ATHLETIC DORMS: In 1991, the NCAA outlawed athletic dorms saying student-athletes must be housed the same as non-athletes. Now, no more than 49% of a dorm, wing or even a floor of university housing can be athletes. Many coaches say taking athletes out of dorms or one contained area was a mistake because it took away some of the control that coaches have.

ATHLETIC DIRECTORS: With the retirement of Skip Bertman from LSU on Monday, for the first time since 1992, there won’t be a single athletic director who has been the coach of a major college sport. Alabama’s Mal Moore, 69, who is in his ninth year as AD, is the only one who once worked as a full-time, on-field assistant. Former Auburn coach Pat Dye was the last man to hold a full- time head coaching position and also served as AD. Florida’s Jeremy Foley is the highest paid AD in the nation making $ 1 million per year. He has a new 11 year contract.

ASSISTANT SALARIES: Every assistant coach in the SEC makes at least six figures according to the Knoxville News Sentinel. Last year, LSU has the two highest paid coordinators in Gary Crowton and Bo Pelini, who made $400,000 each.

ALABAMA: Plans are being made, but have not been announced to enlarge Bryant Denny Stadium to over 101,000 seats. Only Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium will be larger.

FLORIDA: Gator signee Jeffrey Demps ran a 10.01 in the 100 meters at the U. S. Olympic track and field finals last Saturday in Oregon. Tyson Gay won the race with a 9.77 time.

LSU: Bertman’s tenure ends Monday. He will be moving to a new job as a fundraiser. Former Duke AD Joe Alleva takes over for him.

GEORGIA: Coach Mark Richt addressed rumors pertaining to running back Knowshon Moreno. He said there was no problem between the two of them. Richt also said Moreno also went with a chaperone to the 52nd annual Playboy photo shoot and awards dinner. Freshman John Knox’s improvement has been so substantial that he could push sophomore Quintin Banks for the backup safety spot behind C J Byrd. Know was 197 last year and is 217 this season. Richt also said backup quarterback Joe Cox is one of the more underrated players he has ever coached.

MIAMI: Mike James (5-11, 211), a four-star running back from (Davenport, Fla.) Polk County, committed to the Canes over the weekend. He plans on being an early enrollee. Purdue, South Florida, Illinois, Alabama, UConn, and Louisville are among the schools to offer him.
