GEORGIA: (25 verbals) Bulldog coaches have shown an interest in Neiko Lipscomb (6-2, 175), a three-star defensive back from Tucker, Ga. He is visiting Alabama this weekend. Auburn is recruiting him hard also.
Bulldog commitment Toby Jackson (6-4, 244), a defensive tackle from Griffin, Ga., visited Southern Cal last weekend. He said after the visit that he was still signing with Georgia. Bulldog commitment Xavier Avery (5-11, 185), an athlete from Cedar Grove, Ga., tripped to Oklahoma. Avery, who could be a high selection in the Major League Baseball draft, said Wednesday night that he will likely sign with Georgia.
Another Bulldog commitment Dwayne Allen (6-4, 243), a four-star tight end from Fayetteville, NC, is being hotly pursued by Florida State. He had been recruited by John Lily, before the former FSU recruiting coordinator went to Georgia. He visits Virginia Tech this weekend. Tech, North Carolina, Clemson, FSU, and Georgia are all involved.
Terrelle Pryor (6-6, 235), a five-star quarterback from Jeanette, Pa., said he might delay his decision until after signing day so that he could visit Oregon. High school seniors have until April 1 to sign a letter of intent. Ohio State and Michigan are considered his top two choices with Penn State and Oregon as possibilities.
Since the end of last season, there have been 34 moves involving assistant coaches in the SEC, counting Ellis Johnson twice. Johnson is currently the South Carolina defensive coordinator, twice. Out of 24 positions, there will be 11 new coordinators this season. Out of the 12 schools, eight will have at least one coordinator. The longest term coordinators are Tennessee’s John Chavis 17 years, Vandy’s Ted Cain and Bruce Fowler both 7 years, Mississippi State’s Woody McCorvey 5 years, Georgia’s Willie Martinez 4, Florida’s Charlie Strong/Greg Mattison and Dan Mullen 4.
ALABAMA: Former Fresno State offensive coordinator Jim McElwain has accepted the same position at Alabama. Fresno State was No. 34 in scoring this past season averaging 34 points per game and No. 51 in total yards averaging 406 ypg. Rutgers offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach John McNulty was mentioned for the same position. He spent five seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Colquitt County High School in Georgia has hired former Hoover coach Rush Propst. Mountain Brook quarterback Morgan Ogilvie, the son of former Tide great Major Ogilvie, has been invited to walk-on at Alabama.
Glen Harbin (6-5, 245), a four-star defensive tackle from Mobile, Ala., did not visit anywhere this past weekend. Harbin, who has visited South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama, committed to the Tide on Thursday. His main two schools were Alabama and South Carolina. Marcel (6-4, 277) and Demerius Dareus (6-5, 245), both three-star defensive linemen from Huffman, Ala., have been offered by Auburn, Alabama, and North Carolina. Demerius might start off at a junior college. Julio Jones (6-4, 215), a five-star receiver from Foley, Ala., said his final list is Alabama, Florida, FSU, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. He did visit Oklahoma last weekend and will not visit Texas Tech this weekend. Antoine McClain (6-6, 317), an offensive lineman from Anniston (Ala.) High, is down to Auburn and Tennessee. He is visiting LSU this weekend.
Jerrell Harris (6-2, 220), a linebacker from Gasden (Ala.) High, is looking at Alabama, Auburn, Clemson Tennessee and USC. He could come down to an Alabama-Auburn battle. Alonzo Lawrence (6-1, 187), a defensive back from Lucedale, Ms, has committed to Alabama over Ole Miss and Miami. T. J. Bryant (6-1, 175), a cornerback from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln High, is looking at Alabama, LSU, Florida, FSU, Miami and USC. It will be hard to beat FSU or Miami for Bryant.
AUBURN: Tiger officials have agreed to move the West Virginia game originally scheduled for Sept. 6 to a Thursday night Oct. 23. The Southern Miss game originally set for Oct. 18 has been moved to Sept. 6.
Antoine McClain (6-6, 317), a four-star offensive lineman from Anniston, Ala., visited Auburn last weekend. Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Tennessee are his finalists. The Tigers recent commitments are: Andre Wadley (6-2, 245), a three-star defensive lineman from Hernando, Ms. (Mississippi State and Tennessee), Jomarcus Savage
(6-2, 260), a three-star defensive end/linebacker from J. O. Johnson in Huntsville, Ala. He chose Auburn over Tennessee. Brandon Smith (6-1, 185), a two-star athlete from Williamson High in Mobile, committed to the Tigers over the weekend. He will begin his career at a junior college.
