Faster, bigger, stronger, and definitely younger is how to describe the Jaguars after three days of mini-camp. All of those things were evident as the team went through five practices Friday, Saturday and Sunday. "I thought it was an excellent start. Guys came in ready and we had five outstanding practices that got a little better as the weekend went on," said head coach Jack Del Rio. "We know where we need to get better and where we need to improve technique. We are going to practice the things we have to do well on Sundays."
Del Rio doesn’t seem to be too locked in on conditioning and small things. His head coaching style is evolving as somebody who wants to see the big picture. That comment about “practice the things we have to do well on Sundays,” is pretty indicative of his overall objective: Do what it takes to win.
The Jaguars are fairly pleased with what they’ve done in the off-season though free-agency, giving them some depth and making the team more competitive throughout the roster. If you thought your job was safe and your name isn’t Taylor or Leftwich, you thought wrong. “It might be tougher this year,” is how personnel director James Harris described the process of second day draft picks trying to make the team.
It might be tougher for and lower picks and the rookie free-agents to make the team, but the question is whether the team is overall better than last year’s 6-10 squad. You can easily say yes when it comes to Byron Leftwich and his experience. Leftwich has the benefit of playing in a bunch of games and an entire off-season to review film and get comfortable in the role of starting quarterback. Don’t forget, he missed almost all of last year’s training camp as a hold out. “I’m the leader of this team, there’s no doubt about it,” Leftwich said when asked about taking on that role. “It’s not 50-50 or split, I’m the leader and I accept that.”
I thought that was kind of strange coming from a second year quarterback, but when you look around the roster, there really isn’t anybody else. “I guess I’m the last of the originals,” Jimmy Smith laughed when asked if it was strange that Mark Brunell wasn’t around. Smith looks smaller, and admits to being about ten pounds under his playing weight. “I’m about 197 and I’d like to play at 205, but I’ll probably go right past that,” Jimmy said when his weight was brought up.
Even though there were rumors that the Jaguars were trying to move “J-Smooth” on draft day, isn’t it funny that we haven’t heard a peep from Smith even though the team took a wide receiver in the first round. Smith is pretty comfortable in his spot, and if he stays out of off-field trouble, will be the starting split end. Reggie Williams, the team’s first round pick, should start on the other side (now that Kevin Johnson has demanded and received a trade.) Williams looks to be as advertised. Big strong and fast and that’s just in shorts. ”He’s a physical player,” Del Rio said after Friday’s practice. “He can’t show that right now because this is mini-camp, but he’ll really be able to use his ability once we get the pads on.”
