Looking at the teams that are in the Super Bowl, the task in front of the Jaguars looks obvious. Defense got both Carolina and New England to the big game, and that’s the direction the Jaguars are headed. Jack Del Rio is building the defense from the middle out, using Marcus Stroud and John Henderson as the centerpieces, with Mike Peterson behind them.
I was in Tampa over the weekend and ran into Keenan McCardell, the former Jagaurs, and now Bucs wide receiver. “They can win,” Keenan told me when he brought up the Jaguars future. “They need a cover corner, and need one bad.” I figure Keenan would know, having faced the Jaguars earlier this year. “It’s a good year for corners in free-agency,” Keenan explained, “so if they want to spend some money, they can get better fast.” “What about the draft,” I asked. “Naw man, they need somebody right now, they can’t wait,” Keenan was quick to answer.
He agreed the Jaguars should use their high draft choice to take a defensive end, and spend their money elsewhere. “They need more production out of their high dollar players, and they’ll be OK.”
And how about the Bucs? “We’ll be allright; we just need some work up front. Jon (Gruden) wasn’t happy with what was going on on the offensive line, and how those guys played. If they get that right and (Joe) Jurevicieus is back, we’ll be back.”
Sitting next to Keenan for the three years he was the co-host of “The End Zone” I found that Keenan does tell the truth, and sometimes it’s just between the lines.. So a Bucs/Jaguars Super Bowl is possible according to Keenan’s analysis. But just like any other team, those two have to stay healthy and get the things right that are not working. By the way, Keenan was on his way to play in Derek Jeter’s charity golf tournament in Tampa. “Then I’m back to Houston and on to Hawaii.”
In case it slipped by you, Keenan was named to the Pro Bowl as a replacement for injured Terrell Owens.
I talked with current End Zone host Kyle Brady the other day and he was excited about his upcoming television work. Brady was been selected by FOX for a two game trial as an analyst in NFL Europe. Brady will do games in Cologne, Germany and Amsterdam. “It’s my first time in Europe, so it’ll be lots of fun,” Kyle explained. The Jaguars have a million dollar plus bonus due to Brady on March 1, so if they’re going to release him, he’ll know before then. “But I want to stay here; I want to be a part of what’s going on.” Brady’s analyst tryout is in May, so he’ll know his future by then. “I’m hoping to not miss any of the passing camps Coach Del Rio has planned."