ARKANSAS: A deal could be finalized in the next month to schedule a game with Texas A & M in Dallas beginning in 2009.
KENTUCKY: Wildcat officials are looking at another team to replace Temple who has asked out of a two- game deal. Temple pulled out of a schedule game because they were joining the MAC. The MAC is trying to find Kentucky an opponent.
TENNESSEE: Offensive lineman Anthony Parker was arrested over the weekend for disorderly conduct. He is the fourth player to be arrested in the past two weeks. Gerald Jones and Ahmad Paige were arrested two weeks ago for marijuana possession while driving a car with a recruit in the back seat. Freshman Daryl Vereen was arrested for public intoxication last week.
Marlon Walls (6-2, 222), a four-star linebacker from Olive Branch, Ms., has committed to the Vols. Auburn, Louisville, Ole Miss and Miss State are recruiting him. Enrique Davis (5-11, 220), a five-star running back from Hargrave Military Academy, is visiting Tennessee this weekend. He visited Oregon last weekend. His schools of interest are Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Maryland and Auburn.
SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Steve Spurrier will be awarded $1 million if he stays four more seasons. D. J. Donley, a receiver from Georgia Tech, plans on transferring to South Carolina and enrolling in March. He will have three years to play. Donley caught eight passes for 101 yards and a touchdown in Tech’s bowl game.
T J Lawrence (6-2, 190), a four-star receiver from Lakeland, Fla., and Tommy Streeter (6-6, 200), a four-star receiver from Miami (Fla.) Northwestern, are priority recruits for South Carolina. Lawrence visited Michigan over the weekend. He has already visited South Carolina, Florida and Virginia Tech. Streeter visited South Florida over the weekend. He is visiting Miami this weekend.
FLORIDA: Chaz Sutton (6-4, 230), a defensive tackle from Jenkins High in Savannah, Ga., will not sign with Florida after he was told that he would not qualify. In Urban Meyer’s first three signing classes, 71- of- 72 players qualified. Sutton is visiting South Carolina this weekend where he could be a sign- and- place player.
William Green (6-4, 215), a four-star linebacker from Hoover, Ala., committed to Florida on Wednesday. T. J. Lawrence (6-2, 190), a four-star receiver from Lakeland Kathleen, will announce on signing day from a list of Florida, South Carolina, Michigan and Virginia Tech. Gator commitment Raymon Buchanan, a four-star safety from Melbourne Palm (Fla.) Bay, is visiting Miami this weekend. He switched from Miami to Florida a few weeks ago.
Gator defensive lineman Torrey Davis was cited for underage drinking on Jan. 19. The freshman played in 11 games and had eight tackles.
MISSISSIPPI STATE: Despite winning eight games, State officials did not raise ticket prices. State averaged 49,295 per home game, breaking the 2002 record by 1,004. State’s SEC home games this year are against Auburn, Vandy, Kentucky, Arkansas and Ole Miss.
OLE MISS: Coach Houston Nutt said Jerrell Powe is working hard in the classroom and could be in Oxford by the summer if he has a good spring academically. Powe is a heralded defensive lineman who has tried for at least two years to become eligible. Former Auburn player, Patrick Trahan (6-3, 225), who is a three-star linebacker at Northwest Mississippi Community College, has verbally committed to Ole Miss. He played his freshman year at Auburn before transferring.
LSU: The Tigers have asked ESPN to help them fill a Sept. 13 opening on their schedule with a team from a BCS conference. ESPN wanted LSU to travel for the game, but Tiger officials refused because of road games against Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas. They also want to schedule a game in Houston, possibly at Reliant Stadium, because there is a big Tiger fan base in the area. The Tigers are waiting on DeAndre Brown (6-6, 208), a five-star receiver from Ocean Springs, Ms., who is choosing from LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Auburn.
SOUTH ALABAMA: John Mitchell, the assistant head coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has removed his name from consideration. Sparky Woods, the former South Carolina coach and SEC assistant, has interviewed. David Kelly, an assistant at Central Florida has removed his name from consideration.
CLEMSON: The Tigers could sign as many as seven players from the Jacksonville, Fla., area next week. Bartram Trail’s Kyle Parker and Xavier Brewer, Bolles’ long snapper Matt Skinner, St. Augustine safeties Rashard Hall and Carlton Lewis, Trinity Christian safety Daniel Andrews are already committed. Jamie Harper might be No. 7.
