing temperatures a few days after freshman running back Daryl Vereen was arrested for public intoxication early Monday morning.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey has taken his name of consideration for the South Alabama job. Defensive back/receiver Anthony Summers is transferring to Central Arkansas and receiver Alex Carpenter is leaving to enroll at Northeast Mississippi JUCO. Defensive end Demario Bobo, who started two of 12 games last year, announced that he is going to the NFL. The State coaching staff didn’t know about this revelation until this week.

OLE MISS: Jevan Snead gave his first interview since the Houston Nutt era began last week. He was overjoyed that offensive lineman Michael Oher (6-6, 322) returned to school. Snead had recent knee surgery that went well. He will be healthy for spring drills.

Former Rebel coach Ed Orgeron has taken a defensive position on the Saints’ staff.

LSU: Around 25,000 fans braved near 30 degree wind chill to celebrate LSU’s national championship Saturday. DeAndre Brown (6-6, 208), a five-star receiver from Ocean Springs, Miss., has cancelled his visit to Ole Miss. Much of the speculation is that he will sign with LSU. Patrick Johnson (6-1, 193), a five-star defensive back from Pompano Beach (Fla.) Ely, will not enroll early at LSU due to not having a transcript from his school. His said that his ACT scored, which had been flagged early after a jump from 16 to 22, has been cleared. He will arrive on campus on June 5.

KENTUCKY: Offensive coordinator Joker Phillips downplayed the idea that he would be the next black coach in the SEC after Rich Brooks retires. Brooks was the first coach in the league to have two black coordinators in Brooks and defensive coordinator Steve Brown.

FLORIDA: The Gators are No. 1 on the Rivals.com recruiting rankings. Florida was No. 16 on Jan. 5 in the rankings. Florida is the only school to have four five –star prospects. After Jan. 5, lineman Matt Patchan, running back Jeffery Demps, and linebacker Lerentee McCray, among others, committed. Meyer has done well in shoring up holes at receiver, cornerback, linebacker and defensive line. Many recruits have mentioned what a nice job Director of Football Operations Troy Starr has done. Florida has zoomed up the ladder despite the loss of assistants Stan Drayton and Doc Holliday. Former Michigan secondary coach Vance Bedford has interviewed and remains a candidate.

Ramon Buchanan (6-1, 190), a four-star linebacker from Palm (Fla.) Bay, decommitted from Miami and committed to Florida. Former players Mike Degory, Joe Cohen and Reggie Nelson have come from Palm Bay. Jamie Harper (6-0, 210) a four-star running back from Trinity Christian in Jacksonville, didn’t visit Florida because his friend and teammate was denied the chance to stay with him in his motel room. Harper said he probably won’t visit Florida and may not even visit FSU. He visits Miami the first weekend of Feb. Illinois, Clemson, FSU and Miami are his favorites.

Omar Hunter (6-1, 295), a five-star defensive tackle from Buford, Ga., is the latest commitment. William Green (6-4, 215), a four-star outside linebacker from Spain Park, Ala. Green said Florida is his leader, but he is visiting Clemson next weekend. Green said he is shutting down the process and not talking to anyone. Milton Knox (5-8, 192), a four-star running back from Lake Balboa, Calif., is the only other running back possibility for the Gators. Florida could still have an outside chance at Mobile players Glenn Harbin, a defensive end, Mark Barron, an athlete, and Destin Hood. Barron and Hood are soft Alabama verbals. Brandon Harris, T J Bryant, T J Lawrence, a receiver from Lake Kathleen and Jamie Harper are still considered possibilities.

Florida is still investigating any secondary violations on whether or not Urban Meyer was involved with any improper communication with football recruit Carl Moore’s girlfriend, Florida gymnast Maranda Smith. Moore enrolled at UF earlier this month. The issues for Myer might be recruiting athletes in more than one sport and staying within the recruiting calendar. There also reports that quarterback Tim Tebow was handed the phone shortly after winning the Heisman Trophy.

SOUTH ALABAMA: Former Texas A & M coach Dennis Franchione and Pittsburgh Steelers assistant head coach John Mitchell have emerged as two more candidates for the fledgling South Alabama job. Alabama’s Kevin Steele, Auburn’s Eddie Gran, Birmingham Southern head coach Joey Jones, Clemson receiver coach Dabo Swinney, and Central Florida assistant David Kelly have interviewed.

FLORIDA STATE: The Noles need offensive linemen and tight ends. They must replace three starting offensive linemen. The biggest target is Josh Jenkins (6-3, 282), a Rivals 250 prospect from Vienna, W. V., who is being wooed by Ohio State and West Virginia. Rhonne Sanderson (6-4, 280), a two-star offensive lineman from Tampa (Fla.) Plant, is a sleeper in the class.

Zebrie Sanders (6-6, 275), a four-star offensive lineman from Clayton, Ohio, has committed to FSU. LSU and West Virginia were among his finalists. He is commitment No. 18. Lily’s departure from Tallahassee doesn’t affect many recruits. Jabaris Little (6-4, 240), a four-star tight end commitment from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln, said Lilly’s leaving doesn’t prevent him from coming to FSU. Correy Surrency (6-5, 210), a four star receiver from El Camino Community (Calif.) College, also said he was still coming to FSU despite a close relationship with Lilly. However, Dwayne Allen (6-4, 243), a four-star tight end from Fayetteville, NC and a commitment to Georgia, said he is staying with his commitment to the Bulldogs, especially with Lilly coming to Athens. Jimbo Fisher might take over Lily’s job as recruiting coordinator. Garrett Faircloth (6-6, 260), a two-star offensive lineman from The Bolles School, is the latest commitment for the Noles. Memphis, Ole Miss, Vandy, and UCF offered him.

FSU officials start interviews next week with possible athletic director candidates. They are still taking applications. Former FSU player Martin Mayhew, now a senior VP with the Detroit Lions, former Florida Marlins President Donald Smiley and Wayne Hogan, a Georgia Tech associate athletic director will interview.

MIAMI: Ben Jones (6-6, 295), a four-star offensive lineman from Miami Northwestern, cancelled his visit to LSU. He is expected to visit Miami this weekend. He is favoring Miami and Clemson. Five players-linebacker Arthur Brown, kicker Jake Wieclaw, quarterback Cannon Smith, fullback Patrick Hill and tight John Calhoun are already enrolled. Miami Northwestern players-quarterback Jacory Harris, defensive tackle Marcus Fortson, linebacker Sean Spence, and receiver Aldarius Johnson have enrolled. Hollywood Chaminade linebacker Jordan Futch might also enroll early.

Jamie Harper from Trinity Christian is scheduled to visit on Feb. 2. He is visiting FSU this weekend. His close friend, Daniel Andrews, is a Clemson commitment. He is also considering Clemson and Florida State. Tommy Streeter (6-6, 200), a four-star receiver from Miami Northwestern, has visited South Carolina, Boston College and Oregon. He is scheduled to visit Ole Miss on Feb. 2.

Washington Associate Athletic Director Jeff Compher has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Paul Dee as AD. He has worked at Western Carolina and Vanderbilt.
