When you think of camp this time of year, vacation comes to mind. There were no vacation type activities for the Jaguars though over the last two days on their practice fields. It was called a passing camp, but Jack Del Rio was just looking for some team connection. “We had a good couple of days, and couple of good teaching days and that’s what we were looking for,” Del Rio said after Wednesday’s practice.
A passing camp denotes a bunch of throwing the ball around, and they did that. But the linemen were on the field, going through a variety of speed and footwork drills. You can’t tell anything about a lineman until he puts the pads on anyway, so this was more of a chance for guys to just get to know each other. I heard a bunch of laughter and saw a lot of back-slapping among the linemen during their drills. They were clearly enjoying the time together. That’s interesting from a competitive standpoint, considering some of the new guys are going to push the veterans for starting jobs this year.
The “skill” position players were going through regular drills, skeleton passing with the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers. They were working on timing, getting to know the subtleties of how their team mates will react in different situations. “We’ll always concentrate on the basics, but we’re looking for defensive alignment recognition and things like that,” Del Rio said after Tuesday’s practice.
David Garrard didn’t work out with the team either day, but did make an appearance on the practice field on Wednesday. Garrard suffers from Crohn’s Disease, an inflammation of the intestine, and has decided to have surgery to try and correct it. He expects to be back with the team sometime in July.