In the past 28 years, Clemson has signed 21 players from Jacksonville. Some of the players are Terrence Flagler, Terrance Rhoulac, Brian Dawkins, Patrick Sapp, Rod Gardner, Patrick McKenny and Vince Robinson. Mike McIntosh switched from Clemson to Florida before transferring to Georgia Southern where he caught 14 passes last year. Former Tiger coach Danny Ford started the Clemson success in Jacksonville when he assigned former McClenny High School coach Chuck Reedy to recruit the area. Currently Dabo Swinney recruits Jacksonville. Rick Stockstill recruited the area before Swinney.
FLORIDA STATE: FSU commitments this week are: A J Alexander (6-0, 180), a four-star athlete from Altoona, Pa. (North Carolina, Tennessee are recruiting him); Rhonne Sanderson (6-4, 280), a two-star offensive lineman from Tampa (Fla.) Plant; Josh Gehres (6-3, 190), a two-star receiver from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln. Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan State have offered him.
LSU is making a strong push for Jermaine Thomas (6-1, 190), a three-star running back from Jacksonville, Fla. Thomas is a LSU commitment. Thomas still said he’s a FSU commitment. Ed Imeokparia (6-0, 188), a three-star defensive back from New Jersey, also visited last weekend. T J Bryant (6-1, 175), a four-star cornerback from Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln, chooses signing day from a list of Miami, FSU and Southern Cal. FSU is still waiting on Ryan Baker (6-0, 220), an outside linebacker from Blountstown, Fla. He is a LSU verbal.
Jamie Harper (6-1, 227), a four-star running back from Trinity Christian, visited FSU last weekend and is visiting Miami this weekend. He is down to Illinois, FSU, Clemson, and Miami. Dwayne Allen (6-4, 243), a four-star tight end from Fayetteville, N. C., (a Georgia verbal) is also a possible signee He is very close to former FSU and current Georgia coach John Lily. Carlton Jones (5-11, 220), a two-star running back from Tampa (Fla.) Middleton, will visit FSU this weekend. Jones, a Toledo commitment, ran for 1,200 yards as a junior.
Utah State’s Randy Spetman is the fourth candidate that FSU officials want to interview for the athletic director position. Georgia Tech associate AD Wayne Hogan interviewed on Monday. Detroit Lions executive Martin Mayhew and Don Smiley, the former president of the Florida Marlins interviewed this week. There is some speculation that FSU will have an open date to begin the season on Aug. 30 before playing Western Carolina and UT Chattanooga. Sept. 20 is the first ACC game at home before playing Colorado in Jacksonville on Sept. 27.
MIAMI: (26 verbals) Jordan Futch (6-3, 202), a four-star linebacker commitment from Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade, was not able to enroll early due to some academic issues. The Canes are waiting on Brandon Harris (5-10, 175), a four-star cornerback from Booker T. (Fla.) Washington. Ohio State and Florida are the main competition.
Nick Perry (6-4, 230), a five –star linebacker/defensive end from Detroit (Michigan) King, visits Miami this weekend. Coach Randy Shannon speaks at Perry’s high school banquet tonight. Perry has visited Michigan State, Southern Cal and Michigan.
Laron Byrd (6-4, 205), a receiver from Boutte (La.) Hahnville, is down to Miami or Auburn. Tiger coach Tommy Tuberville visited him Wednesday. Byrd announces on signing day.
Vaughn Telemaque (6-2, 190), a four-star safety from Long Beach Poly in California, announced Thursday night that he chose Miami over Southern Cal. Michigan, Rutgers and Oregon were also recruiting him.
Corey Liuget (6-3, 260), a four-star defensive end from Hialeh, Fla., decides between Miami, LSU and Illinois. He is the No. 7 defensive tackle according to Rivals.com.
Ben Jones (6-6, 295), a four-star offensive lineman from Miami (Fla.) Northwestern, will choose between Miami and Clemson.
VIRGINIA: Defensive coordinator Mike London left to become the coach at Richmond after Dave Clawson became the offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
WAKE FOREST: Defensive coordinator Dean Hood left his position to become the coach at I-AA Eastern Kentucky.
ACC SCHEDULE PROBLEMS: Yellow Jacket officials have been trying for three months to replace Army on the 2008 schedule. Army officials pulled out of this year’s game last season. Tech might have to schedule not one, but two Division I-AA schools. So, Clemson, FSU and Georgia Tech could end up with two Division I-AA schools. Virginia Tech also has an opening which could make four. Michigan needed a game to fill up its schedule last year. ESPN offered to match them against Hawaii in Ann Arbor for television, but Michigan refused and scheduled Appalachian State. What helps schedule makers this season is to have 14 weeks between the opener on Aug. 30 to the conference championship games on Dec. 6. Usually there are 13 weeks to a season to get in 12 games.
