“Here’s our offer, Sam,” my boss said to me the other day,
“We’ll pay you between $1 and $2 million this year and if the ratings stay the same or go up, we’ll give you another $1 million, but if they go down, the salary will stay the same.”
“I don’t know,” I said slyly, “don’t you think I’m worth more than that?” “Hmmmm,” the news director pondered, “you might be right. Give us a couple weeks to think about it.”
This conversation, of course, is fantasy, but in the world of professional sports, and specifically NFL football, it happens every day. For the Jaguars, that’s how the conversation is going with Tony Brackens. Brackens was cut by the Jaguars earlier this year, giving them some salary cap room and allowing him to seek a new deal. Although a couple of teams allegedly have expressed an interest in Brackens, his best days are behind him as a player, and everybody knows it. The Jaguars know he can still make a few plays for them and are still looking for somebody, anybody to put some pressure on the quarterback from the edge. Brackens can do that, occasionally, and is worth the money they’re offering him, and no more.
Head Coach Jack Del Rio has different names for the on field “camps” he’s holding this off-season. Last week’s was known as a passing camp, this week it’s called veterans camp. And they are different. In the passing camp, Del Rio and his coaching staff were relaxed and in a teaching mode. The pace was slower, more time between plays and a lot more talking about what was going on. The veterans camp is like a real practice during training camp. Upbeat tempo with guys trying to show the coaches that they belong. Del Rio really likes what he’s seeing. “Our guys are buying into what we’re asking them to do,” the head coach said after Wednesday’s work out.” “They’ve been great and we’re getting a lot accomplished.” In the veterans camp Del Rio expects all of the players to act like veterans. Know your assignment and go hard on every play.
Kyle Brady got tangled up with Rasheen Mathais in a passing drill and hyper extended his left knee. It looked serious but Brady walked off the field after getting some attention from the training staff.