SEC HOOPS
TENNESSEE (18-2, 5-1) AT MISSISSIPPI STATE (14-6, 5-1) (SATURDAY): Guard Chris Lofton is heating up. After scoring 22 points against Kentucky, he scorched Georgia for 27 points. Lofton has 374 career 3-pointers. Tennessee had lost 16- of- 17 in Tuscaloosa including four straight before winning Tuesday night. The Vols lead the SEC in 3-point defense. In the last four games, Tennessee is limiting its opponents to only 16% shooting. However, they are No. 9 in the SEC in free-throw shooting.
MISSISSIPPI STATE: After winning nine straight games, the State defense allowed Arkansas 78 points, the most since Clemson scored 84 last November in a blowout loss. Arkansas outrebounded State by six points. State committed 22 turnovers. Last Saturday, The Bulldogs beat Ole Miss for the ninth straight time. Charles Rhodes hit 12- of- 14 field goals and had six rebounds. Guard Ben Hansbrough is out one to three weeks with mono. State has won four of five SEC games by double-digits. Jarvis Varnado is averaging five blocks per game.
SOUTH CAROLINA (10-10, 2-4) AT OLE MISS (16-3, 3-3) (Saturday): The Gamecocks have lost six times after trailing by five or more points at halftime. Guard Devon Downey scored 24 points in the loss to Kentucky. Alex English, a former Gamecock player and current NBA assistant with Toronto, has been mentioned as a possibility to replace Dave Odom.
OLE MISS: The Rebels beat Vanderbilt Wednesday night. They have won 10 straight home games. Eniel Polynice had 18 points and Chris Warren scored 20 in the win. In the loss to Mississippi State last Saturday, the Rebels struggled to guard the perimeter, the guards panicked in the second half and they missed Jermey Parnell. The Rebels are below .500 in the SEC.
FLORIDA (18-3, 5-1) AT ARKANSAS (15-5, 4-2) (Saturday): Hog senior Charles Thomas (10 ppg, 5 rpg) is back after a one-game suspension for Mississippi State. Patrick Beverley grabbed a career high 15 rebounds to go along with 14 points in the win at LSU last Saturday. He leads the entire league in SEC games averaging 10 rpg. Arkansas point guard Gary Ervin is a State transfer. He is averaging 11 points and five rebounds against his old team. The Hogs have a big three game road stand against State, Florida and Ole Miss.
LSU (8-12, 1-5) AT ALABAMA (12-9, 1-5) (SATURDAY): Marcus Thornton scored 38 points in the win over Auburn that broke an eight-game losing streak. The Tigers have really struggled with injuries. They suited up only nine players in the loss to Arkansas. Forward Tasmin Mitchell is out with a stress fracture in his foot. Center Chris Johnson is out with a broken hand. Dameon Mason is out for the year due to academics. LSU is off to its worst start in three decades.
ALABAMA: The Tide reversed a trend of poor 3-point shooting (5- of- 34 in the two previous games) against Auburn hitting 12- of- 25 from the arc. Richard Hendrix had 20 points and eight rebounds. Alabama did a better job of defending the three (Auburn shot only 6- of- 22 from 3-point range). Rico Pickett scored 17 points off the bench. Senario Hillman added eight points. Alabama is last in the league averaging 59% from the free throw line. Coach Mark Gottfried refused to discuss a halftime discussion between his wife, Elizabeth, and Birmingham talk show host Paul Finebaum at the Auburn game.
AUBURN (12-7, 2-4) AT VANDY (17-4, 2-4) (Saturday): The Commodores allowed a, 23-0, run in the first half that put the game away for Florida. Vandy has lost four straight road games in SEC play. A J Ogilvy had a season low nine points and only four rebounds. He and Shaun Foster were limited to only 16 total points. Guard Jermaine Beal leads the SEC in assist/turnover ratio.
KENTUCKY (3-2, 9-9) AT GEORGIA (SATURDAY): Joe Crawford (16 ppg) is limited because of a plantar fasciitis (a sore foot). The Wildcats have had six players out with injuries this season. Wildcat freshman Patrick Patterson scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win over South Carolina. Patterson, the SEC freshman player of the week, averaged 21 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks last week in wins over Tennessee and South Carolina. Ramel Bradley was named the player of the week for Jan. 21-27. He averaged 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists in wins over Tennessee and South Carolina.
GEORGIA (11-7, 2-3): The Bulldogs have struggled all year due to the early loss of leading scorer Takais Brown and Mike Mercer. The Bulldogs are last in the league in several offensive categories.
